CHAPTER 9: CHRIS HALES

The buzzing sound from my phone was becoming annoying, people in the train were already looking at me weirdly, I opened my bag and brought it out, I swiped left and the annoying name on my screen went away, I put the phone back into my bag. I just want to get to my dorm, take a hot shower and sleep off. My eyes were already weary from crying.

I brought out my phone and opened the camera to look at my face. My eyes were puffy already, so I turned to look around. A few hours ago I was on a train blushing and excited about going to meet Prince will. Now I am going back with swollen eyes and a runny nose. I blinked to hold back tears forming again, I signed as I looked outside. The view is so beautiful at night, the buzzing started again Why can’t he just leave me alone?

The train came to a halt, and I came down finally. I breathed the air in, it was already dark, but many people were still walking about. I checked the time on my phone, and it read 9:40, I called Stephanie firstly to tell her I was coming back to the dorm, but she wasn’t picking the same with Ella and Vicky. I took a cab going to the school gate.

“Are you going inside the school?” The cab man asked me.

Yes, I replied to him. I placed my bag beside me.

You are a fresher, right? Yes I replied again, while I pray he doesn’t ask me any more questions, I wasn’t in the mood for a conversation.

“Once it’s 10pm you can’t go in anymore, hope you have someone you can call, so you can stay at their place tonight, I have been driving around here for six years, once it’s 10’clock those security guys would send you back, only people that are coming from inside the school can come outside and once they do, they can’t go back inside.”

This can’t be happening, today can’t get any worse, can it? I will have to beg them to let me inside because I don’t even have any friends I can call.” I told him.

There are rules you can’t go in, I have seen them send back different students, you should have known the rules by now and when I tell some freshers they don’t believe me until we get to the gate. He said laughing.

I didn’t know what to say, so I was just mute, wondering where I was going to stay. Maybe if I explained it to them, they would understand.

“Should we still go, or I should drive you to your friend's place, so you won’t pay twice.” He asked me as he turned to look at me.

“I don’t have any friends to call, just stop me there. I said, unsure of what to do.” I don’t know him, either. What if this is one of their tricks to kidnap people? I looked at him, and he didn't seem like a bad person. What if he wasn’t lying, where would I go?

We arrived at the front of my school gate by 10:20, I tried to call my friends again, and they were picking, I paid the cab guy, and before he left he gave me his card to call him in case they don’t allow me in, and he was still driving around, I wanted to avoid being rude, so I just took the card from him and thanked him.

I walked to the gate, dragging my luggage bag along with me praying for a miracle to happen, immediately I got close to a bright light shine into my eyes, I used my hands to cover my eyes.

“Where are you going?” The security man asked me to put his touch-down as he walked towards me. My chest was beating so softly, as I walked towards him. Two girls were coming from inside the school and when they reached they showed them their ID card, and they allowed them to go outside. I just stood there looking, and I didn't know what to say.

“I asked you a question, where are you going?” The security man said while walking up to me, he shined his touch light on my face again.

“I want to go inside, I live in the hostel,'' I said slowly.

You didn’t read the hostel form you filled? Or you didn’t read the school rules? You can’t go in.

Please, sir, I don’t have a place to stay. Tears were forming again. This night is the worst night ever. I shouldn't have gone to see Prince will. Please sir, just let me go in, I won’t do it again.

“I don’t make the rules, I am only following them. You see those cameras,'' he said pointing to the CCTV camera. Once I let you inside, I lose my job. If you have a friend you can call do so now, or you can look for a cheap motel hereby. He said, as he walked back to meet his other colleagues, they didn’t even say anything to me; they just looked at me and turned their eyes away as they resumed talking.

My phone was ringing again, my teeth clenched. If it were Prince will calling, I would cuss him out so bad he will regret knowing me. I picked it up and it was Ella,

Hey babe, I saw your call, sorry I didn’t pick up watsup?

I am in front of the school gate, they won’t allow me in. All the tears I was holding back flowed out.

Why? Wait, are you crying? What happened? I thought you were with Prince will?

It’s a long story, where are you guys? I managed to say.

We all went to one party, as you left us, we were bored. Then Victoria told us one of her friends invited her to a party they were having, so we decided to go with her. They are even drunk right now, they are already sleeping upstairs.

“ Oh, where is the party?”

I don’t really know here, we came with a car. Victoria's friend came to pick us up, and the place is quite far. It's going to be 12 before you get here. Let me call one of my course mates that lives outside the school if she can let you crash at her place.

“Okay,” I said as she hung up.

The security guys were still looking at me, then a car was coming out of the school, the light shining at me. I dragged my luggage bag and moved to the side. The security guys stood up and opened the gate. The car was so clean, must be someone wealthy.

They were chatting with the person in the car as they turned to look at me, and continued talking. Hopefully, the person was pleading on my behalf. The car drove outside, and they closed the gate back. I bent my hair down staring at my phone hoping Ella calls back.

The car stopped and the door opened. I looked up to see who the person in the car was and behold it was Chris Hales. He was wearing a boomer jersey with eleven inscribed in it. I remember he plays for the school basketball team, he looked as if he had been practicing.
