Stone
I frown. “What are you talking about?”
“Do you remember what Rayne wouldn’t tell you, the something she had over your brother that could severely hurt his status?” I nod , Cade chuckles. “Assuming you nodded I will continue; the night of the ball, after you beat it out of the hall Rayne looked like she was having a heart attack, on her knees clutching at her chest, screaming in pain.” I swallow down the mental images knowing it was my pain, my hurt coursing through her. “Alpha was going mad trying to get her help but she kept swatting his hand away, cursing at him incoherently until suddenly we all hear this sad howl and Rayne suddenly goes berserk on stage, like feral wild Stone, never saw a wolf get that crazy; she looked like she belonged in a horror movie buddy.” I grab my head between my hands as I lean on my knees. “Snarling, eyes wild and the purest shade of gold I have seen a wolf’s eyes,” my head snaps up. “She looked right at Jayden and I swear Stone he looked like he peed his pants and her voice, sounded like it wasn’t even her.” I can only imagine what that crazy aura of hers was like. “She told Jayden this was the last straw, his last interference and there before the whole pack she told us what your brother had done.” He goes quiet and my breathing begins to accelerate.
“Might not want to keep him in suspense too long Cade.” Silver chimes in from beside me, hand on my shoulder.
“Sorry just a blow.” Cade mutters and I nearly go through the phone to shake him. “The night she was attacked on Oak’s land, Jayden planned it with Oak’s son, that’s how they got you out and Jayden in, how they found her in the human village and that was how Oaks knew not to get her mad in that ring too.” I see black, a low growl rumbling through my chest as Silver holds me tight.
“Stone focus, you need to calm down Cade isn’t done,” I barely hear his words until. “I said stand down wolf!” His Alpha command slips out and my wolf unhappily bares his neck to the power in the room before slipping back inside me. Silver nods at me. “Continue Cade.”
“There’s more?” I whine.
“Sadly yes, sorry buddy.” Cade sounds as defeated as I do. “So after that bombshell the whole pack is shocked, some are confused, others angry, your mom and dad were livid.” In the midst of everything I had forgotten them and now it makes me feel guilty and sad for them. “Alpha Brookes is speechless when Rayne turns on him, telling him he interfered with her life yet again but for the last time.” I don’t like the sound of that at all. “She addresses the whole pack and tells everyone you are her mate not Jayden and that you and only you were ever going to put a mark upon her skin.” My heart beats fast in my chest as I glance at the other two wolves in the room with me.
“But she chose Jayden.” I reply nimbly.
“Uh, no, Alpha decided that.” Cade replies and I frown.
“Why, he knew very well.”
“Yeah after announcing to the whole pack you were the future Alpha mate Jayden got a little weird, tried to grab her and she literally knocked him off his feet.” I can’t help the smile on my face. “When the Alpha tried to help him up Rayne growled so loud at her father that he bared his neck to her.” My eyes go wide as Silver whistles low beside me.
“How could she do that?” Corrine asks.
“No idea but believe me we all saw it happen; when she asked her father how he could help someone so vile his response pretty much sealed your brother’s doom.” A pause and I feel as if I am reading a novel but can’t get through the pages quick enough to see what happens next. “The Alpha said he had too because she was carrying Jayden’s pup.” His voice is a near whisper as I explode off the couch
“WHAT??!!”
Silver grips my arm. “Calm.”
“Calm…you want me to be calm after hearing my mate slept with my brother?!”
Silver raises an eyebrow and I understand the fight going out of me as I sit. “Jayden lied.”
Cade snorts. “No kidding oh and it seems you confirmed it to the Alpha.”
“I did not!”
“He ever call you to ask if what Jayden said was true?” It all hits me like a two-ton truck.
“I thought he meant Jayden leaving, that sneaky little bast-“
“That’s a yes. Well you can imagine how well Rayne took it and right there in front of everyone; the pack, her parents, your parents she stripped Jayden of his right to Beta status and then she banished him from the pack.”
“Whoa.” Silver and I say in unison.
“You could say that again, I mean the feeling was so painful man, like we had had the wind knocked out of us, some of the wolves crumpled to their knees under the pain of it, Jayden taking the brunt of it naturally but when he could stand one look around the room and he knew he was done for, he bolted and quick.”
I sit back amazed. “So that pain I felt wasn’t Rayne breaking our bond?” I mumble.
“Break your bond, dude that girl put her own father into submission in front of his whole pack to preserve your bond.” Cade answers and I cannot help the grin on my face.
“Well guess you were right, should have gone home sooner and faced her head on.” I smile at Silver but neither he nor Corrine will look at me. “What?”
“Rayne was planning on going to find you but she was drained after that show of power and she passed out on stage.” I sit straight up in my seat. “She was out for a few days and you could imagine how stressed her folks were but eventually she came around.” I sigh in relief. “She told them that once she was feeling better she was setting out to find you.” I hear him murmur something, Elise’s voice in the background.
“Ok so why is everyone acting like that is a bad thing, has she disappeared or something?” I ask worried.
“No, she’s here.” Cade replies but I don’t like the tone of voice. “About two nights ago, the night before Rayne was about to leave, she got a text from an anonymous number, asking her to meet outside, she refused until she got the next text explaining that you had changed your cell number and you were outside waiting for her to come down so she could reject you and move on.”
“I never texted her.” A pit of dread settles in my gut.
“I know that, she didn’t Stone, she ran out to meet you but,” He pauses pulling the phone away from his ear and I hear him talking to Elise. “I can’t, I can’t tell him.” I hear Cade sniff, hell I think I heard him sob when Elise’s voice takes his place.
“Alpha?”
“I’m here Elise, please continue.” Silver sounds afraid and now that dread is full blown fear.
“Stone…. it was Jayden and those three monsters from Oaks pack, they were waiting for her,” My breathing accelerates. “She didn’t stand a chance against all 4 of them, especially when she ran down there thinking it was you, they jumped her and beat her badly Stone.”
A growl erupts from inside me. “I kill them all.”
“Stone.” Her voice is soft, sad and it snaps me back to the conversation. “They injected her with Wolfsbane to prevent her wolf from healing her but,” she takes a large breath, her turn to break down and cry as Cade comes back on the line.
“They also laced the injection with silver Stone,” My eyes go wide.
I ask even though I am deathly afraid I already know the answer. “What does that mean?”
Cade speaks the five words I never wanted to hear. “It means she’s dying Stone.”
