CHAPTER ONE
The morning sun had barely crept through the sheer ivory curtains when Louis Monroe stirred from his sleep. The scent of cologne, leather, and rosewood, his father’s signature blend lingered in the room before the sound of crisp paper rustling stirred him fully awake. Standing at the foot of his king-sized bed, flanked by the warm smiles of his parents, Adam and Annalise Monroe, was a stack of elegantly wrapped gifts, each one curated with intention, luxury, and love. "Happy 25th, son," Adam said, his deep voice firm yet affectionate. This day was one of the few days he beamed with smiles. "You’re a quarter-century old today. Congratulations my dear son," Annalise added with a soft laugh, brushing a lock of chestnut hair from Louis’s forehead. She placed a kiss on his left cheek, her eyes gleaming with maternal pride. Louis sat up on his bed slowly, a lazy grin forming on his lips. Though he’d grown accustomed to the grandeur that came with being the son of one of the wealthiest families in California, his parents’ gestures still touched him in places money couldn’t reach. He tore into the packages, uncovering designer shoes, a limited-edition wristwatch, and a rare first-edition novel. The gifts were tokens of wealth, yes, but also of familiarity and tradition in the Monroe household. "Thank you so much, mum and dad," he said as a warm and happy smile played on his lips. Later that afternoon, the family had arranged a small surprise gathering in the east courtyard of their sprawling estate. Lanterns swayed gently above linen-covered tables, and the air was filled with the scent of vanilla cake and roses freshly clipped from Annalise’s garden. His younger sister by four years, Solange twirled around in a yellow silk sundress, teasing Louis about his grey hairs. "I have a gift for you dear brother," she said elatedly. "You never forget to get me something for my birthday," Louis said with a warm smile that revealed his cute dimples. "Of course dear brother, you mean so much to me," Solange said as she hugged Louis. She turns to a servant nearby "Priscilla, please go get the box of gift on my bed," "Yes Miss Solange," the servant exits immediately. Few minutes later, Priscilla comes with a white gift box tied in a red ribbon and hands it to Solange. "So here's my gift," Solange gives it to Louis. Louis opens the box. In the box, there was a limited–edition sneakers from Nike. "Omg sis, this sneakers are really nice," "you are welcome," Solange replied as she watched her brother check out the gift, feeking satisfied with herself. After Solange, Randy who was his younger brother by two years offered him a bottle of an expensive vintage champagne with a tight smile. "Thanks bro," Louis said returning the smile. A little tension brewing between the duo. Louis and Randy have always been at logger heads since they were younger. Also, a few other friends and well-wishers were in attendance with gifts to commemorate with Louis Monroe, the son of the great Adam Monroe. Louis's best friend, Susana, arrived just in time to lift the gathering from warm to vibrant. Tall, sharp-featured, and effortless in her confidence. she had been part of Louis’s life for as long as he could remember. She handed him a card and whispered something that made him laugh, the sound catching in Randy’s ears like static. That evening, Susana had more in store. She walked over to his room, slightly opened it and peeped in. She saw him undressing after the party was over, his back turned against her. She stared at his well toned abs, his long curly hair that falls to his back, his lion head tattoo at the center of his back, owning the space. She imagined her fingers tracing his smooth beige skin, her lips planting kisses on his neck, her hand running through his long chestnut hair. She bit her lips in lust as she imagined all the dirty things she wanted to do to him. Louis turned to see her staring at him seemingly lost. "Susana?" " Oh Louis!" Susana jerked in shock, waking from her world of imaginations. She smiled at him though embarrassed "I...I wanted to talk to you," Susana walked into the room ,almost tiptoeing. "Ok go on," he said, turning his back against her as he picked up a brown T-shirt to wear. "Um I was thinking if you'd like to go clubbing with me tonight," He turned to look at her inquisitvely. "Which club is that?" He asked. "There's this new club downtown that recently opened, it's really the best of the best," "I am already tired for the day. I just wanna rest," he said as he slumped to his bed tiredly. "Oh Louis, but I already reserved the club for us tonight. Jay Jay, Sammy, Patricia, Randy will all be at the club with many other friends, please come," Susana said in a persuasive tone as she tried pulling Louis off the bed. "Hmm okay, but it is just because of you," Louis said as he reluctantly pulled himself up from the bed. That night,Susana whisked Louis to Club Sodom, the new high-end nightclub she talked about. As they drove in with their individual cars, the walls pulsed with bass-heavy music, the lights painted the crowd in shades of purple and gold, and the drinks flowed like water. Immediately they stepped into the club, the DJ change the song to a birthday song karaoke and the voice of the crowd singing the "Happy birthday" song filled the air. Louis