Chapter1
olet's Pov
“I'll pay you whatever amount you need to act in a play with me.” I said, leaning over the counter to stare at the eyes of the man in front of me. His eyes were bright, filled with a glint that I could only describe as charming.
This man in front of me was an escort from the club I was in currently, but compared to other escorts, he was truly handsome.
Auburn hair, hazel coloured eyes and a high nose bridge. His face was an epitome of attractiveness, it felt like I could go on staring at him forever.
“Act in a play?” He asked, his deep voice rumbling through my spine.
I gulped, scared for some reason, but I continued speaking. “You're just an escort in this club, if you help me, I'll pay you whatever amount you want. At least, it'll be enough for you to leave this place and find a decent job. What I want is simple, you're going to go with me to crash a wedding. And after the wedding, we'll go our separate ways. Deal?” I finished, clenching my fists.
I waited for his answer as the music in the club got louder. After what seemed to be ages, the man finally smiled and nodded.
“Alright.” He stood up from where he was seated and walked towards me, the dimple on his cheek showing when he smiled. “I'll do what you want me to, however…” He leaned down, pushing a few strands of my hair backwards, revealing my face.
“What if I want something more? Other than money, will you give it to me?” His voice was deep and so attractive. I was a sucker for men like him, tall, tatted up, with muscular arms. Men who'd be able to carry me with one arm without struggling so much.
I was a chubby girl, the one who out of a friend group was the ugliest as well. At least that's what people said. As for my facial appearance, I knew how beautiful I was but because of my body, I grew to become very insecure. Things were changing now, or at least I thought it was.
Until I got sent an invitation to my boss’s wedding, or rather, my boyfriend's wedding. Yeah, my boss was my boyfriend and we've been dating for years; secretly. I was his secretary, and he was the CEO of the company. We had met in the university and we fell in love, unbeknownst to me, that he was involved with an intern.
“Something more? Like what?” I leaned in closer despite myself. He smelled so good that I couldn't help it.
“Hm… I'd have to think about it.” He smirked again, and I have to say, I really do love his face. He's the perfect guy to crash a wedding with and I was willing to spend any amount to hire him, even if it meant wrecking my savings.
“So… Do you agree? Will you help me?” I asked hopefully.
“Of course. After all, I can't deny a customer who's willing to help me live a better life.” He said, looking very amused.
“Good!” I squealed, standing up excitedly, “The wedding is in a day, you have to meet me at this location so we can enter the wedding hall together.” I placed a card with my phone number and the address on the table. “I'll send you your clothes and the money tomorrow. Don't be late!”
“I won't.” He nodded, his face serious.
“Um… By the way, can you give me your number so I can call you? It's just to call you, I don't mean anything else!” I added in hurriedly, hoping he doesn't misunderstand.
“Of course 014…”
I left the bar a few minutes later, satisfied with my choice. However, the moment I reached outside, it felt like the weight that was taken away from my chest came back.
To be honest, I felt like crying, like hitting or breaking something. My boyfriend of seven years was actually getting married to someone he only knew for three months. I should have seen it coming, I really should have.
My phone suddenly started ringing, pulling me out of my thoughts. It was him, my boyfriend, my soon to be ex boyfriend.
I put on a smile even if he wasn't here and beamed, “Baby!”
“My love.” Justin's voice came from the other end of the phone. “I already booked a reservation for you to try on your wedding dress. Where are you so I can come pick you up?”
“Oh.” I said dryly, “But it's late. Can't we do it tomorrow?”
“Are you not excited? Our wedding is in less than 24hours, you've always wanted a big wedding so why do you sound like this? Did someone hurt you? Where are you?!” He sounded worried about me and I almost laughed.
What a fake concern. If I hadn't found out that he was marrying another woman, I would have thought that he still loved me.
“No, it's fine. I'm just a bit tired from work. Send me the address so I can come find you.”
“Okay. Are you sure you're okay?”
