THE LOVE I WAS NEVER MEANT TO FIND
CHAPTER ONE: THE MAN BEHIND THE SHADOW.
Elena Marlowe had always believed that some people were born with a heart made of glass.
Beautiful.
Fragile.
Easy to break.
She used to believe hers was one of them.
But after years of disappointment, she learned something important: glass could be repaired, but it was never the same again.
The world saw Elena as a calm and gentle woman.
The type of person who smiled even when she was tired, who listened when others needed someone, and who carried everyone's problems as if they were her own.
What they didn't see were the nights she spent staring at the ceiling, wondering why love always seemed to find a way to hurt her.
At twenty-four, Elena had stopped searching for love.
Not because she hated it.
But because she no longer trusted it.
She had watched her parents' marriage fall apart.
She had watched promises turn into lies.
She had watched people who once claimed they could not live without each other become complete strangers.
So she made herself a promise.
Never depend on someone's love.
Never give someone the power to destroy you.
And most importantly.
Never fall in love.
A promise that would soon become impossible to keep.
The first time Elena saw Damian Blackwood, she thought he looked like a man who had forgotten how to smile.
The city knew him as the youngest and most successful businessman in the country.
Damian Blackwood.
A name that appeared on magazine covers.
A name that made people whisper.
A man who had built an empire before the age of thirty.
Women admired him.
Men respected him.
Enemies feared him.
But behind the expensive suits, the confident attitude, and the cold expression was a man carrying a secret that had followed him for years.
A secret that changed everything.
The rain poured heavily the night their paths crossed.
Elena stood under the roof of an old café, holding a small paper bag containing the last gift her grandmother had given her.
It was a necklace.
Simple, but priceless.
Her grandmother had told her before she passed away:"Never allow the darkness in someone else to convince you that your own light is not enough."
Those words had stayed with her.
She touched the necklace gently.
"I'm sorry, Grandma," she whispered.
"I'm trying."
A loud crash suddenly interrupted her thoughts.
Across the street, a black car had stopped.
A man stepped out.
Even from a distance, Elena could tell he was different.
There was something powerful about him.
Not arrogance.
Not pride.
Something colder.
Something lonely.
He walked into the café without noticing her.
Elena looked away.
She had no interest in wealthy strangers.
She had enough problems of her own.
But fate had a strange sense of humour.
Because minutes later, the same man was standing beside her.
"Excuse me."
His voice was deep and calm.
Elena turned.
It was him.
The mysterious man from outside.
"Yes?"
"Is this yours?"
He held something in his hand.
Her necklace.
Her eyes widened.
"Oh my God."
She immediately reached for it.
"Where did you find it?"
"It fell near your chair."
Elena took it carefully.
"Thank you."
Their eyes met.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Damian was surprised.
Most people looked at him differently once they recognized him.
They became nervous.
They tried to impress him.
But Elena just looked grateful.
Nothing more.
"You should be more careful," he said.
Elena raised an eyebrow.
"I think I'm careful enough."
A small change appeared on Damian's face.
Almost a smile.
Almost.
"You lost something valuable."
She touched the necklace.
"It's not valuable because of the price."
"Then why?"
"Because of who gave it to me."
For the first time in a long while, Damian had no answer.
Because he understood that feeling.
Holding onto something because it was the last connection to someone you lost.
The silence between them was interrupted by Damian's phone.
He looked at the screen.
His expression immediately changed.
The warmth disappeared.
The walls returned.
"I have to go."
Elena nodded.
"Thank you again."
Damian walked away.
But before leaving, he looked back.
He didn't know why.
Maybe because something about her felt familiar.
Maybe because she reminded him of a time when he was not afraid to feel.
Or maybe because, for the first time in years, someone had looked at him and seen a person instead of a name.
The next morning, Elena arrived at her new job with one goal.
Survive the day.
She had recently accepted a position as an assistant at Blackwood holding, one of the biggest companies in the city.
It was a huge opportunity.
A fresh beginning.
She walked into the tall glass building, holding her documents tightly.
"Good morning," she greeted the receptionist.
"Good morning. You must be Elena Marlowe."
"Yes."
The receptionist checked the computer.
"Mr Blackwood is waiting for you."
Elena froze.
"Mr Blackwood?"
Before she could ask anything else, the elevator doors opened.
A familiar figure stepped out.
The same cold eyes.
The same expression.
The same man from the café.
Damian Blackwood.
Her new boss.
His eyes rested on her.
For a moment, surprise crossed his face.
Then it disappeared.
"Interesting," he said quietly.
Elena swallowed.
She suddenly had a strange feeling.
A feeling that meeting him was not an accident.
"Welcome to Blackwood Holdings, Miss Marlowe."
His voice was calm.
But something about his words felt like a warning.
And Elena had no idea that accepting this job would uncover secrets about Damian's past,
Secrets that would bring them closer.
And secrets that could destroy them both.
