Chapter TenThe Mountain Refuge Ruby sat cross-legged, leaning against the rock behind her. Both eyes were tightly shut and her hands rested on her knees. She wasn’t meditating. She had never had the patience for that. Barely a week in to leading her motley crew up into the mountains, she had figured out that if she appeared to be meditating, she could actually get some peace. Apparently the uninitiated thought it was a ‘cultural thing’. She groaned as a soft chime dinged, prompting her to open her eyes. She looked over the haphazard stones that rested against the logs, making up the flimsy outer wall. Two more chimes sounded, and she let out the breath she had been holding, her muscles relaxing slightly. It had taken several false alarms, and intense re-education for the watch parties
