CHAPTER 7- CONTROL BREAKS
Julian Julius didn't like noise but lately, everything around him had become noise. The hallway incident replayed in his mind more than once that day -not because it mattered, but because it shouldn't have mattered at all. Yet it did and that was the problem.
He stood alone on the rooftop during lunch break, away from everyone. the wind was stronger up here, colder too, but it helped him think clearly. Or at least it was supposed to. Ethan had tried to follow him earlier, but Julian dismissed him with a single look. Ethan understood boundaries when Julian made them obvious. still, even in silence, Julian wasn't at peace. Eliana Kingsley's words kept echoing,“ so it's true then ..... You're not denying her.” Julian's jaw tightened slightly, there was nothing to deny, there was nothing happening,so why did it feel like something was already happening anyway? He exhaled slowly, looking out over the school grounds and then his thoughts shifted without permission, Jayla Robinson,he hadn't planned to notice her, that was the truth, Julian didn't notice people. he categorised them, ignored them, or remove them from relevance. But Jayla didn't fit into any of those categories, she didn't react the way people expected, she didn't chase attention, she didn't fear silence, she just existed- like she wasn't trying to impress the world or survive it. that alone should have made her invisible to him but it didn't, instead,it stayed like an unresolved thought. Julian frowned slightly, this was unnecessary, he didn't do distractions.
Not after everything, not after his mother, this memory came without warning, a hospital room, his father's voice too calm, too controlled, too quick to move on after her death, the truth he discovered later, the truth that changed how he saw everything, his father had hidden things, not just grief, not just pain but truth.
And that betrayal had shaped everything he became, Julian's fingers tightened slightly at his side. Trust was not something he gave anymore, not to family, not to friends, not to anyone, so why was Jayla becoming an exception he didn't ask for? A sound behind him broke the silence, footsteps, he didn't turn immediately, I knew I will find you here, Ethan's voice said. Julian finally looked over his shoulder, I said I wanted to be alone.
I know , Ethan replied casually, stepping closer, but things are getting worse downstairs. Julian turned fully now, Explain. Ethan leaned against the rooftop rail, Eliana isn't backing off, Julian's expression hardened slightly. And?.
And she's not just talking anymore, Ethan continued, she's pushing the rumour harder,Now it's turning into something bigger - people are saying you chose Jayla over her, Julian didn't react immediately but something in his eyes shifted, that was wrong, not because it was false but because it was spreading out of control.
Ethan watched him carefully,You care more than you should. Not because Ethan was right, but because staying on that thought longer felt dangerous, later that day, Julian walked through the hallway alone. Students moved aside automatically when they saw him, that part hadn't changed but something else had, whispers followed him now,not admiration, not fear but curiosity.
Eliana had succeeded in one thing, changing how people looked at him, Julian stopped walking, slowly because ahead of him stood Jayla.Alone.
She looked up as soon as she noticed him, neither of them moved for a second, the hallway noise faded again -not because it disappeared, but because it stopped mattering. Jayla spoke first. You're causing problems. Julian's expression didn't change,I didn't start them, but you're at the center of them, she replied. A pause. that was true,he hated that it was true, Julian stepped slightly closer and said ignore it.
That's not how it works here, Jayla said quietly. Another pause, longer this time, Julian studied her face, she wasn't angry, she wasn't scared, she just look tired of being pulled into something she didn't choose, that part... bothered him, More than it should have. I'll handle Eliana,he said finally, Jayla raised an eyebrow slightly, why? Julian hesitated for half a second, then answered anyway.
Because she's making things worse, Jayla didn't respond immediately, but her eyes stayed on him a little longer than before, then she said softly,You don't like losing control,do you?. Julian didn't answer, because the truth was simple,he didn't just dislike it,he couldn't allow it and right now... Everything involving Jayla felt like control slipping through his fingers.
Even if he didn't understand why.
