Knox's P.O.V
My lungs burned as I filled them with air. I had just finished running my laps and was bent with my hands on my knees so I could recollect myself. It took only a few seconds to be steadily back on my feet as I observed the warriors, who were sitting along the grass.
''Find sparing partners, we don't have all day!" My voice boomed. My beta came to stand next to me as we had been soaring partners for a long time now and he was the only one that came close to beating me. Everyone else hurried off to find someone to spar with and very soon we were all in our respective circles.
''You are to spar only in human form, using your wolf is strictly forbidden! Whoever taps out, leaves the circle, or is on the ground for over three seconds loses! Understood?"
''Yes, Alpha!" Was heard throughout the crowd before the sounds turned to grunts and pants.
I circled Zane, observing his every move. He walked in sync with me, waiting for me to make the first move. I pretended to draw a punch to his stomach, but he didn't buy it. I smirked, knowing he was getting better. Thinking I was distracted, he attempted to hit me in the jaw, but I was faster and managed to grab his hand before it made contact with my face. Still holding him by the arm, I managed to kick him in the stomach. He bent down slightly to catch his breath, but in that time I flipped him over and he landed on his back, hitting his head.
I could feel my sister's eyes on me as I fought with her mate. She quietly yelped every time I made a move or sent him crashing to the ground, but it wasn't quiet enough for me not to notice. She had to get used to it or else I wouldn't be the only one throwing punches at her mate.
Zane pulled my legs from behind, but I only stumbled backwards before landing steadily on my feet. I pulled Zane's legs the same way he had pulled mine, drawing a punch to his stomach at the same time. He tried to steady himself like I had, but didn't manage as he flew to the ground with one final punch. Counting to three, I pulled him up and he gave me a small bow.
''Not even a punch, Beta!" I scolded him. He rubbed his hand across the back of his head and wiped a few drops of blood.
''You're too good, alpha!" I nodded and walked away to observe the rest of the pack's sparing matches.
What he said wasn't a compliment, it was an acknowledgment. I had worked hard to be in this position ever since I was a small child. The only difference was that now wolves looked up to me instead of laughing at me for every mistake I made. It took blood, sweat, and tears to get to where I was today and no one could take my hard work away from me.
I didn't even have to fully turn around to notice my sister had run to her mate. She was currently checking him for injuries as he reassured her he was ok. I walked over to them and stood with my arms folded in front of my chest, observing them.
''If you don't want your mate to get it handed to him again don't baby him that much." I whispered in her ear.
She didn't react as she went back to checking Zane for any injuries. Since I was done, I left the training field and went back inside the packhouse. Unmated she-wolves eyed me from a distance and some younger ones even giggled with blushing cheeks when I ran a hand through my hair to fix it.
When I made it to my suit I sighed in annoyance, suddenly more agitated than usual. I threw my clothes across the room and stepped into the huge shower, turning the taps on. My muscles seemed exhausted all of a sudden, screaming at me to go lay down under the warmth of the water. My eyes were drooping closed, feeling too heavy to remain open. The glimpse I had caught of the girl filled my mind and for a second all I could see was the honey blonde of her hair.
I closed my eyes, letting the water beat against the top of my head as I desperately tried to push her out of my mind. Kane was still not talking to me so the headache was still there, but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle.
I quickly scrubbed my body clean, making sure to rid myself of any little remains of her scent lingering on my skin. When I was done, I wrapped a towel around my waist and left my chest bare. Water dripped from my jet-black hair as I rummaged through my drawers, trying to find something to wear.
In the end, I settled for black jeans and a black polo T-shirt with an Adidas logo imprinted on the top right corner. I buckled a belt over my jeans and dried my hair. Looking over at the mirror I realized that the only thing contrasting the black were my light grey eyes.
I was sat in my office chair, going through the preparations my Beta and I had worked on for the rescue of the girls stuck in the trafficking ring. Maps, funds, and warriors' pack identification documents were all scattered around my desk. Someone knocked from outside the door and I picked up the scent to be my sister's.
, Come in!" I sighed. The last thing I wanted to do was talk to her when I had that much work to do.
She stepped in, closing the door behind her with a gentle thud before sitting in a chair opposite me and crossing her legs. We stared at each other for a few seconds as I waited for her to talk.
''Where the hell were you!" She asked, her tone surprising me. She hadn't talked to me that way since I broke her mate's jaw once.
''Not your business, as far as I'm concerned!" I snarled.
''I'm your sister, I want you to be safe." She continued her tone softening the more she spoke.
''I don't need your concern. You can leave!" I replied coldly. She was going to say something else but decided against it. I saw her roll her eyes before she slammed the door behind her.
When the sun had long set my warriors, Beta, and I were stood in front of the packhouse with a bunch of SUVs parked around us. Zane and I were barking orders, watching as the fastest of the warriors shifted into their wolves and took off. We watched as they ran in between the trees until they disappeared into the distance.
''Silence!" I roared, getting everyone's attention. The pack warriors and Zane turned to look at me, any and all movements and chatter dying down.
''The wolves that you just saw will wait for us hidden near the lake of the northern border. All of you had been grouped in groups of three, which the Beta has already informed you about. Each group takes an SUV and parks near the lake. The rest of the wolves would have already made sure to clear our surroundings so we would immediately jump in battle once you have been given instructions. Go, and let power and luck be with us!"
