A misfortunate day
My best friend died today. I apologize for being so crude but I have no better way of putting it. This was completely out of nowhere Im not quite sure where to start, we have been best friends since grade 8 sharing every class all through high school and then both studying at rhode island university where we lived in an apartment together for 3 years. You don’t just do that with anyone and she definitely wasn’t just anyone. This morning started off like most of our mornings together, we woke up at 8:30 I made breakfast while she showered, and then I showered after she always took longer to get ready so by the time I finished she was also ready. We at our scrambled eggs on toast with bacon and tomato. While eating we went over our daily schedule, as well as laughed at some videos we had found on our feed the night before. She was leaving today to go home as our December holidays had just started, her mom had organized a dinner party for her tonight to welcome her home after the semester. I haven’t even told my parents our semester is finished because it always seems to be so busy when I go home visiting friends and family I don’t really get any time to myself, so I had decided to stay in Rhode Island until I got bored and needed to see my best friend again. We had decided to clean the house before she left and then go get some ice cream from our favorite little shop right around the corner from us. I started in the kitchen sweeping the floor and packing the ingredients away while she cleaned the dishes, she then went to pack her bags and clean her room while I did the rest of our living area. When she had finished I’m her room I had finished everywhere except my room and our shared bathroom. She went to clean the bathroom while I did my bedroom. We always worked harmoniously well together. By the time we had both finished it was about 11:30, just enough time to go get ice cream. We walked as usual but it was looking a little gloomy so I took an umbrella just in case, I always did as our weather was unpredictable. We ordered our usual, she got caramel and I got strawberry. Walking on the way back there were a few drizzles of rain but not enough to warrant an umbrella. When we got back upstairs to the apartment it was 11:55. Perfect timing for her to get her things downstairs and in her car to leave. I said goodbye to her and told her to message me as soon as she got back. She agreed and went out the door with her bags. I watched from our window her getting into her car and driving off. I waved to her before she was completely out of view.  My day carried on as normal, I read my book for a little while and then met up with some friends before they also left. I had arrived back in the apartment about and hour later when I get a phone call, “Hello?” I asked “Hello Angelica, I am sorry to inform you but your friend Marcey has been in a terrible car accident, she was badly hurt and unfortunately did not make it. You were the last person she phoned and so when we unlocked her phone we wanted to call you as well as her parents.”  I couldn’t believe it. I was shocked. Is this actually happening? Maybe it’s a joke. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t talk. I just did know what to do.  “Angelica?” The voice asked After a few seconds I registered the voice and sat down on my couch. My legs felt like jelly and I couldn’t bear the weight. “Yes, I uhm, well what happened?” I asked surprising myself how solid the words came out my mouth. “There was a freak storm and lightening had struck an enormous tree which unfortunately had landed on her car and instantly crushed it. There were some cars behind her that stopped to help but it took them about an hour to get it off the car and by that time it was too late. I am sorry this is a really horrible situation and I send my condolences to you and her family.” I can’t even be mad, it’s not like it was a drunk driver or a squirrel that ran across the road, it was a tree. An inanimate object with no thought process fell down on the one person I had shared everything with, she was the only person I trusted with my life, I didn’t even love my parents the way I loved her. She was my friend soulmate. I can’t even imagine how I would survive without her beautiful presence in my life, today was the last day I would ever see the most amazing person in my life again. “Where is she now?” I asked after a while “Her body has been taken to the morgue in Guildford where her parents while identify her body and take her to a funeral home where her body while we prepared to be casketed as they want her to be buried with her grandparents. I do not know much more than that but I hope you can get back to Guildford to attend her funeral. I hope this time passes easily, I am deeply sorry about your loss.” The voice was remorseful but I didn’t care much about what he was saying I just needed to know the facts, it wasn’t like I could blame him for her death.  “Thank you.”
