PREMISEIvy Bennett has run Between the Lines, the last independent bookstore in the small town of Willowbrook, for six years. It's cluttered, cozy, and beloved — and barely breaking even. Then Nash Calloway, a former big-city marketing exec turned "reluctant entrepreneur," opens The Gilded Page directly across the street: sleek, minimalist, with a $6 oat-milk latte bar and a marketing budget Ivy could only dream of.War is declared over window displays, Yelp reviews, and a stolen (adorable) shop cat. Then the town's mayor announces that the annual Willowbrook Fall Book Festival — Ivy's one shot at saving her store — will only get municipal funding this year if the two shops co-host it together.Forced proximity. Banter. A slow, reluctant thaw. A meddling town full of matchmakers. One (1) very confused cat.Tone: Warm, witty, contemporary small-town romance — think You've Got Mail meets Beach Read, with a low-angst, high-banter engine.Heat level: Moderate — charged tension, a few kisses, closed-door intimacy (easy to adjust if you want more or less).

CHAPTER ONE. The rival on maple Street
THE RIVAL ON MAPLE STREET The banner went up on a Tuesday, which felt like an act of aggression in itself. Tuesdays were for restocking, not for war. Ivy Bennett stood in the doorway of Between the Lines with a box of returns balanced on her hip and watched three men in matching gray polos unfurl forty feet of vinyl across the front of the old Hendrickson building. THE GILDED PAGE, it read, in a font so clean and confident it looked personally offended by her hand-painted sign next door. Underneath, in smaller letters: Books. Coffee. Community. "Community," Ivy repeated, to no one. Marmalade, curled in the window display among a pyramid of autumn releases, opened one eye in solidarity. "They can't just say community," Ivy told the cat. "Community is earned. Community is the Tuesday knitting group and the middle school book club and letting Mrs. Alvarez pay for her grandkids' summer reading list in installments. Community is not a font choice." Marmalade closed the eye again, unmoved. The building had sat empty for eight months, ever since the hardware store folded, and Ivy had — foolishly, she now realized — assumed nothing would replace it before spring. She'd had plans for that window space. A little cross-promotion, maybe. A shared sidewalk sale. Instead, by Thursday, there was a chalkboard sign outside The Gilded Page reading: Grand Opening Friday! Free lattes, live jazz, and yes, we have the new Colson Whitehead. Ivy went inside and wrote her own chalkboard sign with slightly more force than necessary: We've had the new Colson Whitehead since Tuesday. Also, we know your names. She met him properly on Friday afternoon, forty minutes into his grand opening, when she marched across Maple Street to retrieve her cat. The Gilded Page smelled like cedar and eucalyptus, which was, Ivy thought, an aggressive choice for a bookstore. The shelves were low and white and sparse in a way that was clearly meant to look curated rather than empty. There was, in fact, live jazz. There was, in fact, a line for lattes. And there, behind the counter, steaming a pitcher of oat milk with the easy confidence of a man who had never once doubted himself in a customer service setting, was Marmalade's new best friend. He looked up. Ivy had built a small, satisfying picture of him in her head over the past three days — slick, hollow, the kind of man who used the word disrupt unironically — and she was annoyed to find the real version only about sixty percent that. He had dark hair that needed a cut, sleeves pushed up, and the specific tired-around-the-eyes look of someone who had personally carried in every one of these shelves himself. "Can I help you?" he said, in a tone that suggested he already suspected she was not here for a latte. "You have my cat." He glanced down. Marmalade was draped across the pastry case like she owned it, one paw dangerously close to a tray of scones. "I have a cat," he said. "Ownership hasn't come up. She wandered in around noon and hasn't left. I assumed she was a stray with excellent taste in real estate." "She's not a stray. She's the store cat. She has a bed. She has a job." "What's the job?" "Ambiance. And rodent deterrence, allegedly, though I've never actually seen her catch anything." "Well," he said, sliding the scone tray very deliberately out of paw's reach without breaking eye contact, "she's welcome to freelance." "She's not freelancing. She's being poached." Ivy crossed the room and scooped Marmalade up, who went instantly, traitorously limp with contentment. "You people. Six days in business and you're already headhunting my staff." Something shifted at the corner of his mouth — not quite a smile, more like the idea of one, filed away for later. "Nash Calloway," he said, and held out a hand she did not take, on principle. "And for what it's worth, I didn't headhunt anybody. She followed the smell of foam." "That tracks. She has no loyalty and terrible priorities." "Sounds like a great employee, actually." Ivy adjusted her grip on the cat, who had begun to purr audibly, which felt like a betrayal loud enough to be a legal matter. "Enjoy your grand opening, Mr. Calloway." "Nash is fine." "I know," she said. "I'm choosing not to use it." She was almost to the door when he called after her — not smug, which surprised her, just genuinely curious. "Hey — for the record. The chalkboard. We know your names. Was that a threat?" Ivy paused in the doorway, Marmalade a warm, disloyal weight against her collarbone, jazz still playing behind her like this were a movie and not the opening skirmish of a war she fully intended to win. "It was a warning," she said, and left him to figure out the difference.
