Chapter 1
“Elly..” My mom walked into the living room, her face looking like she’d seen a ghost.
She put the envelopes down and held one in hand. She had just gotten the letters from the mail and I had a feeling what this one was about.
“They’re going to evict us by June.” my mom said, rubbing her hands down her face tired.
“Look, it's going to be okay mama. I know I'm going to get an approval this week.” I said, giving her a hug.
I had applied for private medical jobs because they paid so well. I got waitlisted by most and rejected by the rest but hopefully I'll get one.
“Let’s go through the rest, today doesn’t have to start off badly.”
She sat beside me on the couch.
“Dept, dept, dept… no way,” we looked each other in the eye.
“What does that one say Elly?”
We have reviewed your credentials and would like you to begin work at the Hawthorn Mansion this afternoon. Please bring your certification documents and be prepared for immediate placement.
Confidentiality is required.
My face lit up while reading under my breath.
“I got it!!!”
My mom squealed and hugged me tightly. I know she had no idea what I was on about.
I gave her the envelope and let her read through. When her eyes scanned through the monthly pay, she teared up.
$8,000.
“That’s not real…” my mom said in shock and disbelief.
“It is mama.” I said excitedly.
“You have to go get your stuff packed right now.” My mom said scurrying around in excitement.
“Mama, I’ve been ready for this day.” I said with a smile on my face.
Suddenly all the tiredness left my eyes and I forgot that I had just returned early this morning from a night shift at the clinic.
There was no time to stand and stare, we quickly went into the room to get ready. Mom had a shift for 12 and I had to leave before 1pm.

The taxi drove into the estate gate leading to the Hawthorn mansion. I hadn’t heard anything about the Hawthorns so I did a little google search. All I could see were private businesses, hotels and restaurants. Then I saw a family photo.
I don’t see any kids in this photo.
I thought to myself as the taxi stopped in front of the mansion gates. After a minute, the gates opened and we drove in.
I was welcomed by a butler at the door and some ladies in uniform took my bag away. As I walked behind the butler, the house left me in awe.
It was so massive.
A lady dressed in an elegant dress and heels walked up to me, giving me a hug. “Hello, Elissa, I’m Evelyn, Caine’s mother and this is Maureen.”
Maureen was dressed in a long dress and an apron over it. “Of you need anything at all, just meet her,” Evelyn said.
“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Evelyn.” I said, smiling at her.
“Evelyn, just Evelyn is fine dear.” She said, smiling at me.
“Caine is up in his room,” she looked at me, “shall we?”
We both headed up the stairs. We got to a tall wooden double doors almost at the end of the hall.
I’m guessing this is Caine’s room.
Evelyn knocked lightly and let herself in. She came back out the door and told me to come in also.
I saw a young man in bed, his legs were hidden under the covers and his upper body resting against the headboard.
“Caine dear, this is Elissa. She is your new nurse.”
Caine gave no reaction. He didn’t open his eyes, he didn’t look at any of us.
I gave Evelyn a concerned look and she smiled at me and we left the room.
“Look, Caine is not really in his best mood right now so he won’t come down for lunch, it will be taken to him.”
“I need you to have patience with him please.” Evelyn pleaded with me.
“Okay Ma’am.” I corrected myself immediately. “Evelyn” I didn't address the fact that Caine was a grown man to Evelyn, so I reserved it for later.
“His Uncle will be here today for lunch and later in the evening, his doctor will come over for his monthly check up. You will assist the doctor if need be.”
“Okay..”
I took mental notes of this little schedule.
We went downstairs and Maureen took me to the kitchen where I’d take Caine’s food tray up to his room.
Immediately I heard a bunch of cars pull up to the driveway. Maureen and I looked at eachother.
I couldn’t read the look on her face but it didn’t look too excited.
She asked me to follow her to the dining area.
As I walked into the large dining room, I saw a man dressed in black from head to toe speaking to Evelyn.
He moved with ease. It looked practiced, maybe controlled.
Two men walked closely behind him. Identical in black suits and tinted glasses.
Lunch wasn’t ready yet but Caine’s lunch was.
Maureen went up to him and I just followed behind her.
“Goodday sir Lucien.”
Lucien nodded his head and Evelyn began to speak.
“This is the new nurse, Elissa.”
Lucien looked up at her and stretched out his hand.
“Lovely meeting you Miss Elissa. Join us for lunch?”
I couldn’t say no. It looked like if I didn’t agree, he’d chop my neck off.
“Nice to meet you too sir.” I said, shaking his hand and letting go quickly.
So this was the man whose signature was on the letter.
We had lunch but I couldn’t finish my plate so i left the table early.
I took Caine’s tray and went up the stairs. I knocked and went in, just like his mother did.
He was awake.
I took the tray and dropped it on the side table and stood back up. I didn’t know if I should say something or tap him, knowing he was awake.
“Uhmm, hi again,” I laughed awkwardly.
“I don’t think you got my name earlier, or maybe you weren’t in the mood to talk, but my name is Elissa. You can call me Elly or Lissa or even Elle. I think I’d prefer it if you called me Elle. It’s quite…”
He turned to face me and looked me in the eyes. I shut my mouth immediately.
He didn’t look so pleased to know my name.
“I brought your lunch and your doctor will be here in a few hours.”
Caine didn’t look like he was new to this. His mother told me that he was already drained by the constant switch of nurses. She said that he hated being in this situation. He wasn’t shy, he was indifferent. He didn’t care anymore.
I looked at him, my gaze not leaving his eyes. I was waiting for him to say something, anything at all.
Nothing, silence filled the whole room. I decided to break the silence. I couldn't do without saying something for so long. Besides, I have to bond and be at least friends with him, given that we’d be seeing each other every day for a while.
“You don’t talk much, do you?” I said to him.
No response.
