I looked one more time at him and started walking away.
Kaylee ran to keep up with me as we got to the front doors of the school. I looked back to see Brandon and Michelle making out.
I walked to my locker without a word. Kaylee broke the silence.
“If that isn’t odd at all right.”
“Right?” Was the only thing that I could say.
“Why is he doing this?” I thought.
I closed my locker and started walking to the second floor.
“Why what?”
“Huh?”
“You said why is he doing this. Doing what?” Saying it the way I did.
“I thought I didn’t say that out loud.” I got to stop thinking out loud.
“Well you did so, what he doing?”
“Starting to talk to me, running into me.” I moved around her to start walking to class.
“Oh, I don’t know.” she said as she follows.
“Thanks Kai. You should be helping me not being as confused as I am.”
“Yeah it would help huh.” She teased me.
“Big time.”
“Hey look at the time I goanna go. Love ya girl have fun in class see you next hour.”
“You too.”
I looked at my seat in calculus and wondered if I would live through class.
I sat my books down and turned my phone off. I started to work on the homework that I didn’t finish last night.
“Mr. Scott you’re later would you like to explain why that is?”
“Nope.”
I looked up to see Brandon putting his stuff down.
“Okay since Mr. Scott is here partner up. You have one minute.”
I looked around the room as everyone began to pair-up. I took a deep breath and stood up to go to the other side of the room to sit with Rene. She smiled as I sat down next to her.
“I don’t understand why Mr. Henley makes us get together just so we can take a test.”
“Me too.” We looked at each other and laughed.
“Minuets up. Is everyone sitting next to someone?”
“Yes.” The whole class said at once.
“Good now the person on the right move up one.” No one moved.
“Now! Now right, now that means you students on the right move up one seat.”
“Hey!”
I looked over to see Brandon sit down next to me.
“Hi.” I turned my head away from him.
“What’s up?”
“Umm nothing much yourself?” it was different hearing his voice up this close for the second time in two days.
“Oh you know just sitting in math class next to you.”
I didn’t say a word after that. But looked to the front of the class were Mr. Henley held a packet of test.
“Okay class today you guys will take a test and whatever your partner score is, is yours.”
A row of what’s and all mans went through the class. I eyed Brandon.
“I guess I got an A+ on this test.”
I looked over. “And I guess I get, what is it that you get on tests D-?” I know that it was a lie. He was a A B student. He had to be to keep sports.
“Well that was harsh.”
“Well I’m a harsh person.”
He put his hand on mine and I pulled away.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“This is some kind of joke?” I asked in a harsh voice.
”What do you mean?”
I looked him in the eye. And thought about telling him, that I know what he was doing is because he was being paid to talk to me. But the only thing that I said. “Never mind.” I grabbed the test from him and started working on it. I thought about doing badly on just this one test but as I became the work I could found a way to get the wrong answer. Math just came to me. So did science and history. By next year this time I hope to be studying to become an Archaeologist.
“You have ten minutes left in on the test.”
I walked to the front of the room and handed Mr. Henley my test and then walked out. The next two classes went by fast and by the time I looked at my watch it was ten tell noon and first lunch.
I was starving and couldn’t wait for lunch to come. Kaylee was at my locker by the time I got out of history.
She was texting and when she looked up she smiled.
“Taco Bell sounds good huh.”
I laughed a little. “Umm sure.” I smiled back at her.
“So we are going right?”
“Kaylee if you want then yes we are, but if this is to go on a lunch date with Cody then I’m not going to be the third wheel.”
“Oh you want be the third wheel Ari. There someone there for you.”
“Fine but I’m driving.”
She stood straight up and handed me the keys. “Thank you.”
We were in the parking lot within two minutes. Brandon’s jeep with gone and I started to think how he gets out so fast.
We drove though town to the closest Taco Bell. The town of Colorado Springs has been I’m home for more than seventeen years. I know my way around. We pulled in and got out. Inside I sat at a table and waited. Five minutes past and Brandon walked through the door. I didn’t look away from the door, thinking that Michelle was going to being coming in.
He smiles at me. “Hey you, how is school going for you?”
“Um, good I guess.”
“That’s good I think.” He laughed and then walked up to order.
“What was that all about Ari?”
“I don’t know he is being odd the last two days.”
She went to say something but didn’t as Brandon and Cody sated down next to us. No one said a word at first but soon got into talking about our senior year.
“It doesn’t sound like we should be senior I mean just yesterday it seems like we were just starting high school and now going to be starting college.”
“So what are you going to do Ari?” I looked up from my food. Brandon knows what I wanted to do ever since we were kids.
I smiled a little. “You know what I want to do it hasn’t changed.”
“So it’s to become an Archaeologist still.”
“Yes it is.” Then I added. “So do you still want to become a Doctor?”
“Yes but I thought about going too pediatric and deal with little kids.”
Cody looked at him and laughed. So did Kaylee. But I didn’t. “That’s sweet Brandon.” I said but not meaning to.
“Okay so is there something that we are missing.” Cody pointed to Brandon and I and looked at Kaylee. She didn’t say a word, she promised she never would.
“Common Kaylee what do you know.” He teased her for a minute.
She still didn’t say a word. But Brandon did.
“We were best friends; we know everything there was to know about each other”
Cody laughed even harder than before. “You’re kidding? Right?”
Now he didn’t say a word but I spoke up. “Yes we were back in seven and eighth grade. And why do you have a deal with this. Why can’t we be friends?“
He looked at me.
“ Common, man, really you were friends with her. She not popular and you are how’s that work out?”
“It’s before I tried out for the football and baseball and basketball and yeah. “
“But she not in our group she a low life.” Kaylee was the one to say something first and Brandon just looked at me.
“Don’t you ever think before you speak?”
“Yes I do and what I’m saying is what I’m thinking.”
“Kaylee may I have your keys?” I had the keys but asked before I just walked out.
“You have them.”
“Okay.” I stood up and walked out. I looked back to see Brandon standing up but not moving. Once I was inside the car and pulling out I know I didn’t want to go back to school. Tease began to come out. I only had two more classes to go but didn’t want to be seen, so I drove to the lake. Fifteen minutes later I was sitting on the small beach looking out over the water. I don’t know why I was so upset over everything I just heard. Because stuff like that never bothered me. Maybe it was the fact that all these years I thought Brandon would stand up for me if something like this was to happen. But the only thing that he did was sit there and didn’t say a word.
