Chapter One: A dream come true
Kiera’s POV
‘Life isn't really fair is it?’ I rhetorically asked myself.
My phone vibrated, extracting me from my pool of thoughts.
‘Come home immediately.’ I read aloud.
It was a text from my mother and I knew what it meant; more trouble for me. I reluctantly left the serene area.
Twenty minutes later; I arrived home and everywhere was silent.
“Where the hell have you been!” Mom yelled at me.
I inhaled deeply, ready for whatever insult she was willing to throw at me.
“I was at the park.” I answered, uninterested.
“You never listen to anyone and-”
I began to make my way to the staircase, determined to escape her rantings but I was stopped by someone.
“Welcome home sister.”
I looked up to see Kira; my twin sister dressed like the most innocent person in the world, this was strange but I scoffed and made to leave but a voice stopped me.
“Kira? Come here.” My father ordered. I didn't flinch, knowing he was referring to my sister and not me but she gave me a gentle nudge.
“What are you doing-” I began to say but Mom hurriedly scooped and dragged me to the center of the living room.
I wanted to protest but I saw from across the table a very familiar face.
“She looks beautiful and elegant. I'm so happy I get to meet her.” The woman said.
Dad cleared his throat, subtly sending a message so I shook the woman's hand. She then rose up to her feet after giving him a knowing nod.
“It'll do, will tomorrow be fine? I've had all the arrangements made and honestly, you've been preparing for this for months now.”
Dad chuckled. “Of course Mrs Macalister, you have our word, we're pleased to be a part of your family.”
Mrs Macalister laughed softly then raised my chin with her thumb. “We'll see more of each other pretty soon daughter-in-law.”
I was confused by her words but I let it slide. Dad saw her off and immediately they stepped out of the house Mom began to bark at me.
“Are you insane? What stunt did you just pull!”
“What are you talking about?” I asked her.
She huffed and puffed angrily while Kira tried to pacify her. In the heat of this, Dad walked back in, she hurriedly went over to him, shaking his arms.
“What was her response? Is it really happening?” Mom asked, agitatedly.
Dad looked irritated and he walked up to me.
Pah! A slap resonated across my face, stinging badly.
“Dad.” I muttered, tears rolling down my face.
“How dare you try to ruin everything for me!” He thundered.
I was confused and looked at Mom's face for an explanation but she looked the other way while Kira wore a devilish smirk.
“Do you know who that is? Which family she's from?” Dad barked then ran his fingers through his hair. “Listen carefully because I'll say it just this one time, that woman is your mother-in-law and you're getting married tomorrow.”
I burst into a fresh peal of laughter and they all stared at me like I was psychotic. “What do you mean I'm getting married?” I asked in-between laughs.
Dad seemed to lose his temper as he slapped me once again, forcing me to abruptly cease laughing.
“She has her suspicions but I was able to convince her that nothing has changed.” Dad turned to face Mom and told her.
I staggered backwards, the events of that morning coming back to me like a jolted memory. It began to make sense, the hushed tones while making a call, the disdainful stares glared at me, the secretive discussions between the three over the past few days, it all began to make sense.
“Who?” I asked, referring to whom I was being sold off to.
“Daniel Macalister.” Kira replied, snidely.
I gasped, not wanting to believe my ears.
“Get her ready, I don't want anything to go wrong.” Dad said dismissively.
“No!” I yelled out.
He arched his eyebrows. “No?”
“How can you do this to your own daughter? You're selling me off to that demon? Everyone in Chicago knows he's a monster, a rumored mafia Lord and a kingpin ruthless billionaire, how can you think of marrying me off to him?” I blurted, my eyes fell on Kira. “You made a pact with the family to marry off Kira years back didn't you? Why are you then making me take her place?”
It was mom's turn to slap me and my face stung but not as painful as the pain in my heart.
“How dare you suggest we marry off your sister to that beast? You know she's unwell and still recuperating and-”
I yanked her hands off me. “I am the one whose kidney was forcefully donated to her after she's ruined it by smoking heaps of c******s and hemp, I'm the one who is recuperating badly and not her! You had me donate a lung as well, I've always been the way taking her place getting in trouble, I got rusticated and you gave her my certificate as well, now you're ruining my life for her?!” I protested quite loudly.
Dad stepped in and dragged me by my hair. “Listen you insolent ungrateful little slut! You're marrying him and that's final, there's no way my daughter would do that, do you understand?” Dad hollered.
“Please Dad, don't hurt her. She's right, It's my ill-fated to be engaged to him, I'll do it.” Kira uttered, pitifully. “Kiera, you don't have to yell at them, it's my fault that I'm been loved, but I'm scared of what will be of me if I go through with this, can't you just take my place this once?” She added, fake tears dropping from her eyes and then she coughed, making her look fragile.
“See? Your sister is unwell yet she's not being selfish! You'll marry Daniel Macalister as Kira Paxton and that's final!” Mom barked.
Tears rolled freely down my cheeks. “I'm also your daughter, why ruin me for her?” I yelled then ran upstairs and locked myself up in my room, mourning my last moments of freedom.
****************
“Remember who you are; Kira Paxton, don't bring shame to the family.” Mom whispered into my ears as a limousine pulled over, the door yanked open awaiting me to get in.
“I'll miss you mother, thank you for choosing this part for me, you'll surely be rewarded for it.” I remarked loudly, reminding her of the bitterness in me.
She stepped backwards and snickered, giving me a little push.
A tear rolled down my cheeks, Kira pulled me into a hug and whispered into my ears. “Marry the beast in my stead, sister.”
I scoffed, pushed her gently away and walked into the car, shuffling the excess scaffolds of my wedding gown into the car as I sat. The escort shut the car door and I leaned back, scared of ruining my make-up while my family waved at me, afterall; I just got married in my husband's absence.
