Knox's P.O.V
I found myself walking without a direction again. Kane was shouting curses and insults at me, trying to shift and making my head feel as if needles were piercing my flesh. The worst part was I knew I deserved the pain. I knew that most of the insults were true, but what was I supposed to do?
I couldn't go back and tell him to let her live. I couldn't let her live, but I also couldn't let her die. I was stuck. Trapped in between my own mind and thoughts, my fears. To top it off I hadn't slept in such a long time, I had no idea if I was sane anymore.
Much to my dismay, I returned to her, carefully stepping into the room. I selfishly returned, hoping to calm Kane down with her scent, while I knew she would die because of me.
And then I made a decision. She wouldn't die, she didn't deserve it. But she also couldn't stay here. Perhaps, if I send her away, send her to another pack, the Alpha could make sure she had a good life ahead of her. It was the most logical decision, hopefully it would benefit both of us.
I sat on the chair in the corner of the room, feeling my limbs get heavier and my eyelids droop closed. Kane settled, enjoying the scent of his mate, and left me alone. I took one final look at her perfect face and let sleep finally succumb me into the comfortable darkness.
Zane's P.O.V
I was sitting on the barstool of our kitchen eating breakfast along with my mate. The packhouse seemed more tense than usual for some reason so we decided to eat alone in our suite. Rose also seemed more tense than usual, quietly picking at her food. Her usual bubbly personality and huge smile were replaced by a frown she tried to hide from me.
Unable to take her sadness anymore, I take her hand in mine, making her drop her fork.
''What's on your mind, angel?" I asked, tucking a stray hair behind her ear with my free hand. She brushed it off, giving me a tiny smile, which she assumed she could fool me with. ''It's nothing." She mumbled, jumping to her feet for a new fork.
''Angel, we share emotions, I can tell when you lie." She sat down next to me and sighed.
''Knox has been off lately. We had a fight too." Her mumbles were silenced by the dragging of the fork, which she pushed her eggs around with. I took it from her hand, feeding her a bite as she stared at me. ''I also noticed it. Something's wrong, but he won't tell me what. His behavior has been weird lately."
''Weirder than usual, that is." She rolled her eyes. Her concern for her brother made my heart melt and at the same time, it broke for her. He only pushed her away the deeper she cared. He dimmed what little she could light up in herself each time he pushed her away.
He wasn't always like this. He was once fun, caring, protective and the life of the party, if you could really call a child that. He and I were best friends, spending every and any moment he could sneak away. That all ended with the incident, after that, he was only a shell of what he once was, and sadly, I couldn't say I blamed him.
''I don't want you to worry. You know how he is, he'll be back to normal soon." I finally said as I got down from my stool and carried my plate to the sink.
''You didn't eat anything!" She scolded, eyeing my plate.
''I need to meet the Alpha," I explained, placing a soft kiss on her cheek.
She walked with me to the door, where I slipped my shoes on. I kissed her again, not wanting to let go and leave her alone, knowing she wasn't in a good mood. Zion also wasn't happy to leave Rain, preferring to go on a run with his mate rather than work.
''Rain doesn't want you to go," Rose mumbled shyly, a blush tinting her rosy cheeks. I chuckled.
''Zion doesn't want to leave you either." I pulled her in for yet another kiss. She pushed me towards the door with a giggle.
''Go before I lock you in here!" I chuckled, but left, not wanting to upset the Alpha further.
I walked around the packhouse, heading to the Alpha's office. I passed members, which greeted me along the way. I was happy to say I was in a good relationship with the pack. Everyone respected me and my decisions and I was happy to call this place home. After I found out Rosalie was my mate we moved into one of the suites on the upper floors and together we took up duties as the Beta couple.
I knocked on the door, but got no answer. After standing there for a couple of minutes I decided to just enter, hoping the Alpha wouldn't be too mad, but he wasn't inside. I noticed his desk had been replaced, which probably had something to do with his fight with Rose. I could only hope he wasn't in too bad of a mood. The piles of papers on the floor were also collected into neat stacks on the new desk.
I didn't let myself observe the room for too long. Instead, I closed the door behind me and tried to mind link the Alpha, but his block was up, and no matter how much I pushed, he wouldn't let me in.
I thought he might still be asleep as he seemed more tired than usual the past few days, but when I knocked on his bedroom door I once again received no answer. I carefully opened the door, not wanting to disturb his peace, only to find out he wasn't there either. Not only that, but he hadn't been here at all last night.
