shattered dream
Chapter 1: Shattered Dreams
Jasmine's world crumbled as she stared at the divorce papers in her hand. Mr. Barry, Liam's lawyer, stood before her, his expression devoid of empathy.
"I'm afraid it's all quite straightforward, Mrs. Lancaster," he said, his voice carrying no emotion .
"Your husband has decided to end the marriage, citing irreconcilable differences."
Jasmine's eyes widened as she scanned the documents, her mind running with shock and disbelief. There was no mention of a specific reason for the divorce, just a blanket statement that left her feeling surprised and betrayed.
But it was the next part that made her blood run cold:
"Per the earlier agreements, all properties and assets acquired during the marriage will revert to Mr. Lancaster."
Jasmine felt like she'd been punched in the gut. She had invested so much of herself, her time, and her resources into their life together. The thought of losing everything was almost too much to bear.
"But how can this thing be? You are our family lawyer and should be on the side of this marriage." She pointed with pain in her heart.
"You must be mistaken, ma'am. I am your husband's lawyer, not the family lawyer," he replied, avoiding her gaze.
Jasmine reached for her phone to call Liam, but he didn't answer. She tried again as her fingers trembled terribly.
"Pick your call, Liam, and tell me this is a lie," She whispered, hoping this could all be a prank.
Just this morning, she received a message that all her investments in Tafol Enterprise have gone to the wind as the company has folded up and ran away with investors' money. Liam had convinced her to invest in the company, citing their potential to bring huge returns. She has gone all in against her principles and experiences as a businesswoman. Just as she wanted to call Liam, the lawyer entered with the divorce papers. It was like everything was planned to frustrate her that day.
Immediately, she tried calling her sister, but her line kept saying she was available.
Without a word, Jasmine turned and ran out of the house, the divorce papers still clutched in her hand. She needed someone to talk to, someone who could offer her comfort and guidance.
She sped to her sister Jacinta's house, tears streaming down her face. She wondered how she couldn't see this coming. She had heard stories of women who were defrauded through marriage, and she bragged to anyone who cared to listen to her that no one could ever defraud her. She felt she had all the experiences to detect the dark side of humans.
Many road users cursed her bitterly because of her driving, but she didn't care about the world then. She was consumed by rage and sadness.
Seeing her sister's car outside the apartment, she felt relieved. She Horned thrice, hoping the door would open before she got there, but it was not.
She knocked, but there was no response, so she used her spare key, thinking that perhaps she was sleeping.
When she got inside, she noticed Liam's handbag in the living room and immediately became curious.
She tiptoed to her room, and what she heard sent shivers down her spine. Liam was talking, and Jacinta, her sister, giggled at every word. He was telling her about how he had successfully defrauded her using the Tafol enterprise and how his lawyer had also served her divorce papers. From their conversations, Jasmine could pick up that Jacinta, her sister, was the company's original owner, and they were in this together.
When she could no longer bear what they were saying, she burst through the door and saw a sight that shattered her heart into a million pieces.
Liam and Jacinta were lying together on the bed, their bodies entwined in a way that left no doubt about their relationship. They quickly disengaged from their position, but it was too late, as she had heard and seen enough.
"Please, if it is not what you think, I can explain ." Liam tried to explain, walking towards her.
But Jasmine couldn't even hear what he was saying. Her world went dark, and she stumbled backward, her mind reeling with shock and betrayal. She turned and ran, not stopping until she reached her car.
She sped away, determined to inform her father about the divorce and the betrayal.
She now understood why Jacinta would always support him whenever she complained to Jascinta about any decision Liam persuaded her to make. She couldn't believe that a step-sister she loved with her whole heart could stab her in the back. If she had known, she would have consulted with her father,r, but she didn't want to look like a little girl always running to her father. But now she must return to her father to spill everything, admit her mistakes, and see how he can help her.
But as she drove, she noticed a car following her, gaining speed with every passing moment. Her heart skipped immediately because the driver drove dangerously.
On closer observation through her teary eyes, she noticed the car belonged to her sister and felt a little relieved, thinking she was chasing her to apologize for what had happened.
She slowed down a little, and the car came beside her. She noticed Liam was driving, and Jascinta was by the side. But there was something about her look that gave her chills. She wasn't looking sorry; instead, an evil smile was planted on her face. She also noticed Liam was trying to communicate something, but she couldn't hear it and didn't care. After a while, she noticed they slowed down, and she went ahead with no intention of engaging them in any conversations
Suddenly, her car was rammed from behind, spinning her out of control. She desperately tried to control the vehicle, but she could not do so. As she crashed, she had a glimpse of the vehicle that rammed into her to discover it was her sister's car.
Jasmine's scream was cut short as her car crashed, throwing her into darkness.
And then, there was nothing.
