“Dad, what have you done?” Ella whispered, staring at him in disbelief. “I’ve done nothing. I’m only trying to save this family,” Dad replied, as if everything was perfectly normal. I stared at him, wondering if he had lost his mind. He had borrowed money again. Ella slowly turned toward me before sitting back down on the chair. “Oh goodness,” she cried. “I just started this job, and now we’ll have to use the money to pay another debt. We should just wait for the owner to come and take one of our properties again.” “No one is taking anything from us,” Dad said confidently as he walked past us. “I’ll pay the money back in less than a month.” “Is it with gambling money?” Ella asked. “Say whatever you want. I’ve already borrowed the money.” He walked out, leaving us behind. Ella covered her face and began crying. I moved closer and comforted her. “It’s okay. I will find a job also. We’ll be fine.” She looked at me and promised, “Don’t worry about getting a job. I’ll protect you. We’ll succeed together.” My heart felt warm. I was grateful to have such a loving sister. It had been two weeks since Ella started her new job, and things were finally getting better. Her pay was good, and she received her money every weekend. We were eating better than before, and for once, the house felt peaceful. No one knows if he has paid his debt. One afternoon, I sat quietly on the couch when Dad came out of his room. “I’m going to my company,” he said. “When your sister comes back, I don’t care what you eat. I’ve left some money for her.” I stared at him, surprised by the amount of money he had left behind. Where did he suddenly get so much? Before I could ask, there was a loud knock at the door. It suddenly flew open. Two men dressed in black stood outside, both wearing dark glasses. “Who are you?” I asked nervously. To Be Continued