Worried, I worked to pick up his scent amongst the others. It took a few minutes, but I managed to catch a glimpse of his scent, which I immediately started following. The further I walked, the more my heart dropped. If I was right, then the Alpha was in the pack hospital.
Surely if he was injured, the pack would have felt it. Maybe it was something minor or maybe he went just to check something out, but I couldn't shake the feeling of slight fear at the thought that my old friend and Alpha was injured and I had no idea.
His scent stopped in front of a door, where I knew the girl traded to our alpha was lying unconscious. Unfortunately, she never showed signs of getting better. Zion seemed drawn to her in some way and I was hoping I would understand why, but seeing her condition, it was unlikely.
It wasn't anything romantic, since I was very much in love with my mate, but it was something I couldn't explain. My wolf tried to reach out to hers, but there was no sign of it, although we could smell a wolf in the girl. She wasn't like the others, I just didn't know why.
The Alpha's scent was mixed with the girl's and that of blood. I immediately pushed the door open, but didn't see what I expected. Any and all expectations of what could have been behind the door crumbled as I saw the girl still lying in the same position she had been for the past few weeks, and what shocked me the most, the Alpha peacefully sleeping on a chair in the corner of the room.
Suddenly, it all made sense. Why he wasn't sleeping and why he was more stressed than usual, he found someone he had hoped not to. I knew, or at least I used to know Knox well enough for me to know he no longer wanted anybody in his life after what had happened. I could only assume what finding her, especially here, fighting for her life, was doing to him.
It also made sense why Zion was somehow drawn to her-she was our future Luna. That is, if she made it and if she wanted anything to do with our pack. I knew how hard it was for Rose to accept me as a mate because of her past and I could only assume how scared, both mentally and physically, the girl in the bed was.
I didn't get to think about it for too long as the Alpha growled at me, snapping me out of my thoughts. Only then did I realize how wrong what I was doing looked. I was staring at his mate, and not only that, but my own mate was his sister. Before I even realized what was happening my head was smashed against the door and a fist collided with my jaw.
''Alpha, please let me explain!" I pleaded, trying to catch my breath. Kane, who had taken over, let me down and I managed to get to my feet before I fell. Now in his human form, the Alpha sat back in his chair, but his eyes never left mine. His gaze sent chills down my spine, his eyes throwing daggers at me.
I was used to the soft grey color of his eyes since they were the same color as the lock in my mate's soft hair, but in the past years his eyes have been anything, but soft. Nothing could compare to the looks he was giving me right now though.
I cleared my throat before finding the courage to speak again.
''Alpha, is she your mate?" He continued observing me for a few more moments, but they felt like the longest moments of my life. Finally, he nodded.
''You won't tell anyone. Even my sister!" He ordered, using his Alpha voice. All I could do was pathetically nod, his aura suffocating me.
He sat a bit more comfortably, allowing me to also feel more relaxed.
''I need you to do something for me." He told me.
''Of course." A nod, then silence again.
''I need to send her away. Silver claws pack. You're the only one I could entrust her to. Will you take her?" I heard the uncertainty of his voice, how badly he didn't want to give her up. I didn't even need to ask, the reason was more than evident. I looked back at the blond girl and for a moment I wondered just what it would be like if the pack gained a Luna.
I couldn't help, but wonder what Knox would be like if he had a mate by his side to chase away his demons and give me back my best friend. Give me back the guy, who smiled and felt emotions other than anger and guilt. Maybe even what it would be like for Rose and her to become friends, to raise our pups together one day, but that was a stretch.
I knew Knox wasn't ready to fight his demons. He wasn't ready to let go of the past. Perhaps he never will be. It would hurt a lot less if I knew I could help, if I could do something, but he wouldn't let me close. Not even for a second after the incident was he the same. Not even for a second. I had lost my best friend for good, and even if he was ready to fight the past, this girl wouldn't be able to help him, she would have too much on her own mind.
His decision, all though painful, was the right one and both him and I knew it.
''If you're sure that's what you want I would do anything in my power to get her to the Silver claws pack safe."
He wasn't sure. I could see it in his eyes. No matter how determined he pretended to be, it seemed he had known who the girl was to him for a long time now. There was an ugly uncertainty not only in his eyes, but in the situation. The Moon goddess knew what she was doing when she paired the two together, I could only hope we got to find out before it became too late.
A/N: Hi friends! Thank you for giving my book a chance and I hope you are enjoying it! Zane knows our female MC is Knox's mate! Will he take her to the other pack or will something prevent it?
