CHAPTER 4_RUMOURS AND SHADOWS
By the next morning something had already changed in the school, not officially, not openly but in the way people looked at Jayla Robinson, whispers followed her through the hallway like invisible footsteps. She noticed it immediately, even if she pretended not to. Mia noticed too. they're talking about you, Mia said as they walked toward their classroom,I know, Jayla replied calmly, Mia frowned. you're too relaxed about it, there's nothing I can do about people talking, that's not the point, Mia said, they weren't talking about you yesterday, now suddenly you're the main topic in school. Jayla didn't respond but her expression tightened slightly, that was what bothered her. sudden attention was never random, something caused it and she already had a guess.
Across the courtyard, Ethan Park was enjoying himself far too much,so let me get this straight, Ethan said, leaning against a pillar near Julian, you talk to her twice and by morning the whole school thinks there's a connection. Julian didn't look impressed and said that's their problem. Ethan smirked, it becomes your problem when rumours start the attaching your name to hers. Julian finally looked at him, what rumour?
A few students nearby were clearly trying not to stare while pretending to walk past casually,on the screen was a blurry image, Julian standing in the library and Jayla was nearby. close enough to look intentional, Ethan tilted the phone slightly. someone's saying you two were alone together after class yesterday. Julian's expression stayed controlled, but something subtle shifted in his eyes. that's not what happened,he said. I know, Ethan replied, but the school doesn't. Julian looked away, not because he was guilty, because he didn't care about rumours but he did care about one thing. Control.
And right now, things were slipping out of it, Jayla felt it the moment she entered the classroom, the change in energy, eyes following her, whispers stopping too quickly when she turned her head. Mia slid into her seat beside her, okay this is getting worse. what is?. Mia leaned closer, people think you and Julian are involved somehow, Jayla blinked once, that's ridiculous,I agree, Mia said quickly. but they don't, Jayla looked forward silently,so that was it, rumours. she didn't need confirmation to know where it came from. Julian Julius or rather, the situation around him. and somehow, she had been dragged into it.
Later that day, during lunch break, Jayla didn't go to the cafeteria, she went to the back of the school building instead-a quieter place where fewer people gathered, she needed space, silence and distance. But she wasn't alone for long, footsteps approached, slow, confident, she didn't need to turn around to know who it was. Julian stopped a few steps behind her. You're avoiding the cafeteria,he said. Jayla sighed, are you following me now? I'm not following you. That's starting to sound like a lie, she said. A pause.
Then Julian stepped slightly to her side, not too close, but enough to be within her space. I heard about the rumours,he said. Jayla crossed her arms,of course you did, they're not true,I know, Another pause.
The wind moved slightly through the trees, breaking the silence between them, Jayla glanced at him,so why are you here? Julian hesitated for the first time, that was new. I wanted to make sure you weren't being affected by it,he said finally. Jayla raised an eyebrow, why would you care?, Julian didn't answer immediately, because the truth was simple but complicated,he didn't know.
He just knew he didn't like the idea of her being dragged into something she didn't ask for. and that irritated him more than it should have. I just don't like unnecessary noise,he said instead, Jayla studied him for a moment. you're lying.
Julian's eyes flickered to hers, not angry, not defensive, just aware, I'm not,he said quietly, Jayla didn't push further but something about this moment felt different again, not loud, not emotional, just real. like a line had been drawn between them, even if neither of them knew what it meant yet. before she could say anything else, footsteps approached from behind, Ethan, wow! Ethan said slightly, didn't expect to find you two together again, Jayla turned slightly, Julian didn't.
Ethan's eyes moved between them, the rumours are getting worse, you know. Julian finally spoke, ignore them, Ethan smiled, that's easy for you to say, but his eyes stayed on Jayla longer than necessary, like he was watching something unfold that neither of them understood yet and somewhere between silence and suspicion, something had already, started growing.
