A Gain and a Loss

Wife POV   My husband has been visiting that unfortunate girl in the hospital everyday for about and hour.  I can tell there is some sort of connection there that I don’t understand, but I trust my husband and know that there isn’t anything between them.   It’s almost time for me to have my little girl.  I just needed a few more items for her room to make it perfect., so I went shopping this morning.   I’m on my way back to my car, but I am feeling anxious.  Whatever is going to happen is going to be bad.    I keep glancing around as I hurry as fast as I can to my car, as I pass an alley I finally see the doom.  There is an man there with a gun, and he is sneering at me.  He steps out in my way and points the gun at me.  “Hand over all items of value on you or I will shoot.”  I frantically get all my money out and remove all my jewelry and hand it over, the feeling of dread still has not stopped.   “ Please don’t hurt me or my child!  I swear I won’t tell anyone about this or what you look like.”  As soon as I said it I knew I had said something wrong.  His face got meaner and she started to hit and kick me.  I curled up around my belly as best I could.    “You shouldn’t have said they you could ID me, now you have to go.”  He was still kicking me when I lost consciousness.   Cop POV    Time continues to go by and it is soon time for my wife to have our second baby.  She had gone shopping alone, and was attacked by a mugger.  She just handed over her money and jewelry in an effort to protect her baby and herself, but the mugger still hit her causing her to go into labor.  So now I have 2 people to visit in the hospital.  The girl I feel connected to, and my wife who is about to give birth any minute, but due to the events that led up to this point I am not allowed in with her.   I sit with the girl just talking to her and hoping that she will wake up.  I tell her all about my wife and daughter, and the baby to come.  I never once thought that my wife would not make it through the day.  I go back and forth between the girls room and the door to the room my wife is in, just waiting for news on one or the other.     Hours later the doctor, that  was with my wife, came to explain what had happened.  She had been beaten which caused her to go into labor and during the birthing process had hemorrhaged.  They tried to save her and the baby but could only save the baby.  I went and looked at my wife and my baby, then I went and poured out my heart and soul to the unconscious girl in the hopes that someone else would live that day.  Some time later I left to take care of my oldest daughter and to prepare her for her sister.
