Chapter 1: The Unwanted Proposal
Anita Thompson had constantly lived a simple lifestyle, despite the fact that she had become surrounded with the aid of luxury. Her mother, Maria, became the top maid on the Collins estate, and they lived in a small cottage on the property. Despite the surrounding grandeur, Anita knew her vicinity and in no way felt entitled to the wealth and privilege of the Collins family. Edward Collins, the head of the circle of relatives, changed into a type of man who saw capacity in Anita. He sent her to a prestigious boarding school, a gift that Maria and Anita customized with gratitude. This act of generosity made Anita stand out from most of the group of workers, leading to whispers and gossip. Diane Carter, a senior maid, became mainly resentful, believing Anita failed to deserve such a possibility. Jack Collins, Edward's son, was notorious for his desirable looks and appeal, but also for his loss of commitment. He had a lady friend, Stella, who changed into looking to make it as a model, but Jack wasn't trustworthy. Relationships, to him, had been brief and unimportant. His father's call for him to marry earlier than taking on the circle of relatives commercial enterprise infuriated him. Jack had no intention of settling down, mainly not with Anita. When Anita returned from school, she made herself more involved in the Collins family. Jack's mother, Evelyn, becomes particularly harsh towards her and Maria. Evelyn noticed them as threats, believing Edward preferred them over his own family. She made no effort to disguise her disdain, making Anita's existence increasingly more tough. One night, Edward called a meeting in the grand dwelling room. The anxiety became thick as he announced his very last wish: Jack had to marry Anita to inherit the family commercial enterprise. Jack was furious. He stood up, his face pink with anger. "You're joking, properly?" he spat. "You anticipate me marrying her?" Edward's expression became stern. "It's my very last selection, Jack. You want to relax and take responsibility." Jack stormed out, leaving Anita feeling more undesirable than ever. She had never asked for this. The weight of Edward's call for help felt crushing, and her heart ached to understand she had turned into being compelled to marry a man who despised her. In the times that were observed, the surroundings within the Collins household grew even greater opposed. Evelyn made it her undertaking to make Anita's existence depressing, throwing insults and developing not possible duties for her. Jack's coldness and Stella's disdain introduced the weight, making Anita experience being trapped in a gilded cage. Despite the overpowering odds, Anita's spirit remained unbroken. She saw solace in small acts of kindness from her mom and the few friends she had within the family. She clung to the wish that things might alternate, while she confronted the cruel fact of her scenario. As the wedding day approached, the tension within the family reached a boiling point. Jack's bitterness showed no sign of abating, and Evelyn's cruelty intensified. Despite the looming hazard of losing the entirety, Jack's coronary heart remained as cold as ever. Little did he recognize, it would take losing Anita to make him recognize the true value of what he had all alongside. On the day of the concept, Anita sat in her small room, her coronary heart heavy with anxiety. Maria, sensing her daughter's misery, tried to offer comfort. "Anita, my dear, you ought to live strong. This isn't what we wanted, but every so often existence forces us into situations beyond our manipulation." Anita nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "I know, Mama. I simply can not trust what is taking place. Jack hates me, and his mother... She despises us each." Maria hugged her tightly. "We'll get through this together, Anita. You have an energy inside you that nobody can remove." Meanwhile, within the grand Collins mansion, Jack becomes fuming. He could not agree with his father's audacity. Marry Anita? It became unthinkable. He paced his room, going for walks, his fingers through his hair in frustration. Stella, who was lounging on his mattress, regarded it with a pout. "Jack, darling, you can not be critical about this. You can't truly marry that maid's daughter," Stella stated, her voice dripping with condescension. Jack glared at her. "Do you think I have a desire? My father is forcing this on me. If I do not marry her, I will lose the whole thing." Stella's eyes narrowed. "Then combat him. Don't let him control you." Jack sighed, collapsing onto the mattress beside her. "It's not that simple now, Stella. My father is cussed. If I don't go through with this, he'll cut me off completely." Stella huffed, crossing her arms. "Well, you had better find a way to make these paintings without genuinely having to be with her. She's under us, Jack. Don't neglect that." As the times, the arrangements for the marriage continued. Anita tried to keep a low