Stone
I sit on the sofa in Silver’s office, my gaze settled on the floor before me, thoughts running a mile a minute in my head but the one that keeps repeating over and over is always the same; how the hell did I miss the signs and get it so wrong.
When the Alpha declared she was taking Jayden as her chosen mate I thought someone had slipped something into my soda, that I was going mad but no, Jayden walked up there, all smiles and I couldn’t help the hurt that coursed through me as I realized I had been played by both my brother and my mate. I tore out of the ballroom and barely made it to the outside of the building before my wolf exploded from inside me and I began to run, no destination in mind, just running as far from the pain as I could. I thought it would have been enough, to get far enough away but I was wrong, so wrong, and suddenly I felt a sharp pain, as if someone had pressed hard on an awful bruise but ten times worse, it hurt so bad my wolf halted and sank to the ground whimpering. It had only lasted about thirty seconds but it felt like hours and when my wolf could finally stand again we both knew what had happened; Rayne had taken Jayden as her mate, our bond had been cut and my wolf fought the anger and hurt to keep moving, paws hitting the ground until he was exhausted and collapsed. I had shifted and had just enough energy left in me to crawl up the steps and ring the packhouse bell, when the maid had opened and screamed out for Silver I had smiled to myself; of course, I had subconsciously run here. Silver had called my name but I couldn’t answer and I felt him hoisting me up, yelling for someone to help him and I tried as best I could to walk to relieve my weight from his frame getting as far as the sitting room on the right side of the house before collapsing and passing out, Corrine’s gasp the last thing I heard.
Since then I have spent my days with Silver, he working and me, well I spend my days tormenting myself by replaying that night over and over. “Stone?” I glance up at Silver. “Your phone hasn’t stopped vibrating on the coffee table since before, are you going to answer?”
“No.” I reply flatly and Silver sighs.
“Listen Stone,” I raise an eyebrow at him.
“Are you going to tell me you understand?” I hate how snarky I sound and Silver shakes his head. “At least.” I mumble.
“No, I was going to tell you that you need to face her head on, find out what happened and get the rejection over with so you can move on.”
That familiar hurt and anger course through me. “I DON’T WANT TO MOVE ON!” I roar as I get on my feet and tower above him. Silver is on his feet just as quickly.
“You will reign your wolf in now Stone,” He growls, his Alpha command pushes out and my wolf fights it but eventually slips back and I collapse into the chair. Silver is still for a few minutes to be sure I am back in control before he sits. “You need to control him.” I nod. “Maybe you shouldn’t go back just yet.”
I scoff. “No kidding, it’s only been what, a week?”
“Ten days.” He corrects and I raise my head to look at him surprised. He catches my expression. “You were passed out for a little while when you showed up, those are the days you lost in the count.”
I sigh. “I just don’t get it.” I mutter and see Silver’s head bob.
“I don’t either, I mean is it possible that she really couldn’t forgive you for what happened with Oaks?”
“No, we talked and she was not happy but she told me flat out that all couples fought, she wasn’t going to throw us away over a fight.” I ground my palms into my eye sockets.
“How much sleep have you been getting?” Silver asks.
I shrug. “Just enough to not be dangerous.” I reply and he sighs.
“Listen take the couch, get some rest, better to have a weird sleep schedule then no sleep at all, go.” He nods toward the sofa and I stay seated. “Stone, I said take a nap.” This has more of a command and I grunt at his tactics but I obey as I go over and lie down, my eyes closing near instantly.
“Dirty move.” I mumble Silver’s chuckle the last thing I hear.
“Stone, Stone, wake up!” The voice is frantic. I spring from the couch and look around the room crazed, noticing there are lights on and I wonder when it got so dark out. I spot Corrine and Silver looking at me, distress written on their faces.
“What’s wrong?”
“You need to answer your phone the next time it rings.” I go to argue when it begins to vibrate and I glance from it to Silver. “Answer it.” No command just the urgency has me reaching for the damn thing and I see Cade’s name on the screen, my nerves settle a little.
“Hey Cade.” I answer and I hear a sigh.
“Thank the goddess, Stone you are impossible to get a hold of.” He replies.
“Kind of the point.” I reply and another sigh drifts down the line. “Why are you calling me Cade, please tell me she isn’t with you right now.” Silence. “Good talk, call me when you aren’t so crowded.”
“Stone wait, it isn’t what you think.” I scoff
“Right.”
“You know I wouldn’t play middle man, especially not if what you think happened actually happened.” This has me interested.
“What are you talking about?”
“Put me on speaker phone.” I pull the phone away and fulfill his request. “Can you hear me?”
“Yes Cade, we are all here.” Corrine replies.
“Good, pretty sure I can only explain this once, damn nerves won’t handle more than that.” He mumbles the last part and now I am on high alert; Cade never got nervous.
“What is going on Cade?” I all but growl and I hear him inhale.
“Ok I am going to talk and you, cave man, are going to listen. Alpha?”
“Yes Cade.”
“Remember what we discussed.”
“I will but you may want to get on with it.” Silver says walking closer to me, sitting me down on the couch.
“Ok what they hell are you all playing at?” I search their faces, well those I could, seeing the stress and fear in Corrine’s eyes. She meets my gaze as a tear slips out, and now I am more than on high alert, I am in panic mode. “Cade, talk NOW!”
“Your brother planned it all Stone, right from the start, he played us all.”
