Prologue: Before the Before
Prologue: Her Second life. “Get your powders ready, you’re going to need them soon.” Ceira stopped measuring a prescription and turned to her boss and owner of Protège. “Stop staring at me, dismiss whatever you’re doing and prepare, it’s a life and death situation.” Ceira’s wolf hissed lowly at her boss and Vivíen treated it like it was just a child’s grumble, flicking the sleeves of her floor length gown as she left the counter area. Ceira ducked under the counter barricade and turned the sign from open to closed before picking up her little box, that held an assortment of dried and wet herbs that helped several werewolves in the area. It was why they allowed Vivíen to think she was Lord over them, it was the reason they allowed them in their territory. “Line your eyes nicely, Ceira. You might meet a nice boy.” Ceira’s wolf, Roe, rolled it’s eyes in its resting position, mumbling some about Vivíen’s bossiness. Ceira calmed her wolf and once she ascertained that everything she needed was in her box, she set out through the back door, she hated to throng through the hundreds of humans that walked around the front of the pavement going about their activities, to be thrown into them in a place like Houston was not her favorite activity. From the back, she took a few turns through severa alleys until she reached the backdoor of a boutique hotel. The thing with the werewolves in Houston was, they lived among the humans, and lived very law abiding, model citizens they were, going by how they were never stopped for even a speeding ticket. Ceira knocked the door that faced the outside world, blocking the werewolf part of the hotel away from prying human eyes. She knocked again and a red haired man just like hers opened the door with a frantic look on his face. “Ceira, thank the goddess, you’re here. Kalin is bleeding all over the floor of his room, his healing abilities don’t seem to work either!” Ceira frowned and worked through her mind to see why a wolf could not summon their healing abilities. She allowed herself to be led through the doors until she reached the room Kalin who was a cook for the hotel during the day and a warrior for his pack during the night. For them to summon Ceira, it meant Kalin had bled through the night till now, nearly noon. Ceira prepared herself for the onslaught of scents that would hit her once that door opened and she stepped in. Once she was in, the smell of Kalin’s blood filled the room, masking other scents and Ceira felt Roe move, unfurling from her lying stance earlier. Ceira walked further into the room, noticing that Kalin had turned a ghostly white and looked to be on the last tether of his life. “Why did no one summon me?” She asked in a hard tone, even though she masked her scent very cleverly, she was still a werewolf and she felt the pain of Kalin. She rushed to take his pulse with a steady finger on his wrist, she knew then why his blood had not stopped, he had been poisoned. “Who did you fight Kalin? Why did they line their claws with saffron?” Ceira asked and noticed that the room’s entire mood changed. The man who had brought her in, the deputy head of the line cooks at the hotel was stomped, but he gathered himself and left the room. Kalin lifted his head for the first time since she got into the room and asked her weakly, “Can you save me?” Ceira stopped looking through her box for some saffron, to counter the poison used, and looked up to see his weak brown eyes, she nodded firmly. “Don’t worry, you’ll be back to barking orders at your men soon.” She assured him and went back to her search, within a few seconds, she sent a man she decided was an omega of the pack to get her a few things, he returned with half of them and Ceira began her job, pounding Saffron until it became dust. It was an expensive spice, but the pack was wealthy. When she had helped them save a pup once a few weeks before, they paid her with diamonds. She was not careful in how she grated nutmeg and star anise into the mixture, they had enough to pay her. She glanced at Kalin who had been laid on the floor on an inflatable bed, and just as she took out a black pepper powder from her box, the room’s entire mood shifted, she looked up and knew why Vivíen had asked her to line her eyes, she suddenly felt a shiver run down her back at how the man’s blue eyes pierced into hers. “Who is this?” He asked, sending a look at the deputy head of line cooks who quickly explained that this was the healer they called once the pack’s healer could not do anything for Kalin. The man flicked a glance in her direction, Ceira knew because she had been watching him while she turned the mixture she’d put together into a paste. Roe got up and pranced around in her confines, ‘Let me at him, he is exactly my type.’ Ceira chuckled, making sure not to let it show before she asked Roe, ‘I thought no man appealed to you?’ ‘Those little boys don’t, but this man with his slightly shaved beard and chiseled face as though it was hewn by the goddess herself? I definitely want to climb him like a tree.’ When Roe said that, it took all of Ceira’s strength to ward off the arousal that came with it. She pulled Kalin’s injured leg to herself and applied the paste on it gently. She heard the wound sizzle just like it was cooking and soon the ugly scent of fermented seaweed filled the room alongside Kalin’s anguished cry of agony. Ceira lifted her eyes to see the man staring at her, she looked back down at what she was doing, trying to fight her arousal and that of Roe’s. The hot water she had requested for came, so she scooped all she had made into the paste into the cup they brought, added some coconut milk powder and stirred it together before lifting Kalin and giving it to him. He shook as he downed the cup falling asleep from the exhaustion even before he hit the inflatable mattress. “Come with me, I want to discuss his treatment and your pay.” Roe jumped in response, willing Ceira to get up and follow him, but Ceira taught her wolf a bit of patience by shutting all the containers she’d brought, cleaning the box before slinging it to her shoulder. She left the room behind him, walking to a silver elevator that he let her step into behind him. As they rode up to where Ceira had no idea because she’d never gone there, she heard him say, “Why have you been hiding?” Her heart thumped because it meant that her concealment had escaped while she fed Kalin his medicine. It made her wonder what she had done that made him realize. “You can mask your scent but I can sniff out any specie within a few seconds, so don’t even lie.” Roe raised a brow while Ceira tried to find the words to respond with. ‘I like him,’ She said to Ceira who shushed her firmly. “I…am not hiding from anything. I’m just taking care of myself.” Was all she could muster as response. He scoffed as the elevator stopped and they stepped off it, Ceira saw that the glass windows showed the city of Houston laid out before them. They had gone to the top floor of the hotel. “Colorado to Texas is a long, long way, Healer. You cannot be sniffing around my pack and hope I don’t find out.” Ceira shut her eyes, and exhaled. “I’m not running from anything, Alpha. I just needed a change of scenery.” Ceira’s response must have pleased Roe because she lay back and let Ceira handle it. He let her go through the door to what seemed like an office/appartement. The front was a luxurious office, but it must lead to an apartment, she stopped looking and took down the box from her shoulder to look at him. He stopped pouring from a jug and brought her a glass of water, when his feet reached her side, Ceira could feel even more the arousal that licked through her like a lit fire. She guzzled down the water in hopes that she would feel better in seconds, but it did not help. It worsened when she lifted her eyes and she could see the flecks of dark blue around his light blue irises, and the fullness of his lips. She had never lost herself this way, not even with the man she married in another life, she had never felt this clinging arousal that threatened to make her go crazy if she didn’t get off. He seemed to be feeling some of it because he leaned down and rubbed her back through her clothes. “Do you want to do this?” He asked Ceira, still staring piercingly at her as though he willed her to say no. Once she nodded her head, his eyes had a light that Ceira had no idea how to describe, but he pulled her closer and said, “Use your words, Healer.” “Yes,” Was all she needed to say before he swooped down to her lips and she was soon tasting the peppermint she’d smelt as he spoke, their tongues battled like swords, and the sweetness of it had Roe jumping for joy. He leaned down to her ample chest and pulled down her v-necked shirt to see her breasts better, when his lips touched them, he grazed her aroela with his front teeth. He came up for air and looked down to see her eyes, he lifted her and they went through his office to the living area behind, lit up by all the lights of Houston, he continued to undress her, kissing each place he unraveled. When he reached her slacks, he pulled them off slowly and put his forefinger to her mound where moisture had gathered. Ceira felt the urge to tell him that she had never done this before, but before she could gather the courage, Roe told her to shut up. ‘I want to see his face when he finds out’ He lapped at the nectar there, slowly and carefully until Ceira was writhing under him from the rumblings of her first ever o****m and when he raised his head, Ceira noticed that he was now rolling on a condom. He studiously watched her s*x as he lined himself at her slit, teasing her until she gasped. The first thing that Ceira noticed when he finally entered her was that she had seen him before, then she realized that the man that just entered her vaginal walls was a man her father feared, he was also the wealthiest alpha in the americas and from how Roe was prancing around in joy and something else, her mate. “Her mate! Her own mate!”