profile, keeping off Evelyn's wrath and Jack's icy glares. She spent the maximum of her time with her mom, finding comfort in their shared business enterprise. One evening, as Anita changed into feet on the lawn, she bumped into Jack. He leaned against a tree, searching deep in notion. She hesitated, uncertain if she should approach him, but decided to be brave. "Jack," she said softly. He regarded it, his expression hardening. "What do you need, Anita?" She swallowed nervously. "I simply... I wanted to say that I failed to ask for this either. I don't want to marry you any more than you need to marry me. But we don't have a choice." Jack's eyes flashed with anger. "You suppose I don't know that? My father is using you to control me." Anita took a deep breath. "I realize. But perhaps we are able to find a way to make these paintings. We don't need to like each other, but we are able to try to make the best of a terrible situation." Jack laughed bitterly. "Make it pleasant? You have no concept what you're moving into, Anita. This is not some fairytale where the whole thing works out ultimately." Anita's heart sank. She had been hoping for at least a small sign of cooperation from Jack, but it became clear that he changed into not inclined to meet her midway. She turned away, tears stinging her eyes, and walked back to the house. The day of the wedding arrived, and the Collins estate became abuzz with hobbies. Guests from everywhere in the USA have been invited, and the complete household becomes in a frenzy getting ready for the event. Anita stood in her room, wearing a simple white gown, feeling like an impostor in a world of opulence. Maria entered the room, her eyes packed with tears. "You look beautiful, Anita. Remember, regardless of what happens today, you are my daughter, and I am pleased with you." Anita hugged her mom tightly. "Thank you, Mama. I don't know what I could do without you." As the ceremony started, Anita walked down the aisle, feeling the burden of the world on her shoulders. Jack stood at the altar, his expression a mixture of anger and resignation. The officiant commenced to talk, but Anita should barely pay attention to the phrases. Her thoughts turned into a whirlwind of feelings, and he or she felt like she was strolling through a dream. When it became time to change vows, Jack's voice became bloodless and distant. "I, Jack Collins, take you, Anita Thompson, to be my wife. For better or worse, in sickness and fitness, till demise is a component." Anita's voice trembled as she repeated her vows, feeling the truth of her state of affairs settle over her like a heavy blanket. "I, Anita Thompson, take you, Jack Collins, to be my husband. For better or worse, in illness and health, till demise is a component." As the ceremony concluded, Jack and Anita were declared husband and wife. Jack's kiss turned into short and perfunctory, a stark comparison to the passionate embraces of the beyond. The reception becomes a blur of compelled smiles and well-mannered communication, with Anita feeling like an outsider at her personal wedding ceremony. That nighttime, Anita lay within the guest room that had been rapidly converted into a bridal suite, staring at the ceiling. Jack had insisted on separate rooms, and she or he became grateful for the reprieve. She couldn't believe sharing a mattress with a person who loathed her. In the times that accompanied her, Anita attempted to navigate her new lifestyle as Mrs. Collins. She endured helping her mom with the family chores, seeking to hold some semblance of normalcy. Jack remained remote, spending the maximum of his time far away from the residence, immersed in his work or out with buddies. Evelyn's cruelty confirmed no signal of abating. She took every possibility to belittle Anita, making her experience like an unwelcome intruder. "You might also have married my son, but you may never be part of this own family," Evelyn sneered one morning as Anita began placing the table for breakfast. Anita bit her lip, combating back tears. "I'm simply looking to do my high-quality, Mrs. Collins." "Your best will in no way be suitable," Evelyn snapped. "You are not anything but a commonplace maid, and you are also." Anita's spirit wavered, but she refused to let Evelyn ruin her. She found solace in the small acts of kindness from the other body of workers, who sympathized along with her plight. She also began to look at a special side of Jack, glimpses of vulnerability that he attempted to hide. One evening, as Anita turned into cleaning the library, she determined Jack was sitting on her own, looking at a circle of relatives' portraits. He regarded it whilst he heard her enter and quickly wiped his eyes. Anita hesitated, then took a leap forward. "Jack, are you OK?" she asked softly. He sighed and looked away. "I'm the best. Just wondering." Anita nodded and commenced to dirt the cabinets. After a few moments of silence, Jack spoke once more. "You recognize, I by no means desired any of this.
