Chapter 1:Betrayal
Serena walked through the forest, the moonlight casting silver shadows across her path. She loved this time of night when the world was quiet and her thoughts could roam freely. As the Luna of the Silver Moon Pack, she carried many responsibilities, but these midnight walks were her solace.
She found herself thinking about Evan, her mate and the alpha of their pack. Their bond was strong and unbreakable because they had been together since they were teenagers. Or so she thought. He had been aloof lately, sometimes missing for hours at a time with no apparent reason. She had made an effort to ignore her concerns, convincing herself that they were simply the stress of leading the pack.
The sound of Mira's laughter interrupted her thoughts. Serena smiled. Mira was her best friend, practically a sister. They had grown up together, shared secrets, and supported each
Serena followed the sound of laughter. She heard voices as she got closer to the clearing concealed by the darkness.
"Evan, we can't keep this up. Someone will find out," Serena heard Mira say
"They won't. No one would suspect anything." Serna knew that voice well, it was that of Evan.
"What could they be doing together?" She thought.
"How about Serena? She could find out if we are not careful."
" Serena trusts me wholeheartedly. She'll never suspect a thing." Evan said.
Serena was shocked, of all the possibilities she could have thought of, she didn't imagine her mate ever cheating on her, not least with her best friend.
Serena felt like the ground had been ripped out from under her. Her best friend and her mate, the two people she trusted most, were betraying her. She suddenly felt a tightness in her chest. Should she confront them or should she just turn away and run?
“No, I can't let it go.” She said to herself before stepping forward.
"Evan? Mira?”
They turned around at the sound of Selena's voice. Shock and guilt flashed across their faces.
“Serena, it's not what it looks like," Mira stammered, taking a step back.
"Not what it looks like?" Serena's voice was filled with hurt and anger." Then what is it, Mira? Explain it to me.”
"Serena, you're overreacting. This is just a misunderstanding." Evans said as he stepped between them.
"A misunderstanding? How foolish do you think I am? I heard you!” Serena said loudly.
Evans was taken aback by Serena's reaction. He had never her this angry. She had always been so sweet and soft and hardly prone to anger.
"Serena, please. I never meant for this to happen. It just did.” Mira's eyes filled with tears.
"How long?" Serena asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Evan sighed, "A few months."
Serena suddenly felt nauseous. Her mate and her best friend had been having an affair for months right under her nose and she wasn't aware. She felt like a fool.
“Is this why you've been acting aloof and indifferent towards me? Because of her?” Serena said loudly as she pointed to Mira.
Evan kept silent. He stared at her, his expression blank and stoic.
"How could you do this to me? To our pack?”
Evan's eyes hardened. "You wouldn't understand. You've always been weak, Serena. I need someone strong by my side.”
Evan's words stung Serena. She had always known she wasn't the strongest Luna, but she had believed in the strength of their bond. Now, that bond has been shattered and she felt like she had nothing else to hold on to.
Mira reached out, her hand trembling. "Serena, I'm so sorry. I never wanted to hurt you."
Serena stepped back, her voice shaking. "Stay away from me. Both of you.”
Her heart was broken, she turned and ran. Tears clouding her vision, she hurried across the woodland. She continued till she came to the boundary of the pack's territory. Her cries resounded through the night as she fell to her knees.
For hours, Serena sat there thinking, She had to make a decision. She couldn't stay in the pack, not with the betrayal of her mate and her best friend hanging over her. But where could she go?
As dawn approached, Serena dried her eyes and got to her feet. She needed to confront them one more time. She had to show them how deeply betrayed she felt before she could leave.
Serena walked back to the pack's main house. She found Evan and Mira in the kitchen. Their expression changed as soon as they saw her approaching.
"We need to talk," Serena said in a composed voice.
Evan nodded, his expression was stoic. "Let's go to the office.”
They proceeded to Evan's office; it suddenly didn't feel like home anymore; a place that had once felt safe now felt like a jail. Taking a deep breath, Serena turned to face them.
"I can't stay here," she said, her voice firm. "Not with the two of you."
"Serena, please," Mira begged. "We can fix this. We can make it right."
"Make it right?" Serena's laugh was bitter. "How can you make this right? You've broken my trust, my heart. There's no fixing this.”
"So, what will you do? Run away? Hide?"
"I don't know," Serena admitted. "But I can't stay here. I can't keep seeing both of you every day. I can't bear it"
Evan and Mira exchanged a look, a quiet understanding between them. "We can't let you go, Serena.”
Serena frowned. "What do you mean?"
"We need to protect the pack," Evan said, his voice cold. "You know too much. We can't risk you going to another pack with our secrets. It will compromise us and as the Alpha of the pack, I can't allow it.”
Serena's heart raced. "Are you threatening me?”
Evan sighed. "I'm sorry, Serena. But we can't take that chance.”
Before Serena could respond, Mira moved. She felt a sharp pain in her neck, the sting of a needle. Her vision suddenly got blurry, her head felt light, her veins felt like they had been lit on fire, and her knees felt weak.
"Wolfsbane," she realized, her voice a whisper. "You're poisoning me. How could you?"
