Chapter 1: The Shadow of the Citadel
The wind howling off the jagged, slate-grey peaks of the Black Mountains did not sound like wind. It sounded like teeth scraping against bone—a low, rhythmic gnashing that vibrated through the marrow of anyone foolish enough to walk the high ridges after dark. Down in the valleys, men spoke of the mountain passes in whispers, warning their children of the things that hunted beneath the pale, corpse-like light of a winter moon. But tonight, the moon was entirely swallowed by dense, bruising storm clouds, leaving the world pitch-black and freezing. Aeryn Vance did not care about ghost stories. She had more immediate concerns, like the fact that her fingers were rapidly losing all sensation beneath her torn leather gloves as she clung to the sheer, frost-coated stone of the Obsidian Citadel’s outer tower. Below her, a three-hundred-foot drop melted away into an absolute abyss of churning, freezing fog. A single slip, a single miscalculated placement of frozen steel, and she would plummet into the jagged rocks below, becoming just another anonymous corpse rotting in the shadow of the western wastes. Above her lay the inner sanctum—and the ancient heart-stone of the wolf packs, currently locked away in a fortress that was said to be impenetrable. She was not supposed to survive this night. Every rogue from the northern scrublands to the southern border knew the terrifying legend of the Shadow Alpha. They whispered of a monster whose blood ran as cold as the citadel's dark foundations, a ruler who flayed traitors alive and wore their sins like a ceremonial cloak, ruling over his territory with an iron fist and a zero-tolerance policy for insubordination. Yet, Aeryn did not care about legends, nor did she care about the terrifying reputation of Alpha Valerius. She cared about survival, and more importantly, she cared about the pack elders currently rotting in Valerius’s dungeons, paying the price for a rebellion that had failed before it even truly began. Her older brother was among them, along with a dozen other loyal fighters who had trusted her father's vision. She was the last free blade left standing, and breaking them out was a debt she owed with her very soul. With a silent, practiced hiss of breath, she drove her heavy hunting dagger into a narrow, frost-packed crevice between two massive black stones. The steel bit deep with a dull crunch. Straining every muscle in her trembling arms, she hauled her exhausted frame upward, her boots scraping against the slick masonry until she managed to hook her knee over the narrow stone sill of a high tower balcony. For a long moment, she lay flat against the cold stone, panting quietly, letting the bitter mountain air burn her lungs. When the dizziness receded, she slipped through the arched balcony doors and stepped quietly into the shadows of the bedchamber. The air inside the room was thick and suffocatingly heavy. It smelled of melted tallow, centuries-old parchment, and something else entirely—something wild, primal, and overwhelmingly rich. Pine needles crushed underfoot, winter ozone, and dark, smoky cedar. It coiled around her senses instantly, making her wolf stir restlessly beneath her skin, clawing at her consciousness with a sudden, inexplicable panic that had nothing to do with her dangerous mission. Wrong, her instincts screamed, a shrill alarm bell ringing in the back of her mind. Get out. Run. Aeryn shoved the feeling down, ignoring the sudden sweat breaking out across the back of her neck. She drew her second blade from its thigh sheath, her eyes scanning the vast, dimly lit room. The chamber was dominated by a massive, iron-framed bed draped in heavy dark furs and towering shelves lined with ancient, leather-bound grimoires and strategy maps. The room was completely empty. Aeryn let out a slow, steadying breath, creeping toward the heavy oak door on the far side of the chamber that led deeper into the inner keep, where the treasury vaults and dungeon stairs were housed. She had nearly reached the threshold when a voice cut through the silence like a razor blade. "You smell of mountain ash and rebellion, little wolf." The sound vibrated directly through the polished obsidian floorboards—low, velvet-rough, and impossibly close. It slid over her bare skin like a physical touch, freezing her in her tracks. Aeryn spun around instantly, both blades raised, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird desperate to break free. Standing beside the towering stone hearth, half-swallowed by the dying, amber glow of dying embers, was Alpha Valerius. He was not wearing ceremonial armor, nor did he wear the heavy pelts and crowns of a traditional pack king. He stood clad in a loose, dark linen shirt left carelessly open at the throat, heavy leather trousers clinging to a lethal, powerful frame. Midnight-black hair fell in loose waves across a sharp, angular brow, and stark, intricate runic tattoos trailed down his exposed neck, glowing with a faint, smoldering ember-light beneath his sun-bronzed skin. His eyes were locked squarely on hers—not with the dull, confused shock of an invaded host, but with a terrifying, predatory hunger that made her breath catch in her throat. "You took your time getting here," Valerius said softly, his voice a deep rumble as he pushed himself away from the mantle and stepped out of the shadows. Before Aeryn could throw her right-hand dagger, the air between them suddenly snapped. It did not change gradually; it shattered like thin ice. A blinding, searing heat detonated across her chest, right over her heart, so intense and violent that she dropped to one knee with a sharp gasp. It felt as though a branding iron had been thrust directly into her soul, burning away her defenses in a single, agonizing flash. Across the room, Valerius staggered back a half-step, his broad shoulders tensing violently as his breath hitched in his throat. The glowing runes across his neck and collarbone flared into a blinding, violent crimson light, casting crimson shadows across the stone walls. His eyes darkened completely, the natural gold flecks in his irises igniting like wildfire until his entire gaze was molten gold and feral fury. Mate. The realization crashed into Aeryn's mind with the crushing force of an avalanche, instantly stealing the remaining oxygen from her lungs. Every instinct she possessed screamed that this man was her worst enemy, yet every drop of blood in her veins rushed toward him like a river finding the sea. Valerius let out a low, guttural growl that rattled the heavy windowpanes and made the stone beneath her boots tremble—not a sound of anger, but the terrifying noise of a starving beast that had just stumbled upon its long-lost prey. "Well, well," Valerius whispered, a dark, dangerous smile curving the corner of his lips as he closed the distance between them with a speed that defied human sight. "The gods sent my executioner straight into my bed."