“Yeah. I'll be right there.”
Justin sent the address immediately and I bailed a taxi to get to the mall. I walked in, and the first person my eyes caught was him; Justin. My first love, my first everything. He was someone I would never dream of cheating on, but he did it to me. And besides him was her, Diana.
The prettier, taller and slimmer girl, she was a woman that everyone loved. Down to earth, bubbly and with a disposition that just made everyone unconsciously warm up to her. I loved her too, until I found out what a conniving snake she was.
“Violet, you're here!” She rushed towards me, linking her arms with mine, “We've been waiting for you for a while.”
“I had something to do.” I replied quietly, staring at Justin with an odd look.
“Go on then, try on your wedding dress. Diana already picked a few dresses out for you.”
“You let Diana pick out dresses for me?” I asked incredulously, “it's my wedding. What right does she have to pick out a dress for me? Besides, it's the last fitting for a wedding that's in two days.”
Justin blinked, a flash of irritation crossing his handsome face, clearly surprised by my sudden outburst. For seven years, I had been the compliant, doting girlfriend who never questioned him, the perfect secret partner who stayed in the shadows while he built his life with my help. This version of me was entirely unfamiliar to him.
“It's just a wedding dress, Violet. Why are you so cranky about it?” Justin sighed, running a hand through his hair. He looked at me as if I were a child throwing a tantrum over nothing.
“Diana was just trying to be helpful. She has a great eye for fashion, and since you’re always so busy at the office, I thought you’d appreciate the help. If you don't want it then you don't have to take it, just wear your former dress then. Diana and I will wait outside for you.”
Diana immediately put on her signature down-to-earth persona, stepping forward with her hands clasped together, her eyes wide and swimming with fake innocence. “Oh, Violet, I’m so sorry! I really didn’t mean to overstep. I just know how stressful wedding planning can be, especially... well, with everything on your plate. I just wanted to save you some time. Please don't be mad at Justin.”
I stared at her, my blood boiling beneath my skin. “It’s fine,” I muttered. I couldn’t let them know that I knew. Not yet. “I’m just tired from work. I'll try them on too.”
“That’s my girl,” Justin said, “Take your time. We’ll be right outside.”
I took the bags from the waiting sales associate, my fingers clenching the fabric so tightly my knuckles turned white. The associate led me to the back of the boutique, opening the door to a massive fitting room.
I unzipped the first bag and pulled out the dress Diana had so lovingly selected for me. It was a monstrosity. The fabric was cheap, dyed a strange, off-white that made my skin look entirely washed out. The silhouette was completely disastrous for my body type—it was a tightly binding, drop-waist ballgown with massive, puffy sleeves that looked like they belonged in a bad 1980s costume drama.
It was intentionally designed to make a plus-size woman look as large, awkward, and ridiculous as humanly possible.
“What a joke.” I pushed the clothes away and stared at the one I chose myself. It was beautiful, but I wasn't going to wear it for him anymore.
“Excuse me,” I called out to an employee who passed by.
“Yes, ma'am? How can I help you?”
“Where did the man and woman I came in with go?” I asked.
The employee pointed toward a set of glass double doors near the back of the boutique, “They stepped out into the private VIP viewing courtyard, ma'am. The gentleman said they needed some privacy to discuss some event details. If you need me to call them back in…”
“No, that’s fine. Thank you,” I interrupted quietly.
I turned away from her and walked towards where she pointed. From the gaps, I could see that they were seated facing each other and I could hear their voices clearly.
“We just have to make sure the plan works perfectly on Saturday, Justin. Everything is already set up. But I'm scared, what if she finds out?”
Find out what? The wedding?
“Come on, Diana. Violet is stupid, she won't find out about it so quickly. After the wedding is over…”
“That’s not what I'm talking about. I mean what if she finds out that we're trying to make her marry someone else? What are we going to do?!”
What?! They're trying to make me marry someone else?!