stood there feigning excitement. He didn't want to be there but he did it for Susana's happiness. After the song died down, The crowd chanted for a speech. Susana nudged him on. Louis hesitantly took the microphone and climbed the stage as they cheered him on. "Ok I really don't know what to say," Louis let out a chuckle and continued. "But I want to thank everyone who put efforts into this especially my best friend," he gazed at Susana and smiled and Susana grinned from ear to ear. "She has always been there in every way for me through the good, the bad and the ugly times. The love I have for her is unshakeable." He then turned to the crowd. "And to all who showed up tonight just to make my day beautiful,I love y'all!" The crowd cheered him all the more as he picked up a bottle of Hennessy and uncocked it. "Cheers to a new age!!" As he took a gulp from the drink, the crowd's roar became more deafening. After the speech, the DJ continued his playlist as the crowd drank and danced to the tunes. Louis sat down on the bright red sofa reserved specifically for him as he watched every one dance while sipping his wine. Soon, two of his friends, Jay Jay and Sammy approached him. Jay Jay had a glass of wine in his left hand. "Hey bro come join us!" Sammy shouted as his voice could hardly be heard under the heavy buzz of the music. "I just want to sit down!" Louis shouted back. "Oh don't be such a kill joy bro. This is your party," Jay Jay said as he was used his right hand to pull Louis up. "Yeah get up let dance and drink," Sammy added. Louis reluctantly got up and Jay Jay handed him the glass of wine. Louis gulped it all down and slowly moved to the beats."Yeah that's the vibe!" Jay Jay said elatedly. Meanwhile, amid the revelry, Susana found herself alone on the rooftop lounge. The night breeze teased her black hair, and she looked out at the skyline. Randy coincidentally sees her on the rooftop. "Susana!" Susana turned to him, Randy walked up to her. "Why are you up here?" "I just wanted to sit out in the breeze for a moment," her voice barely audible above the hum of the city. "But you hosted the party, plus Louis might be looking for you," Susana breathed hard. "I know but I... I don't know," Susana said trying to get her words. "What's going on with you?" Randy asked affectionately as he put his hand on Susana's. "I think I love him, Randy,” she said softly, eyes still fixed on the stars. “I don’t know when it happened, but it’s real.” Randy took his hand off in shock. His breath caught in his throat. Of all people, it had to be Louis. He masked the flicker of pain behind a crooked smile, but something inside him began to twist. He’d loved Susana in silence for years, watching her and Louis's closeness that never quite crossed the line. Now, that line had been erased. Back in the club, the alcohol had begun to sink its claws into the guests. Laughter turned louder, movement more unsteady, and words more reckless. Louis was visibly intoxicated, his steps loose as he danced with a drunk Jay Jay and Sammy. Randy, too, had passed the threshold of good judgment, his emotions stirred by the sting of Susana’s confession. He glared at Louis with resentment from where he sat. Soon he found himself walking towards him. "Hey big bro!" he said pushing Louis violently. Louis turned, looking stunned. "What's wrong with you?'" At this point, everyone had stopped to look and murmur. "I just wanted to talk to you, come-on," Randy said as he smirked. "Look here kid, stay away from me," Louis said pointing his index finger at Randy. "Who the f**k are you calling a kid huh?" Randy pushes him again with more force. The smirk was flushed off his face, his eyes glassy with fury. "You are the daddy's boy and I am the kid huh? You get everything you want without asking, Dad and Mum's love and now her," "What the heck are you yapping about?!" Louis shot back, stumbling slightly. "I don't know how you win them over when you are nothing but the scum of the earth!" That was the last straw, Louis gave him a jab to the jaw and Randy returned it to his forehead. More guests swarmed around them as the brothers erupted into a fight with fists clashing, glasses shattering, security too slow to react. Susana hearing the commotion from the rooftop quickly came down. Her scream cut through the chaos as she saw the brothers fighting. She and a few others tried to pull them apart. Breathing heavily, shirt torn and knuckles bruised, Louis finally broke away. He didn’t say a word. He simply grabbed his car keys and stormed out of the club, the humid night wrapping around him. He shouldn’t have driven. Not in that state. Not with his vision blurred by rage and liquor. But the black Chevrolet sports car roared to life, tires screeching against the pavement as he sped into the night. The city lights danced around him like ghosts, and in his intoxicated haze, he mistook a parked delivery truck ahead for a moving vehicle.By the time he realized it wasn’t, he tried to swerve but it was too late. The crash echoed through the empty street, a brutal sound of metal against metal. Within seconds, the party’s aftermath had transformed into tragedy. And in the wreckage of celebration, the night left behind a broken brotherhood, a shattered heart, and the beginning of something no one had seen coming.
