Chapter 1
Rain pelted the glass windows of the café. Elena sat by the corner, her hands wrapped around a half-empty coffee cup. She wasn’t waiting for anyone, at least not officially. But deep down, she knew she was waiting for him. Daniel. She had met him two weeks ago at a charity gala she almost skipped. He wasn’t her type. Too charming. Too polished. But he said things that clung to her like shadows. “You feel like someone I was supposed to meet years ago,” he had whispered under the chandeliers. And now, he had asked to see her here. Her phone buzzed—a text: Five minutes. Don’t move. Her heart quickened. The door swung open, the bell above it chiming. Daniel stepped in, shaking off the rain. He smiled when he saw her, but his eyes carried something else—an urgency. He slid into the seat across from her. “You came,” he said. “Of course,” Elena replied, though she wasn’t sure why. Daniel leaned closer, lowering his voice. “Elena, I need you to trust me. Something’s happening, and I can’t explain everything yet.” She frowned. “That’s not how normal dates go, Daniel.” He smirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “This isn’t normal.” Then he slipped a small folded note into her hand under the table. “Don’t read it here,” he warned. She stared at him, pulse racing. “What is this?” “Your life might depend on it.” They left the café together, rain soaking their clothes as they hurried down the street. Daniel hailed a cab, but Elena hesitated. “Where are we even going?” “Somewhere safe,” he said. Her instincts screamed at her to leave. But the memory of his touch, the way he looked at her as if he knew her soul, pulled her forward. She got in. Inside the cab, silence stretched. Finally, Elena whispered, “You’re scaring me.” “I’d rather you be scared than dead.” Her breath caught. “Dead? Daniel, what the hell—” He grabbed her hand. His grip was firm, desperate. “Someone’s been watching you. Since before I met you.” “That makes no sense.” “Doesn’t have to. Just—don’t go home tonight.” Her phone buzzed again. Another text. She glanced down, and her stomach dropped. Elena. Get away from him. He’s lying. The sender: Unknown. She shoved the phone into her bag, hiding the tremor in her hands. The cab pulled up outside an old townhouse. Daniel paid the driver quickly, ushering Elena inside. The place smelled of leather and old books. “Stay here,” he said, locking the door. “Daniel, you’re not making sense,” she snapped. “Tell me the truth!” He turned, jaw tight. “The truth? You wouldn’t believe me.” “Try me.” He exhaled, stepping closer. “I wasn’t supposed to meet you. Not like this. I was sent to watch you.” Her chest tightened. “Sent? By who?” “That’s the part I can’t say. But the moment I saw you, everything changed. Elena. I fell for you.” Her heart ached at the words she wanted to believe. But her phone buzzed again. This time she looked. He’s the reason your sister disappeared. Don’t trust him. Her vision blurred. Her sister, who had been gone for two years without a trace. She staggered back. “What did you do?” Daniel’s face went pale. “No. Elena, listen to me. That’s not true.” She raised her voice, panic flaring. “Did you take her?” “I tried to save her!” he shouted. His eyes burned with anguish. “But I failed. That’s why I can’t fail with you.” Tears welled in Elena’s eyes. She backed toward the door. “I should never have come.” Daniel reached for her, but she shoved him away. “Don’t touch me.” “Elena, please—if you leave now, you’ll never know the truth.” Her chest heaved. “The truth? All I know is that you’ve been lying since the moment I met you.” Her phone buzzed again. She glanced down. Check the note. Now. Hands shaking, she pulled the folded paper from her pocket. She opened it. Her stomach lurched. Scrawled in rushed handwriting were the words: Trust no one. Not even me. Her gaze shot to Daniel. His face hardened, unreadable. “Elena,” he said softly, “you weren’t supposed to see that yet.” Her pulse thundered in her ears. “What does that mean?” He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. “It means part of me wants to save you… and part of me doesn’t.” Before she could respond, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed outside the townhouse. The door handle rattled violently. Someone was trying to break in. Daniel’s eyes darkened. “They’ve found us.” Elena froze, torn between the man who might love her and the stranger who might have destroyed her life. The lock began to snap. She clutched the note in her hand, breath ragged. And then— The lights went out. Darkness swallowed the townhouse. Elena’s breath came in shallow bursts. The note trembled in her hand. She could barely see Daniel’s outline, but she felt his presence too close, too dangerous. “Stay quiet,” he whispered. Outside, the footsteps grew louder, the door rattling against the lock. Someone wanted in. Someone strong enough to break through. “Who is it?” she whispered back. Daniel didn’t answer. The door burst open at a crash—a beam of light cut through the dark. A man stepped inside, tall, broad-shouldered, a gun raised. “Elena, come with me,” he commanded. She froze. “Who are you?” The man’s gaze stayed locked on Daniel. “I’m the one who’s been trying to keep you alive. He—” he gestured at Daniel with the gun “—is the reason your sister’s gone.” Daniel moved fast, pulling Elena behind him. “Don’t listen to him, Elena. He’s the liar.” “Then explain,” she snapped, voice shaking. “Why does he know about my sister?” Daniel’s jaw tightened. Silence.
