Daniel's note—"We need to talk"—hung out on my screen like a horrible omen. I'm heading over.
A thousand possible outcomes ran through my head, making my pulse beat. Was he reading my mind? Was he aware of my encounter with Lily? Or, even worse, had she told him everything before? I felt caught between two contradictory realities, and the stress was intolerable.
I couldn't think about it for very long, however. I heard the same knock on my door after a few minutes. I inhaled deeply and opened it to see Daniel standing there with a non-readable look.
Before I could reply, he muttered, "Hey," quietly moving inside. "The air needs to be cleared."
"What about?" My voice sounded more controlled than I felt, I asked. Trying to control my nervousness, I shut the door behind him.
Daniel gave me a look that was a mixture of worry and another emotion I couldn't quite name. Regarding us. Regarding all things.”
I realized I could no longer dodge the topic as I felt its weight bearing down on me. I gestured for him to sit down and replied, "Okay." "Talk to each other."
While he sat on the couch's edge and ran his fingers through his hair, he searched for the perfect words. "I've been thinking a lot, Rachel, and I realized that this arrangement between us is more complicated than we initially anticipated."
Though my heart skipped a beat, I made myself remain composed. What are you trying to say?
With his eyes fixed on me, he said, "I mean, we're getting deeper into this than we planned." "At first, it was merely a commercial arrangement meant to address our respective issues. However, as of late... I have no idea. We get the impression of being among the fire.
His remarks mirrored Lily's, and I couldn't help but wonder whether he was beginning to understand the same things Lily had forewarned me about. Please speak up if you have something to tell me, Daniel. We have to be sincere with one another.
He averted his gaze, his mouth tensing up as if he were having internal strife. "I've kept some aspects of my history from you because I didn't believe they were important. With everything going on, however, I'm beginning to believe that maybe they do.
My spine tingled with chill. It was like this. I had been waiting for this time. "Daniel, please let me know if there is anything you are hiding."
He let out a sigh, reclined on the sofa, and massaged his temples as if attempting to prevent a headache. "I was engaged in a few commercial transactions that were not exactly smooth sailing before we embarked on this whole endeavor. I've tried to put the last several years behind me to break away from the choices I regret making.
"Is Lily involved in this in any way?" Before I could stop myself, I asked, the words pouring out.
Daniel looked at me with suspicion lighting up his features. "Why are you asking that?"
Though I was certain that lying would be pointless, I hesitated. I felt her reach out to me. You were concealing something, she added, and I should exercise caution.
Daniel's countenance became serious, and I briefly believed he may blow out. However, he only sighed after that, as if the battle had left him. Rachel, Lilily has plans of her own. She would say anything to put a barrier between us because she is resentful of how our relationship ended.
"Is that all that's here?" I squeezed. "Just resentment?"
He paused, and that pause revealed more to me than words could. At last, he said, "It's more complicated than that." "I took part in several dangerous transactions while we were dating. That realm included Lily as well. I attempted to protect her when things went wrong, but things didn't work out that way.
What took place? My question came out no more than a whisper.
Daniel wiped his face, seeming more open and vulnerable than I had ever seen. "We entered too deeply. Lily accuses me of causing harm to some individuals. I ultimately made everything worse even though I believed I could protect her.
I took a deep breath and tried to take in what he was saying. "And at this point?"
His voice firm, "Now, I'm trying to leave that life behind." To create something genuine and truthful, I've been making every effort to put everything behind me. But it's not a simple task. You always seem to run into the past."
His remarks carried a lot of weight, and I realized that this was the turning point I had been afraid to go. I had to determine whether I could put my faith in him or if the danger was too big.
I shook my head and said, "Daniel, I need to know that I'm not simply stepping into a mess. You must be someone I can trust.
I briefly glimpsed the unadulterated honesty in his eyes as we made eye contact. "I'm aware of my errors, Rachel. I'm working to put things right, however. I promise to shield you from anything that comes our way if you can put your confidence in me.
I wanted to believe him. But despite Lily's cautions and the revelations Daniel had recently revealed, the questions persisted. After all, could I truly trust him?
My phone buzzed on the table before I could reply, shattering the uncomfortable tension. My heart sank as I quickly looked at the screen. This was Lily's second communication to you: “Did he tell you the complete truth? I'll show you the evidence when we meet tomorrow.”
My mind whirled with possibilities as I gazed at the message. With his look inscrutable, Daniel was observing me, and I realized that my next move may have a profound impact on everything. Should I go see Lily and find out everything, or should I put my c

confidence in Daniel despite his previous transgressions?
