CHAPTER 1:THE KISS THAT RUINED US
The house still smelled of lilies and champagne the morning after the wedding. Eleanor sat at the kitchen table in her robe, bare feet cold on the tile, staring at the half empty bottle of wine she had opened alone. Claire had looked radiant in white. Beside her stood Daniel, tall and steady in his dark suit.
Daniel, who had smiled at Eleanor across the aisle. Whose hand had rested on the small of her back when he thanked her for the toast. Whose eyes had lingered too long when she adjusted his boutonniere.
She was forty eight. He was thirty one.
Eleanor had raised Claire alone after the divorce. She had been careful, practical, never letting herself want too much. Yet here she was, the morning after giving her daughter away, unable to stop thinking about the man sleeping upstairs with her.
They had stayed the night because the honeymoon flight left late. Claire had insisted. Now Eleanor sat in the quiet kitchen feeling the heat that had been building for months settle into something she could no longer ignore.
It started with Sunday dinners. Daniel helped with groceries, fixed the faucet, listened when she talked. Claire called him perfect. Eleanor smiled and agreed while something restless moved under her ribs.
There were evenings after Claire fell asleep when Daniel stayed up talking with her. Once he brushed a crumb from the corner of her mouth. The touch had been nothing. It had also been everything.
Last night, after the reception, Claire went upstairs first. Daniel stayed to help lock up. In the dim hallway he said quietly, “Thank you for everything. For raising her. For being you.”
She looked at him too long. He looked back. Then Claire called from upstairs and the moment broke.
Now Eleanor pressed her fingers to her lips and wondered what would have happened if Claire had not called.
Footsteps sounded on the stairs. Daniel appeared wearing only dark pajama pants, hair mussed from sleep. The sight of his bare chest hit her hard. She looked away and reached for the coffee pot.
“Morning,” he said. “Claire’s still out cold. Thought I’d make breakfast.”
“I can do it.”
“You’ve done enough.” He moved past her. Their arms brushed. Heat trailed along her skin.
They worked in silence. When the food was ready they sat across from each other. Daniel ate. Eleanor pushed food around her plate.
“You’re quiet,” he said.
“Just tired.”
He set his fork down. “You looked beautiful last night.”
“Claire looked beautiful.”
“She did. So did you.” No teasing. Just a quiet statement.
Eleanor stood and gathered plates. “I should check on her.”
“She’s fine.” He rose too. “Eleanor.”
She kept her back to him. “Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Whatever this is. We can’t.”
He stepped closer. “I know. I’ve told myself that a hundred times. But last night, when you fixed my tie, I wanted to kiss you. Right there in the church.”
Eleanor closed her eyes. “You’re married to my daughter. As of twelve hours ago.”
“I know. I love her. But this started before the ring. And it’s not going away.”
She turned. His face was too close, eyes dark and hungry. He brushed a strand of hair from her cheek, fingers lingering on her jaw.
“Tell me to stop,” he murmured.
She leaned into his hand instead.
Daniel kissed her.
It was not gentle. Hungry. Desperate. Eleanor made a soft sound and he deepened it, one hand in her hair, the other pulling her against him. She felt how hard he was. Her hands pressed to his bare chest.
They broke apart breathing hard.
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
They sprang apart. By the time Claire appeared, yawning, they looked ordinary again.
Claire kissed them both. “You two are up early.”
“Just making sure you eat before the airport,” Eleanor said.
The morning passed in packing and careful avoidance. When the taxi left with Claire waving, Eleanor stood on the porch until the car disappeared. Then she went inside and locked the door.
She had kissed her daughter’s husband. And she already knew she would not stop thinking about it.
The days that followed were chaos. Claire sent honeymoon photos. Eleanor replied with short messages and tried not to notice how distracted Daniel looked in the background.
At night she lay in bed replaying the kiss. She touched herself more than once, imagining his mouth and hands. She came with his name behind her teeth and hated herself. Then did it again the next night.
Two weeks later Claire called. Their flight was delayed. Daniel would drop her at Eleanor’s to pick up some things, then go to their new apartment alone.
“Mom, can you keep him company a bit? He’s been quiet.”
“Of course.”
When the knock came, Daniel stood on the porch with shadows under his eyes. Claire was already inside gathering clothes. The three of them moved carefully through the house. Every time Eleanor and Daniel’s eyes met, something sharp passed between them.
Finally Claire hugged them and drove off. The door closed. Silence.
Daniel turned to her. “I tried on the trip. I tried to be only hers.”
“I know.”
“It didn’t work.”
He crossed the room and kissed her like a man starving. Eleanor met him with equal force. They stumbled until her back hit the wall. His thigh pressed between hers and she gasped.
His mouth trailed down her neck. “I’ve thought about this every night. About how you’d sound. How you’d feel.”
She took his hand and led him upstairs to her bedroom. She shut the door.
Daniel undressed her slowly. When her blouse opened he kissed the soft swell of her breasts, then pulled the lace down and sucked one n****e into his mouth. Eleanor’s fingers slid into his hair.
He shoved her jeans and underwear down. Cool air hit her wetness. He dropped to his knees, spread her, and licked a slow stripe up her center. Eleanor’s head fell back. He ate her like he was starving until she came hard, thighs shaking.
He stood and pushed his pants down. His c**k was thick and hard. Eleanor wrapped her fingers around it. He groaned and steered her to the bed.
He shoved her thighs wide, rubbed the head of his c**k through her folds, then pushed in with one steady thrust. The stretch burned in the best way. Eleanor cried out and wrapped her legs around him.
“You’re so tight,” he hissed. “So wet. Been thinking about this every day.”
He f****d her hard. Eleanor met every thrust, nails raking his back, begging for more. He hooked her leg over his shoulder and drove deeper until she came again with a choked scream.
He flipped her onto her stomach, yanked her hips up, and buried himself from behind. One hand fisted in her hair. The other rubbed her c**t while he f****d her until she came a third time, sobbing into the pillow.
Only then did he let go. He buried himself deep and came with a low sound, filling her. Eleanor felt every pulse and clenched around him.
They lay tangled in the sheets afterward, sweaty and quiet.
Daniel traced patterns on her hip. “What happens now?”
Eleanor stared at the ceiling. The answer should have been that this ends here.
Instead she said, “I don’t know. But I don’t want it to stop.”
“Neither do I.”
They stayed until the light faded. When Daniel finally dressed and left, Eleanor stood at the window and watched his car disappear.
Her body still hummed. Her thighs were sticky with him. Her heart felt bruised and alive.
She had crossed a line that could not be uncrossed.
