Let’s talk,” Ella said. I sat down and stared at the bags she was holding. She placed them on the table and began bringing out several takeaway packs. There was so much food inside that my eyes immediately lit up. I had been hungry for hours, so without even waiting to hear what she wanted to tell me or what good news she had brought, I quickly picked up one of the packs and started eating. Ella looked at me and laughed softly. “You’re not even going to let me talk first?” I shook my head while chewing. “I’m hungry. Let me eat first.” She smiled and sat beside me, watching as I happily eating. For a moment, I forgot about everything—the problems at home, the debts, and the worries that had been weighing heavily on my mind. Right then, the food felt like the best thing that had happened to me all day. After eating from the takeaway packs, we packed the remaining food away, joking that it would have to last us until next week, maybe even two weeks, because we had no idea what tomorrow would bring. We both burst out laughing. “So, what’s the good news?” I finally asked. Ella smiled. “Sam gave me a job. I’m going to work as a cleaner in his father's company and the pay is good.” We were so excited that we didn’t notice our father standing behind us, listening to everything. “What?” he suddenly asked. We both turned at the same time, staring at him in fear. “I told you not to get a job!” he shouted. Ella stood up. “I’d rather get a job and save for myself than keep waiting for you!” “I told you I am planning to start up a gambling company that could make us money,” Dad replied. “Where are we supposed to get the money to start it up?” Ella asked. “I took a loan.”he said with seriousness. “From who, Dad?” Ella asked. “From a private company. I’ll repay it in less than a month.” he said smiling at us. We stared at him in shock. “Dad, what have you done?” Ella whispered. To Be Continued
