Silver.
“It means she’s dying Stone.” Cade had barely got the words out when I felt the shift in Stone begin, no command would help and I knew that, Cade had suggested a strong sedative of human drugs to keep his wolf at bay but I vetoed the idea, I knew he would need his wolf because his first thought was going to be to get to Rayne as quickly as he could and who was I to keep him sedated and rob him of any chance he had of seeing her alive.
I hurried to open the latch in my office that led to the tunnel and the courtyard outside. “Stone through here.” I yelled as he shifted, his wolf nodding at me before disappearing through the door and I watched as he burst outside, his paws pounding on the earth as he got smaller and smaller.
“Alpha?”
“On his way Cade.” I reply
“Thank you for all your help.” He replies.
I sigh. “He’s my friend too Cade.”
“Glad he has both of us to get him through this.” Cade replies and I agree.
“Is there no way she can survive?” Corrine whispers and I see the heartache as I go to her and pull her into my arms, cradling her.
“Doctors say the best thing for her right now is her mate, that their bond could help her but they aren’t hopeful she will pull through, just that it will ease her pain.” Corrine sobs and I kiss her forehead, swaying with her as she cries for her friend. “I’ll leave you both to discuss, thank you again Alpha.”
“I’d say my pleasure but,” I reply and Cade chuckles sadly.
“But..”
The call ends and I stay locked with Corrine as her tears wet my shirt, her pain flows through our bond and I wish I could draw it all out of her. I pull back and cup her face gently. “Let me go talk to Luka and we will get on our way to the Brooke’s pack.” She smiles through her tears before kissing me deeply.
“I love you.” She mumbles against my lips and I smile.
“Not as I much as I love you.” I reply and she wraps her arms around me. “Ok you go pack our stuff and I will join you by the car in half an hour?” she nods and kisses me softly on the lips before we both exit the office, she goes left as I go right and knock on my beta’s door.
“Come in.” I open the door and Luka smiles. “Alpha, to what do I owe the pleasure?” He smiles but it fades as I close the door and drop into the chair before him. “Silver what the hell is going on; is Corrine alright?”
I nod. “She is, it’s Brooke’s daughter.”
“The b***h that double crossed Stone?” He spits vehemently and my wolf pushes forward angrily.
“Best to watch how you speak about your Alpha mates’ best friend without having all the facts Beta.” His neck tilts and he bares it to my wolf.
“Apologies sir.” He chokes and I pull back my aura, going on to explain everything and Luka has the grace to drop his gaze to the desk before him. “I am truly sorry Silver, I was out of line, it is my honor to watch over the pack while you tend to the matter.”
I nod. “Thank you Luka.” He lifts his head back up at meets my gaze. “What are you thinking?” I raise an eyebrow at his question and he laughs, our ranks forgotten as we go back to being old friends. “Like I can’t read you by now Silver.”
I laugh. “True enough. I was thinking; while I am away get in touch with the other pack leaders.”
“Ok but want to explain why?”
I chew on an idea. “Let’s say precaution; if she survives I have a bad feeling Brookes is going to war against Oaks, hell his daughter might just do it in his place and will need backup, at least the packs will be ready,” I pause hating the next sentence. “And if she doesn’t survive well they will be ready to attend the funeral, one less thing for Alpha Brookes and his mate to think about.”
Luka nods. “On it, anything else?”
I am about to say no but change my mind. “Get in touch with Alpha Bates first, tell him to call me later this evening, I need to speak with him.”
“Sounds like you have a plan.” Luka laughs as I get up, he mimics my actions walking with me toward the front door.
“I have a few ideas, let’s leave it at that for now.” I explain opening the door Luka following me through as Corrine waits by our car. We get close and Luka bows his head to Corrine.
“I will be praying to the moon Goddess for her swift recovery.”
She smiles. “Thank you Luka, for everything.”
He nods. “It is an honor.”
I open the passenger door. “Come love, let’s get on our way.” She slides in and I close the door glancing at Luka who simply nods, an unspoken understanding passing between us as I climb in behind the wheel of the car and begin what might be the longest drive I have ever taken
