“Sam, Is that really necessary?" Riz questioned while watching me being tied up to the chair. Out of all the vacant seats, they choose the alpha’s office chair. His scent still lingers from the high-back tufted executive chair, and it infuriates me.
Not being affected is easier said than done.
“She's a prisoner, so she's being treated like one." He continues to tighten the string to keep me in place. The redness of my skin was apparent and I am glad it wasn’t worse than what their alpha did.
“Hey, hey, hey! Be careful. She's fragile, you know." Ray whined, reaching out to stop Sam from adjusting it any further.
“Don’t underestimate me. You’d be surprised." I scoffed.
A**
“You want to join her?"
“O-On second thought, I’ll follow what she said. She's good. I'm good." Instantly straightening his back, refusing the offer.
Sam stood in front of me with his arms crossed. “There is no need for me to know how you're able to escape 'cause, obviously, our security's been quite loose lately after Jace decided to move you."
I escaped a laugh, hardly believing what he said, but I had a hunch it was him.
“That monster did? You're obviously pulling my leg.” I huffed, acting in denial.
“Don’t you dare mock our alpha. I can easily end your useless life, rogue.” Sam threatened. His eyes were changing to a blue colour, an innate trait of his wolf that also marks his position as a beta.
Riz walks closer to place her hand on Sam’s shoulder. “Sam, let’s stop pressuring her. She isn’t going to tell us anything if we keep this up.” That’s when Sam closed his eyes and calmed himself down.
“The alpha’s lucky, he has got some loyal dogs to follow him around.”
He breathed hard at my remark, but he wasn’t affected that much anymore. “The only thing we want to know is where our alpha is."
My brows met, hardly understanding.“—And why do think I'd know?”
“Miss, we just really need to make sure he's safe. If you know where he’s been gone to, we’d appreciate it.”
“Just because he's a little late for curfew, doesn't mean he's been kidn*pped. And why in the world are you asking me who has no chance whatsoever to hurt him? "
“We can't mind link him, and if he was going to go somewhere we can't reach, he'd tell us beforehand. Also, if you are not involved in this, then your people are most likely responsible, those that might've escaped."
“Why blame my people? You've also made a lot of enemies. I just don't understand why you'd settle on blaming one who clearly doesn't have the power and time for vengeance? If I were them, I would plan this through." I added with conviction.
“Then you really planned it through by getting in that secret passage and exposing yourself blatantly to us, I suppose," Sam commented.
“It's my wolf—"
It's your fault
“—Anyway, even though I hate the very existence of him. I'm not stupid enough to risk both mine and June's life by keeping that man."
“June?” Riz asked; at the same time, I regretted mentioning him.
“—He is no one.”
It was too late to take it back as the man from before seemed to have grasped my words. When he was about to open his mouth, I knew what would come next.
“I heard one other person was with you the last time you were moved from the cell. They said it was a kid not older than ten years old. If I had to guess, he is either one of your pack members or your family.”
I gritted my teeth but didn’t say a word.
“It seems I was right.”
“Like I said before, I don't know anything!"
"No matter if you were involved or not. We needed you to do something for us.”
“...”
“Alpha Jace Emmet Havenspear. You need to remember his name. You need to look for him and bring him back alive and safe. If your surviving pack members are behind this, you are our best bet to negotiate. But if what you said is correct and your pack had nothing to do, I will dispatch our trusted aides to help you negotiate and escape." He looked by the door and mindlinked the guard prompting him to leave and go somewhere else.
Farah, this is great. We can now look for him and see if he's safe.
Yeah, right.
“... You know what, why don't you just slit my throat? I'd rather end up doing nothing than helping that monster live."
“You really are stubborn, aren't you? But I guess if you aren't, you'd probably be in the same place with your other pack members as well. Buried and cold."
“Fu—"
“Sam!"
“I know what I am doing, Riz!” Putting his right hand up towards her before turning his head towards the door.
“We have brought him, beta”
Following the source of the voice, I saw two guards who had appeared from the hall. They were holding June in the middle and dragging him from across the room.
