43 The advent of Harkell’s family was not untrammelled joy. They were town bred people, unused to outdoor living and overnight they had lost their homes, their livelihood and the way of life they had followed for generations. None of them was well travelled, so their knowledge and experience of different customs, attitudes and loyalties was very limited.
