Chapter 1:The Anomally
The cursor blinked on Erick Wanyama's screen like it was daring him to look away. It was past midnight in the small internet café he rented space from in Eldoret, the hum of the standing fan the only company besides the glow of three secondhand monitors. Erick wasn't supposed to be here this late. He wasn't even supposed to have access to what he was looking at. Three weeks ago, he'd landed a short-term contract testing a mobile banking app for bugs — nothing glamorous, just poking at buttons and reporting crashes for a small fee. But tonight, while tracing a strange lag in the transaction logs, he found something that made his stomach drop. A pattern. Small, almost invisible. Transactions of exactly 47 shillings, moving out of thousands of dormant accounts, every night, at 2:14 a.m. Too small to trigger fraud alerts. Too consistent to be random. He sat back, rubbing his eyes. This isn't a bug. This is by design. Erick pulled up the source IP addresses tied to the transfers. Most were masked, bounced through proxy servers scattered across three continents — but one slipped through, just for a fraction of a second, before the trail went cold. An internal company IP. From SafiPesa itself. Kenya's largest mobile money platform. The one that half the country used every single day, including his own mother. His phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number. "Stop looking. Last warning." Erick's fingers froze over the keyboard. He glanced at the café door — locked, empty street outside, nothing but the orange glow of a streetlamp. He told himself it was nothing. A prank. Someone messing with him. Then his monitor flickered. For half a second, the screen glitched — his own cursor moving on its own, opening a folder he didn't recognize: /backup/2019_audit_deleted/. Then it vanished, and the screen returned to normal, as if nothing had happened. His heart hammered. Someone was in his system. Right now. He yanked the ethernet cable from the wall, killing the connection cold. Silence, except his own breathing and the fan's tired whir. For a long moment, Erick just sat there, staring at the black screen, his reflection ghostly in the glass. He thought about his mother, about the 47 shillings that had probably slipped out of her account too, unnoticed, over and over, night after night, adding up to something bigger than either of them could imagine. He thought about walking away. Deleting everything. Pretending he'd never seen it. Instead, he reached for a blank flash drive, and began copying every file he could before whoever — or whatever — was watching came back. Outside, a car he hadn't noticed before pulled up across the street, its headlights off, engine idling in the dark. End of Chapter 1
