Chapter 1 A Billion Dollars
"Gavin, you're amazing. I love it! Ah... so good..." On the oversized white bed, Gavin Parker had his hands locked around a woman's slender waist, thrusting into her from behind. The sound of their bodies colliding echoed through the room like thunderclaps, each one slamming into Ellie Nelson' consciousness as she stood frozen in the doorway. She had known Gavin was cheating on her—it wasn't exactly a secret. Knowing was one thing, but seeing it was something else entirely. Before she could process the betrayal laid bare before her, Gavin turned and saw her standing there. She had thought catching him in the act might shake him, shame him even. However, she was wrong. Gavin grabbed a bathrobe with unnerving composure and wrapped it around his toned frame, his voice low and irritated. "When did you get back? Why didn't you tell me beforehand?" Ellie felt her chest tighten, a dull ache pressing against her ribs. But now, it wasn't the right moment to let herself crumble in front of him. She forced a bitter smile, her voice laced with mockery. "If I'd let you know, how would I have witnessed such a captivating performance?" Gavin's expression darkened. Clearly, he wasn't amused. "Let's talk in the living room," he said, his tone clipped. She followed him silently. In the living room, Gavin crossed his arms, his patience visibly thinning. "Ellie," he began, "I used to love you, I really did. But now... I love Olivia. Feelings can't be forced, and there's no point in dragging this out. Since you're back, I'll talk to my parents tomorrow, and we'll meet with your family to discuss breaking off the engagement." The words hit like a slap to the face. Ellie and Gavin had been childhood sweethearts, the kind of couple people admired. Their families approved of their relationship, and the two of them were considered a perfect match. But everything had changed three years ago. That was when the Nelson family found their biological daughter, Jane Nelson, who had been missing for twenty years. It was only then that Ellie learned the truth—she wasn't their real daughter. She had been adopted from an orphanage as a stand-in for Jane. The Parker family wasted no time. The moment they found out, they came knocking to end the engagement. ***** Ellie could still vividly remember that day. Gavin had stood before both families, gripping her hand tightly. "I don't care if Ellie has Nelson blood or not," he had declared. "I don't care who she is. She's the only woman I'll marry!" Those words had brought her to tears. She had truly believed he was the one she would grow old with. But now... He had changed. Ellie had convinced herself it was because they had spent too much time apart. So, after graduating, she turned down a high-paying job offer overseas and came back home, determined to repair the cracks in their relationship. And now, Gavin was throwing it all away in the most humiliating way possible. If she insisted on keeping him around, it would only be even more pathetic. What stung the most wasn't even the cheating—it was the way Gavin acted afterward. The complete lack of guilt. For a long while, Ellie didn't say a word, and Gavin looked at her indifferently. She sat stiffly on the sofa, her back straight and her head slightly lowered as she processed everything. Her delicate features were more than pleasant; they made her seem like a true masterpiece of art. She had always been beautiful—so beautiful that she was known across all of Lynelle for it. Once upon a time, Gavin had been proud to call her his. But after so many years, that pride had faded. He had grown tired of her beauty as if it were a dish he'd eaten too many times. And then, Olivia Clark entered his world. Olivia was nothing like Ellie. If Ellie was a lily—graceful, elegant, and understated—Olivia was a wild rose. She was bold, daring, and intoxicating. Before Gavin could realize it, he was already addicted to her. And with Olivia's status, choosing between the two of them wasn't hard. Gavin was eager to end this as soon as possible. He lit a cigarette. "I'll compensate you," he said bluntly. "Name your price, and I'll pay it. But I have one condition." Taking a puff, he continued, "The breakup has to look mutual. We'll say it was because of distance that we drifted apart. And... I want you to keep my relationship with Olivia out of it. I don't want anyone calling her a homewrecker." Ellie stared at him, momentarily stunned. Compensation? At first, she thought he felt guilty. But no—this was hush money. If Gavin had come to her and admitted his feelings for Olivia, if he had been honest and apologized, she might have let him go, no matter how much she loved him. She wasn't someone who clung to lost causes. But from the moment she caught him cheating until now, he hadn't shown the slightest hint of remorse. And now, he even had the gall to protect Olivia's reputation while treating her, his fiancée of seven years, like a nuisance. Obviously, her feelings meant nothing to him. Seven years of love, trust, and companionship crumbled because of a fleeting affair of only seven months. Ellie forced her tears back. Then, she looked up at Gavin and sneered. "It'll be rude to turn down such generosity. A hundred million, and we're done." Olivia happened to overhear them as she left the bedroom, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What? A hundred million? Are you insane?" Ignoring her, Ellie kept her gaze locked on Gavin. "We've been together since high school. Seven years. Seven years of my youth. A hundred million isn't too much to ask, is it? Our engagement ends the moment the money is in my account." She stood, ready to leave, but Olivia stepped in her way, fury etched across her face. "You've got to be kidding me!" Olivia sneered, jabbing a finger at her. "If you were actually the Nelson' real daughter, maybe you'd deserve it. But you're nothing but a bastard—an orphan no one wanted. You should be grateful Gavin stayed with you this long. A hundred million? You're delusional. Even if you worked the streets every night for ten years, you wouldn't make that much money!" Three years ago, when Ellie was exposed as a fake heiress, she had endured endless mockery. Back then, all she did was cry. Even her adoptive parents considered her an eyesore and sent her abroad. But those three years abroad had taught her something important: there were always some things she couldn't turn away from. It wasn't her fault to be their adoptive daughter. It wasn't her fault that she didn't know who her biological parents were. And if none of these was her fault, why should she bear the shame? So, when Olivia barked at her with nothing but malice, Ellie raised her hand and slapped her hard across the face. The next second, a loud smack echoed throughout the room.
