CHAPTER:9

444 Words
Lilian P.O.V. After the bad news at the hospital, Ella and I went back home. Things became even harder for us. Ella had to return to work, even though we both knew that whatever she earned wouldn't be enough to cover Dad's medical bills. We were already struggling, but we couldn't just sit and do nothing. I also started looking for a job. Eventually, I found a teaching job at a school close to our house. The pay wasn't much, but I was willing to do anything that could help us raise money for Dad's treatment. Two weeks passed. We hadn't even raised half of the amount the hospital demanded. The doctors kept calling, warning us that they couldn't keep Dad there forever. Each call made me more frightened. “Are we really going to lose Daddy?” I asked, turning to Ella. She sat beside me with tears in her eyes. “I honestly don't know, Lilian.” Before I could say anything else, there was a knock at the door. Ella and I looked at each other before walking over. When we opened it, two men dressed in black stood outside. I recognized them immediately. They were the same men who had come to our house before. “What do you want?” Ella asked nervously. “Our boss sent us,” one of them said. “He said if his payment isn't made by Saturday, we're coming back next week to collect it.” “What payment?” I asked. The man simply handed us an envelope. Without another word, both men turned around and walked away. Ella quickly opened the envelope. The moment we saw what was inside, my eyes widened in shock. We were both shocked when we saw the amount written on the paper from the unknown company. “Five million dollars!” I exclaimed. “Oh my God, who is going to pay such an amount?” I couldn't believe it. We had been running around trying to raise two million dollars, and now another five million had appeared. I looked at Ella. Her hands were shaking. “What have daddy gotten us into?” she whispered, dropping the envelope on the table. I picked it up and stared at the name of the boss, but neither of us recognized it. I sat down and prayed, hoping for a miracle. Maybe money would somehow fall from heaven, but deep down, I knew we had to work for it. I eventually went to my room. Ella entered hers too. Exhausted, I fell onto my bed and quickly drifted off to sleep, forgetting my worries for a few hours.
