Chapter Thirteen:Goodnight
I stared at the screen for a while after her last message, my heart still racing like everything had just happened all over again.
It didn’t feel real.
A few hours ago, she was just a stranger.
Now…
She was mine.
Or at least—
That’s what we had just agreed on.
I let out a quiet breath, running a hand through my hair.
This was crazy.
And yet… I couldn’t stop smiling.
Violet: It’s really late…
There was a small pause before her reply came in.
Ezra: Yeah… I was just thinking the same thing.
For a moment, neither of us said anything.
Like neither of us wanted to be the first to end it.
Violet: I don’t want to sleep.
I typed it before I could stop myself.
Another pause.
Ezra: Me neither.
My chest tightened slightly at that.
A soft, quiet feeling settled in.
Ezra: But we should.
I sighed, leaning back against my pillow.
She was right.
Violet: Yeah… we should.
Silence again.
But this time… it felt different.
Not empty.
Just… lingering.
Like neither of us wanted to let go of the moment.
Ezra: Goodnight, Violet.
I smiled at my screen.
She used my name.
Violet: Goodnight, Ezra.
I placed my phone on my chest, staring up at the ceiling.
Everything replayed in my head.
Her messages.
Her picture.
Her voice—well… the way I imagined it.
A small laugh escaped me.
This couldn’t be real.
And yet…
It was.
I turned slightly, pulling my blanket closer.
My phone lit up one last time.
Ezra: Don’t disappear on me tomorrow.
My heart skipped.
A soft smile formed on my lips.
Violet: I won’t.
This time, when I closed my eyes…
It wasn’t emptiness that followed.
It was her.
