Chapter 1: A New Beginning
Five years had elapsed since that fateful night at the Grand Sapphire Hotel. Jihyun Shin, now a single mother to her bright and inquisitive five-year-old son, Minjun, had moved on with her life. She worked tirelessly as a waitress at the VIP hotel, her days filled with the polite chatter of guests. One morning, as she tidied her living room, Minjun's voice echoed in her mind. Lately, he had been asking about his father, his curiosity piqued by the stories of other children with fathers present in their lives. Jihyun had always avoided the topic, telling him that his father had passed away. She knew it wasn't the truth, but she couldn't bring herself to reveal the real story. "Mommy, will I ever meet my daddy?" Minjun asked one day, his eyes filled with longing. Jihyun's heart ached. She yearned to give her son the answers he deserved, but fear held her back. Meanwhile, in the opulent offices of Gu Group, Jong Gu, the CEO, was being briefed by his personal assistant, Geon. "We've found her, sir," Geon said, his voice filled with excitement. "Jihyun Shin. She lives in a modest apartment in the city." Jong Gu's heart raced. He had been searching for the woman he had met that night for years, driven by an inexplicable longing. Now, she was finally within reach. "Make the arrangements," Jong Gu commanded. "I want to see her." A few days later, Jong Gu and Geon arrived at Jihyun's apartment. As they approached the building, Jong Gu felt a sense of anticipation. He had no idea what to expect, but he was determined to find answers. Soojin, Jihyun's childhood best friend, answered the door. She was taken aback by the sight of the two men, their expensive suits and polished shoes a stark contrast to the simplicity of Jihyun's home. "Can I help you?" Soojin asked, her voice laced with a hint of suspicion. "We're looking for Jihyun Shin," Jong Gu replied, his voice deep and commanding. Soojin's eyes widened. She recognized the name from a news article she had read a few years ago. Jong Gu was the CEO of Gu Group, one of the most powerful companies in the country. She knew Jihyun had a one-night stand years ago, but she had never revealed the identity of the man. Jong Gu's gaze narrowed. "I know she's here. I have information that she lives here." Soojin's heart pounded. She saw an opportunity, a chance to escape her own troubles and secure a better life for herself and her son. "I'm Jihyun," she said, her voice steady. "Is there something wrong?" Jong Gu's eyes scanned Soojin's face, searching for any familiarity. He couldn't recall seeing her before, but something about her felt... off. "Are you sure?" he asked, his voice laced with doubt. Soojin nodded confidently. "Absolutely. Do you have any proof that you're looking for me?" Jong Gu reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, golden ring. It was the same ring he had lost that night, years ago. Soojin's eyes widened in surprise. She had seen the ring before, in Jihyun's possession. But she knew she had to play along. She reached into her purse and pulled out the ring, handing it to Jong Gu. "I found it after you left," she said, her voice trembling slightly. Jong Gu examined the ring, his heart pounding. It was the same ring, without a doubt. "You are her," he said, his voice filled with relief. "I've been searching for you for years." Soojin smiled, her eyes sparkling with triumph. She had done it. She had fooled the powerful CEO of Gu Group, and now her life was about to change forever. Soojin's heart raced as she watched Jong Gu hand her a check for five million dollars. She couldn't believe her luck. This was more than she could have ever dreamed of. "Thank you," she said, her voice trembling. "Thank you for everything." Jong Gu smiled. "You've done a wonderful job raising our son. I'm grateful for your sacrifice." Soojin's eyes filled with extreme excitement. She had never felt so loved or appreciated. "My team will be here later to bring you and our son home," Jong Gu continued. "We'll make sure you have everything you need." Tae-oh watched the exchange with confusion. He didn't understand what was happening, but he could sense the excitement in his mother's voice. As Jong Gu and his assistant left the apartment, Soojin turned to Tae-oh. "We're going to a new home, Tae-oh," she said, her voice filled with hope. "A much better home." Tae-oh's eyes widened. He had never lived anywhere else but in small apartments. The thought of a new home filled him with excitement. Soojin began packing their belongings, her heart filled with a mix of joy and anticipation. She couldn't wait to leave behind her old life and start fresh. But as she packed, a nagging doubt crept into her mind. Had she made the right decision? As Jong Gu and his assistant drove away, Jihyun and Minjun were on their way home from the discount store. Along the way, Minjun accidentally dropped some of the fruits they had purchased, scattering them across the road. "Oh no, Minjun," Jihyun exclaimed, bending down to pick up the fallen oranges. Just then, Jong Gu's car slowed down, and the driver stepped out. Jong Gu followed, his eyes scanning the street. "Is everything okay?" he asked, approaching Jihyun and Minjun. Jihyun nodded. "Yes, thank you. Minjun dropped some of our fruits." Jong Gu knelt down and picked up the oranges. "Let me give these back to you," he said, handing them to Jihyun. Minjun smiled. "Thank you, sir. But my mommy said you crushed some of them." Jong Gu chuckled. "How about I give you some extra money for the ones we ruined?" Jihyun protested, but Minjun insisted. "Please, mommy. I want to buy more candy." Jong Gu handed Jihyun a small amount of money. Minjun's eyes lit up as she accepted it. As Jihyun thanked Jong Gu, she couldn't help but notice a familiar scent wafting from him. It was a scent she had smelled before, but she couldn't quite place it. "Thank you," she said, her voice barely a whisper. Jong Gu smiled. "You're welcome." Suddenly, Jihyun slipped on a patch of wet pavement. Jong Gu reached out and caught her before she could fall. As he held her steady, he noticed how soft her skin felt, a sensation he had experienced before. A wave of déjà vu washed over Jihyun. She couldn't shake the feeling that she had met this man before, but she couldn't remember where or when. Jong Gu released her, his eyes filled with a strange intensity. "Are you okay?" he asked. Jihyun nodded, her heart pounding. She tried to focus on the conversation, but her mind was racing. She needed to figure out why this man felt so familiar. As they parted ways, Jihyun couldn't shake the feeling that her life was about to change forever. Little did she know, the truth was on the brink of revelation, and her world would soon be turned upside down.
