My uneasiness from the mysterious message persisted throughout the next morning. I was staring at my phone, with the words "You deserve to know the truth about Daniel" seeming to mock me. Tomorrow at noon, come see me. Arrive by yourself.
I was fascinated as well as afraid about what the sender could have revealed about the guy I was claiming to be dating because they knew more about him than I did. There was a part of me that wanted to push it away like everything was OK and Daniel had nothing to conceal. I knew, however, that I couldn't. Not when the truth can throw everything into disarray.
"Rachel, are you alright?" I was brought back to the current moment by Daniel's voice, which burst through my thoughts. With a cup of coffee in his hand, he stood at my kitchen doorway, observing me warily.
Sure, I lied and forced a grin. "Just reflecting on everything,"
With his eyes probing my face for answers I wasn't ready to offer, he came over and gave me the coffee. "That night was so stressful. People are easily swayed by Lily's charm. Keep your thoughts clear of her manipulation.
Though my mind was already far away, consumed by the news I had just heard, I said, "I won't." "What are you up to these days?"
"This morning I have a few meetings, but by the afternoon, I'll be free. Perhaps we could take some action? Take our minds off of this absurdity.
I drank my coffee and nodded, saying, "That sounds nice." However, I remained uneasy. "It seems like you don't have any skeletons in your closet."
Daniel laughed, but there was a trace of anxiety in his voice. "Rachel, everyone is a skeleton. Nothing that will impact us, however.
Although his remarks were intended to soothe me, they instead served to increase my resolve to uncover his hidden agenda. I played along, nodding as if nothing were amiss, but my decision was already made. I had a meeting to attend.
I paced my apartment after Daniel departed, waiting for midday while the minutes seemed excruciatingly slow. My thoughts were buzzing with possibilities, each one more disconcerting than the previous one. The communication had come from whom? Was Lily the one? Another former associate of Daniel's? And what truth was it they believed I should know?
When the time finally reached eleven thirty, I realized I had to give up. With a thumping heart from excitement and fear, I took off my coat and went out the door. The location was a little park on the outskirts of town, peaceful and isolated, ideal for a discussion that no one was meant to overhear.
My phone started buzzing as I got closer to the park. From the same unidentified phone again, this message: "I'm by the fountain." Please don't hold me up.
With heightened anxiety, I accelerated my speed. I looked around the fountain as I got there, wondering whether somebody was waiting for me. Initially, the park seemed deserted, but then I saw her: Lily, perched on a seat with a sly grin on her face.
"Lily" I questioned, a tone of scepticism in my voice. "You transmitted those messages?"
She nodded and had a serene face as if everything was orchestrated perfectly. "Yes, I did." I anticipated your arrival.”
My emotions soured. This was the moment I had been anxious about, and here I was, completely unready. Why? What's going on here?
Lily patted the area on the bench next to her and motioned for me to have a seat. "Rachel, last night I told you. You should be aware of the information Daniel is withholding from you before you go too far.
Even I could hear the skepticism in my voice as I fired back, "I'm not in too deep." "We are merely—"
She stopped, arching her eyebrow, "Pretending?" Yes, I am conscious of it. Yet, it doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware of the kind of guy you're engaging with.
Why are you concerned? I squinted at her as I asked. You're his former partner. You should be pleased that we're acting, don't you?
She let out a sigh, seemingly sad that I didn't get it. "Rachel, happiness isn't the point. It is to ensure that you do not become like me. It's Daniel's way of adding to the complexity. He has an excellent ability to persuade others to believe what he wants them to."
Her remarks struck a chord with me, reiterating the worries that had been bothering me since yesterday night. "Whatever he did to you?"
With a moment of hesitation, Lily looked down, perhaps considering the extent of what she should reveal to me. "I believed I knew him for most of the year we spent together. Daniel, nevertheless, is not who he seems to be. He may seem confident, charming, and accomplished, but behind it all, he is a manipulator. Rachel, he lies. It's too late once you discover the reality.
My spine tingled with cold. What is the truth?
Her eyes glowed with something almost like sympathy as she turned to face me. "He doesn't always do business with integrity. He's been a part of things that might destroy not just him but also others who are close to him. He pulled me into one of his plans, and when it didn't work out, he abandoned me to pick up the pieces.
My brain was spinning. I had not expected to get more than this. Are you implying that he poses a risk?
"Not physically," she said with haste. But there are repercussions for his choices and falsehoods. Because I trusted him, I almost lost everything.
I took a deep breath and tried to take in what she was saying. "Why should I trust you? How can I be certain that you're not only attempting to harm us out of jealousy?
Lily's voice became quieter and her countenance softened. "You don't have to believe me when I say this. I am only cautioning you. Take caution while doing whatever you believe you're doing with Daniel. You're having fun with flames.
The uncertainty had already begun to grow, even though I wanted to protest and protect Daniel. Could it be that the guy I was claiming to be in a relationship with had this major secret from me? What implications did it have for us, assuming he was?
I eventually managed to get up from the bench and say, "I'll think about what you've said." However, I need more than just your word. Please provide evidence if you want me to trust you.
With a sly smirk, Lily gave a nod. "I am capable of doing that." See you at the same location and time tomorrow. I'll deliver what you need to see.
Before she could say anything further, I turned and left without answering. Confusion, uncertainty, and panic whirled through my mind. How could I have gotten into this? Was there a means of escape?
I felt the shadows around me as I lay in bed that night. Lily's comments kept coming back to me, more disturbing than the previous one, and I couldn't stop thinking about them. My phone rang with a fresh message just as I was about to go off to sleep
. It came from Daniel this time: "We should speak. I'm going to visit.
