Chapter 1 - Girlfriend
The soft glow of the living room lamps played on the walls as Katherine anxiously paced the floor. She had been waiting for Leonard's return, the minutes ticking away, stretching into what felt like an eternity. The anticipation was laced with worry, a mix of excitement and concern as she imagined the door opening to reveal her husband.
When the door finally swung open, her heart fluttered, eager for his presence. But the relief dissolved into shock as Leonard walked in, accompanied by a woman Katherine had never seen before. Confusion and disbelief etched across her face as her husband strolled into the room with the mystery woman.
"Leonard, who is she?" Katherine's voice trembled, a desperate plea for an explanation as she took in the sight of the woman by his side. Her appearance was striking–auburn hair flowing loosely, a form-fitting dress suggesting a level of intimacy that sent a pang through Katherine's heart.
The woman, Shyla, wore a sly smile that hinted at a deeper connection with Leonard. Her hand rested casually on his arm, fingers playing a subtle dance. The room suddenly got all tense and awkward, which left Katherine feeling like an intruder in her own home.
Leonard, meeting Katherine's confused gaze, offered no reassurance. "Leonard, please. Who is she?" Katherine's words hung in the air, a plea for some semblance of understanding in the midst of the swirling chaos.
Leonard's response was silence. He looked at Katherine with a detached gaze, as if her question didn't even matter. The air seemed to thicken with each passing moment.
"Who is this woman, Leonard?" Katherine's voice wavered between confusion and concern. Her gaze shifted from Leonard to the woman at his side, who wore a confident smile that hinted at a deeper connection.
Leonard, as indifferent as ever, remained silent. His gaze seemed totally distant, acting like her question didn't mean a thing. Katherine felt her heart sink as time dragged on, and her husband failed to offer an explanation.
The woman, who didn't seem bothered by all the awkwardness, stepped forward. "Hi, Katherine. I'm Shyla, Leonard's girlfriend." The audacity of her introduction struck Katherine like a blow, and she felt the room spin.
"What is the meaning of all this, Leonard?" Katherine's voice trembled with a mix of hurt and disbelief. "What do you take me for?"
As Leonard attempted to walk away, Katherine, driven by a mix of confusion and hurt, reached for his hand. "Leonard, you can't just walk away without answering me."
Leonard's hand remained limp in hers, his gaze refusing to meet hers. The coldness of his silence cut through the room, leaving Katherine feeling isolated and vulnerable.
"You owe me an explanation, Leonard," she implored, her grip on his hand tightening. But Leonard, unmoved, continued to pull away.
Leonard's hand slipped effortlessly from Katherine's desperate grasp, leaving her standing there with a mix of frustration and disbelief etched across her face.
"It's none of your business," Leonard declared flatly, his voice devoid of any empathy. He looked at Katherine with an air of detachment, as if her feelings were inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
Katherine's eyes widened in disbelief. "None of my business? Leonard, of course, it's my business. We're married, for heaven's sake!" Her words hung in the air, a plea for acknowledgment of the vows they had taken.
Leonard, seemingly unfazed by her protest, raised an eyebrow in response, it's like he thought what she was saying was crazy. The air crackled with tension as Katherine, her emotions raw, confronted the man she had once believed would be her lifelong partner.
"Married?" Leonard scoffed, the disdain evident in his voice. "Our marriage is nothing more than a formality. You should have realized that by now."
Katherine's eyes narrowed, hurt mingling with defiance. "A formality? Leonard, we built a life together. We made vows, promises. How can you just brush it off like that?"
Leonard, unmoved by her emotional plea, met her gaze with a cold indifference. "It was just you, Katherine. I never really wanted any of it."
The words cut through the air like a sharp blade, leaving Katherine stunned. "How can you say that?" she exclaimed, her voice a mix of desperation and disbelief. "I love you, Leonard. I gave you everything."
Shyla, who had been observing the scene with a calculating gaze, stepped forward. "If that’s the case, I love Leonard too. Leonard and I have something real. More importantly, he loves me too."
Katherine only looked at Shyla with teary eyes. A silent battle raged within her. She fought hard to keep from letting the tears show how much this was hurting her. She refused to let Shyla see the depth of her pain, to give her the satisfaction of witnessing the crumbling of Katherine's world.
Shyla, with a self-assured smile, continued to stake her claim on Leonard. Her eyes met Katherine's, and she relished the anguish she saw there. It was a power play, a display of dominance in the battle for Leonard's affections.
Katherine, summoning every ounce of strength, spoke with a quivering voice. "Leonard, how can you let this happen? How can you let someone else come between us?"
Leonard's expression remained stoic, a mask that revealed nothing. "Katherine, it's time to accept the truth. Our marriage was a mistake."
The room became a battlefield of conflicting emotions. Katherine, her heart breaking, refused to accept the reality being thrust upon her. "Leonard, after everything, how can you just throw it all away? How can you forget the love we shared?"
Leonard, unyielding, replied, "There was never enough love to begin with, Katherine. This is the reality we live in."
With those cold words hanging in the air, Leonard turned away, heading towards the stairs with Shyla. Shyla, wearing a triumphant smile, waved her hand mockingly at Katherine, adding a cruel flourish to her victory. Katherine, her eyes filled with sadness and frustration, could only watch as the man she loved walked away.
As Leonard and Shyla walked away, their figures gradually disappearing from view, Shyla couldn't resist the opportunity to deliver a parting shot. A triumphant smile still adorned her face as she turned to face Katherine one last time.
"Goodbye, Katherine," Shyla said, her tone laced with a mocking sweetness that cut through the air.