"You... " The hair of my body stood up as I felt my anger arise.
He was gonna use him against me!
June freed himself from the guards the moment he saw me and clung to my side.
“Were you hurt?” I asked right away.
He lifts and shakes his head. Though he seemed calm on the outside, his eyes were not.
“Don't worry, I'm here...I won't let anything happen to you..." I assured him while he kept holding onto me tightly. I bit my lip as I tried to tone down the welling anger inside of me.
Moving my attention back to the betas, I gave them menacing looks. "How dare you... He's just a child!"
“Sam, this is not right. We don't need to do this." Even if Riz was against Sam’s decision, I would never lower my guard and trust her or anyone from this pack.
“I know what I'm doing."
He turned at Riz and lowered his voice, “Look, I have no choice. If we want Jace back, then this is the only way. We need all the betas here, including you and me since the alpha is absent."
“I agree with you, Sam, but I am with Riz on this one. We can’t just do things this way. We have many fighters that we can ask to find Jace.” Ray interrupted. “It shouldn’t be this way.”
“I still don’t trust her. If her pack was the one behind this, then the more reason we need to choose her. If not, we wouldn’t lose anything. She’s disposable to us.”
“You... " I glared. I flinched as he started to move towards us.
June moved to my back hurriedly. “Don’t you dare…” I growled.
Even though I warned him, he kept going until his hand reached out to June. I tried to move and stop him from getting June but it was no use since I was tied securely to the chair. “Stop!”
Grabbing the crying child away from me, I shouted, "Stop it! You're hurting him!"
Riz removes Sam’s hold on the child and tries to calm June from crying. Sam let her be, but he was still not changing his mind.
“We are not going to do anything to him. As long as you find and return Jace back, then this child will be safe.”
“Are you insane? Why do you think I have him? You have June here, so there is no way I'm risking both our lives by hiding that alpha."
“Don’t you dare disrespect my alpha? You are in no place to argue, Rogue. Life for a life.”
I clicked my tongue. “But if he isn’t alive then? What will you do?”
His glare was piercing, showing that he was bothered by my remarks.
“Like what I said, life for a life. You better not hurt him."
“What if I’m too late? It’s not mine or June’s fault.”
“Then you better get going.”
“You bastards, you killed most of my people and now, you won't even let us go! ” I fumed.
Without a moment of hesitation, he grabbed June again and bore his claw just enough to scrape some skin from June's neck.
“G-Get away from him! Or I swear I'll kill you!" I was trembling with rage.
"Should I add a few cuts?"
“You—!”
I realize this man is no different from him, he'll do whatever it takes to get what he wants.
Riz was going to hold him back from hurting the child again when I suddenly blurted out what Sam had been waiting to hear.
“Stop! I'll save him, alright?! Just stop!"
Sam released June from his hold, turning the quivering child towards the guards.
“You should've said it sooner."
“Why...you can just save him yourself. You're his betas, aren't you?" I muttered.
“If it was that simple, we had already gone looking for him." Jackson was resting on his side against the door's frame before he continued talking. “Just like what you said, we have many enemies. If anyone learns that Jace's missing, this land will go into turmoil. They need us, betas, to act on his stead if anything happens to him."
What are you going to do now?
What else? I don't have a choice. Either I get to bring him back or they'll kill June.
“I get it. I'll bring him back-"
“Alive," Sam emphasized.
I breathed hard, “Just release me."
“Try anything and the boy's dead.”
“I know.”
After they unloosen the rope, they allowed me to talk with June for a few minutes. Then, they gave me some brief information that would help me recover his tracks.
I don't really need it, since I know what to look for or, rather, what to smell for. This is just one of the advantages of being mates, but I would never in my life would accept him as anything. That alpha will forever be my enemy.
If there is one thing I could have asked them, then I would've wanted a map, since it’s the only thing I find helpful right now. But I'd be stupid to ask that, since lending something that valuable can become a weapon to be used when it’s in the wrong hands and as of right now, I'm probably at the top of their list.
Without a moment's delay, the betas took me to the training grounds where their alpha was last seen.
