Shadows of the Past.
Mia Harper was making breakfast for her twin kids, Ethan and Liam, when the sun sent a warm, golden glow over Willowbrook's quiet community. Freshly made bread and herbal tea permeated the small but comfortable kitchen. With her long, black hair cascading in free waves over her shoulders, Mia walked elegantly about the room. Glancing at her boys, her emerald eyes—a mirror of the surrounding forests—spoke of love and resiliency. Sitting at the table, Ethan and Liam—identical in their tousled blond hair and cheeky blue eyes—excitedly anticipated their dinner. Mia's life's light, her motivation for facing the heartache and tribulations of the previous five years, Her thoughts frequently returned to Silver Ridge Pack and the guy she had previously considered her lifetime mate—Aiden Stone. Though it had broken her, his rejection had given her the will to start again for her and her boys. "Mom, might we visit the forest today?" With wide-open eagerness, Ethan inquired. "Yeah, Mom, please. We haven't looked at the new clearing you discovered, Liam said, as fervently. Unable to fight their contagious enthusiasm, Mia grinned. "Okay, but you have to swear to keep near and pay attention to me. Ignorance of the forest may make it dangerous. The lads nodded fervently, and Mia started to feel guilty. Particularly about their background and the world outside Willowbrook, she had withheld so much from them. But today she wanted to let them taste the adventure. The noises and smells Mia heard around her were like a consoling hug as they explored the woodland. Nature had always comforted her; it was a place she could go to relax and away from her concerns. Arriving in the clearing—a secret treasure with a glistening stream and an old tree canopy— running forward, the lads laughed aloud over the forest. Mia watched them play; her heart swelled with affection and a little melancholy. She realized she couldn't keep them a secret forever. Regarding their father and the planet they came from, they were entitled to know the truth. But she was afraid of having to see Aiden once more and of uncovering old scars. Mia was abruptly pulled from her thoughts by a rustling sound behind her. She turned swiftly, her senses on full awareness. Her gaze swept the woodland, but she saw nothing odd. She smelled something familiar—one she hadn't smelled in years—just as she was ready to discount it as her imagination. Her heart pounded as she searched wildly for her boys. Ethan, Liam! Come here, immediately! She urged, attempting to maintain a calm voice. Sensing her anxiousness, the guy hurried to her side. "Mom, what's wrong?" With huge eyes full of anxiety, Liam inquired. "We have to head home," Mia replied in a forceful voice. "Now. Their minds racing with ideas, they rushed back to the village. Has someone from Silver Ridge located her? Was Aiden there? Perhaps worse—an enemy? She became terrified thinking about her history catching up with her. She had to guard her boys at any expense. Mia closed the drapes and shut the doors of their cottage back-tracking. The lads observed her perplexed and worriedly. "Mom, are we in danger??" Ethan questioned, his voice quivering. Mia bent down before them and rested a hand on each of their shoulders. "I don't know, darling. I will, however, assure you of your safety. Mia stayed awake that evening, unable to fall asleep. The smell she had come upon in the jungle dominated her thinking. She just knew one location she could obtain the answers she needed. She made a decision with a sad heart. They would walk from Willowbrook back to Silver Ridge. The trip to Silver Ridge Pack was drawn out and tense. Though Mia could sense the anxiety in their eyes, she had informed Ethan and Liam they were on an adventure. Stories and music helped her try to keep her spirits high, but her thoughts were toward what was ahead. Memories washed back as they approached the domain of the pack. The great trees, the meandering trails, and the sense of belonging she had previously experienced. But the agony of Aiden's rejection and the anxiety of what lay ahead tinged those recollections. At dusk, they reached the boundary of the pack. Two wolves in human shape watched over the massive gates that loomed ahead. Breathing deeply, Mia went over to them. "I have to see Alpha Aiden," she murmured, her voice firm despite internal strife. Glancing at each other, the guards narrowed their eyes to identify her. One of them questioned, incredulity clearly in his voice, "Mia Harper?" Exactly. Tell him it's critical, Mia answered with steady eyes. The guard nodded, then vanished into the jungle. As the minutes seemed to last a lifetime, Mia stood there with her sons hanging to her sides. At last, the guard came back, escorted by a tall, strong man, Aiden. Mia saw him and her heart missed a beat. Though he seemed older and more tough, his presence was as imposing as it always is. His eyes fixed on hers, a concoction of shock and something else she couldn't quite identify. "Mia," he replied, his voice sharp with feeling. Here, "what are you doing?" "I need your help," Mia said, her voice quivering slightly. "Our sons could be in danger." Aiden stared at Ethan and Liam and his eyes grew wild. He felt as though his awareness of their presence came at him like a tsunami. "Our sons?" he said, his voice just above a whisper. A loud howl from the trees sent chills down Mia's spine before she could reply. Tensing, the guards peered at the woods. Step forward, Aiden said, his protective instincts triggered. We have to enter the region. He now gave clear instructions. Their urgency through the gates was evident. Mia felt both optimism and anxiety as they headed into the center complex. She had no idea what awaited her even though she had taken her sons to the location she used to call home. Gathering within the Alpha's Den, the pack members were curious and suspicious. Strong and forceful, Aiden answered them. This is Mia Harper and her boys, Ethan and Liam, everyone. They are under my guard, he said, quieting the whispers. Though she stood erect, determined to defend her family, Mia felt the weight of their eyes. Aiden guided them to a separate room so they could have an uninterrupted conversation. "Mia, what is going on?" Aiden questioned, staring at hers. She inhaled deeply and started to go over everything—how she had left the pack after his rejection, how she had raised their boys in secret, and the recent attacks that had driven her back-off. Aiden listened carefully, his look a combination of remorse and will. Aiden continued, his voice firm, "We have to figure out who is behind these attacks." And I must write things with you, Mia. I am not letting you or our boys go once more, even if I have made mistakes.