The men nodded and bowed their heads respectfully before scattering off to their vehicle and taking off. I stepped into the passenger seat and looked out the window to see my sister crying on her mate's shoulder.
''Be safe, I love you!" I heard her say as Zane kissed her cheek and started approaching me.
''Took you long enough! It's not like you're going for a walk in the park, Beta!" I told him sternly.
''I'm sorry, Alpha, Rose needed to say her goodbyes." He apologized, but I had long since stopped listening. The only sound I heard was the engine roaring to life before we took off.
As I stared out the window I couldn't help, but wonder what it would be like if my own mate was here to say goodbye to me and hug me. Tell me she would miss me. But there was no way I had a mate anyways. There was a mistake. Instead, I had no one to look forward to me coming back. I didn't need anyone to, nor did I want it because no one truly thinks the best for you if they didn't have a way to take advantage, but it still crossed my mind.
She crossed my mind. More often than I would like to admit. Her scent and the tiny bit I got to see of her. For the first time, I didn't like going away. I didn't like leaving the place that took my childhood away and caused me nothing, but pain. In fact, I wanted to stay.
I felt something weird, something I don't remember ever feeling before, and had no idea how to identify.
''You don't want to leave her, you don't want to be away because you finally have something to make you happy after all these years." Kane finally spoke after ignoring me the whole day.
''Happy isn't a word that exists for us, Kane."
''You're just a stubborn ass who can't accept the fact that things can change!" I growled in warning, feeling the wolf go to the back of my mind, his annoyance evident in his aura.
''Alpha, are you ok?" My Beta asked, his eyes switching from me to the road. My eyes returned back to normal and I could see the damage I had done to the car. My seat was slashed by my claws, completely ruined. I gestured for him to back off, using my hand, and went back to staring out of the window.
I kept catching him watching me from the corner of his eyes as he tried to go unnoticed. The window's reflection was something he probably hadn't considered well enough. I took a deep breath, letting my frustration out, and turned to him.
''What?" I asked sternly. He kept his gaze on the road, a lump forming in his throat.
''Alpha, I-" He mumbled, but I cut him off.
''Can't stay out of wolves' business?" I replied instead of him.
The car remained silent after that, the only thing heard was the screeching of the tires on the road.
When we arrived, wolves were already waiting for us next to the lake we had mapped out. Some of them were drinking water and cooling off, while others had decided on simply laying on the cold grass. As soon as they saw the Beta and I's SUV approach they formed a straight line, waiting for instructions.
I nodded towards the head warrior of the shifted wolves and he pressed on my link to speak to me. I let him in and soon his voice filled my mind.
''Alpha, the coast is clear. We have killed all of the guards on patrol and we managed to do it unnoticed. We smelled about 130 other male wolves, but the females' scents were very faint so we have no idea how many there are." He informed me and shut off our link.
I passed the information to Zane in our own private link, then all the remaining unshifted wolves scattered behind trees to strip off their clothes, and soon our wolves covered the perimeter. Kane's black fur and height stood amongst the others and I could feel his pride as soon as his paws hit the ground.
I linked each group instructions on where they will attack from and what they would do. Once everyone got the information they needed, they howled to the moon, praying for success, and we all ran towards the building the bastards were keeping the she-wolves in.
Zane stayed outside with half of the wolves, while the other half and I barged inside. We could immediately smell blood and hear the screams of the terrified she-wolves, but we couldn't linger on anything for too long as the enemy wolves charged toward us in groups.
Sensing that I was the Alpha, six wolves pounced on me at once. Two pinned me to the floor by my back legs as the other four tried to claw at my throat, stomach, and jaw. One of them managed to get a good swipe on my cheek, which made blood ooze out and trickle down my fur. With the animal now close to me I managed to harshly hit my head against his, causing him to stumble backwards. Some of my pack members pried the wolves who were pinning me down, killing them on the spot.
Getting back up on my paws, I kicked one of the remaining enemies, sending him crashing into the other wolf. With only one left, I managed to claw its throat and watched as its lifeless body fell limp to the ground.
The girls' whimpers kept getting louder the longer they watched the blood bath. Most of them were shaking and all of them had tears streaming down their faces. I gestured in the direction of the girls, a few of my warriors taking off to protect them.
I jumped back in battle, making a few clean kills and kicks. The wolves outside, along with my Beta trapped the entrances so my pack was now all together, working side by side to kill our enemies. One of the wolves' scents reminded me of my mate's scent so I pounced on him, taking his fur in my mouth and dragging him outside. I left him with one of my warriors, who was healing his wounds, and went back inside. To my surprise, we had already won in under an hour and a half, dead bodies covering the whole of the building.
My pack was already carrying the terrified girls in their snouts as they thrashed and cried. Some of them had passed out from fear, but I could tell none of them were fighting us, making me wonder what the bastards had done to them.
Kane acknowledged his pack proudly, letting me shift back. I watched victorious as my warriors loaded girls in the SUVs and soon we were back on the road, on our way home. I could feel Kane's excitement growing the closer we got to the packhouse.
''Someone's happy about our win!" I teased. He barked out a wolfy laugh.
''More excited to be coming back home to her." I shook my head, but said nothing, too exhausted to fight with him again.
