CHAPTER 3_LINES THAT SHOULDN'T CROSS
The rest of the day didn't feel normal for Jayla Robinson, not because anything dramatic happened again, but because nothing had ever felt like that moment in the hallway with Julian Julius. Even when she tried to focus on lessons, her mind kept drifting back to his voice saying her name like it meant something. Jayla didn't like that's feeling, feelings were unpredictable and unpredictable things usually lead to pain. Beside her,Mia was unusually excited during break time, I'm telling you, Mia said, leaning forward on the cafeteria table, the way he looked at you wasn't normal, Jayla stirred her drink slowly and said he looked at everyone. Mia rolled her eyes and said no he didn't,Ethan was basically invisible to him compared to you, that doesn't mean anything. Mia smirked and said it means everything in school is language. Jayla didn't respond, she wasn't interested in “school language“. People always created meanings out of nothing just to feel important but still, her grip on the cup tightened slightly.
Across the cafeteria, Julian Julius sat with Ethan at a table that naturally cleared space around them,Not because they asked for it but because people instinctively gave it. Julian wasn't eating much, just sitting quietly his attention not fully on Ethan's conversation, Ethan noticed and said you're not listening, leaning back in his chair. I am, Julian said flatly,no you're not. Julian finally looked at him,say what you want. Ethan followed his gaze subtly toward the other side of the cafeteria. Jayla. Ethan smiled slowly,Ah.so it's that.
Julian expression didn't change, it's nothing he said, sure, Ethan said, clearly not believing him. Because you always randomly ask“ what's your name ”to people for no reason. Julian didn't respond but his silence was enough. Ethan leaned forward slightly, You should be careful, people notice things like that. I don't care, Julian said, that was a lie, even he knew it. Later that afternoon, Jayla was sent to the library to return some books for a class assignment, she preferred it there, quiet, organized and predictable with no noise,no people forcing conversations, just shelves and silence.
She walked between the aisles, stacking books carefully in her arms, until she reached the return desk. After placing them down, she returned to leave and stopped.
Julian Julius was standing near the entrance of the library alone,no Ethan,no crowd, just him. Jayla frowned slightly,Do you follow people around now?, Julian looked at her calmly and said I didn't know you would be here, that sounds suspicious,it isn't. A pause stretched between them, the library was quiet enough that even small movements felt loud. Jayla crossed her arms slightly, why are you here, Julian glanced briefly at the shelves,I needed a quiet place, there are other quiet places. I chose this one, that answer didn't help. Jayla studied him for a moment and said you're strange. Julian didn't react,so are you, that caught her off guard, she blinked once. I didn't say anything strange.
You don't talk much,he said simply. but when you do, you watch people like you're trying to understand them instead of reacting to them. Jayla's expression tightened slightly,no one usually noticed that Or at least no one said it out loud,I don't do that, she replied, Julian tilted his head slightly,You do. Another pause, the air between them felt different now-not loud, not tense, but aware. like both of them had stepped too close to something neither fully understood, Jayla broke eye contact first. whatever, I'm leaving, she turned but Julian spoke again, Jayla. she stopped, hearing her name from him again did something strange to her thoughts, she didn't turn around immediately,What?. There was a brief silence, then Julian said, Don't let people decide who you are here. Jayla finally looked back at him that wasn't what she expected, his expression didn't show emotion, but his words felt deliberate, like they carried weight he didn't usually share.
I don't care what people think, she said. Julian held her gaze,Good. Another pause, then he stepped aside slightly, giving her space to leave but as Jayla walked past him, she felt it again, that same awareness. That same pull of something unfinished and behind her, Julian stood still longer than necessary, staring at the space she had just occupied,as if something about her was already refusing to leave his mind. And he didn't understand why,not yet, but he would.
