In this house, loyalty is a weapon.

To the world, Julian is the golden boy.

With a perfect GPA, a chest full of graduation medals, and a "boy next door" smile that makes Ivy—the only girl he’s ever loved—feel like the center of the universe, his future looks bright. But as the sun sets on his graduation day, the tassels are tucked away, and the smiles vanish.

Behind the stone walls of an unnamed house lies The Bastion.

It isn't a typical fraternity. It’s a shadow organization built on military precision, cold-blooded discipline, and a hierarchy that doesn't care about honors degrees. Here, Julian isn't a success story; he is Candidate 04. In this "hood," the only currency is absolute obedience, and the only way out is through a gauntlet that breaks most men.

A double life. A single mistake.

As the demands of The Bastion turn from grueling drills to dangerous assignments, the line between Julian’s two worlds begins to bleed. He is a protector by day and a weapon by night. But Ivy is starting to notice the bruises he can't explain and the coldness in his eyes that wasn't there before.

In a world where leaving is considered desertion and secrets are kept at the end of a barrel, Julian must decide: Will he protect the brotherhood that made him a man, or the woman who makes him feel human?

Chapter 1: The Weight of Gold
The gold medals felt heavier than they looked. As Julian stood on the commencement stage, the applause of the crowd sounded like distant static. To everyone else, he was the success story—the honors student with the easy smile and the bright future. But as he looked down at the front row, his eyes didn't land on his parents. They landed on a row of five men sitting perfectly upright, their suits tailored to perfection, their faces expressionless. They weren't here to celebrate his degree. They were here to collect their investment. "Congratulations, Julian," the Dean whispered, shaking his hand. "The world is yours." No, Julian thought, his fingers grazing the cold metal of his highest honors medal. The world belongs to the Bastion. I’m just occupying it. Two hours later, the toga was gone. The celebratory dinner with Ivy had been cut short—a "family emergency," he’d lied, hating the way her face fell when he pulled his hand away from hers. Now, he stood in front of a heavy oak door three miles off-campus. There were no Greek letters on this house. Just a small, bronze plaque of a shield and a spear. The door swung open. The warmth of the spring evening was instantly replaced by the smell of floor wax and starch. "Candidate 04," a voice barked. Julian snapped his heels together, his spine turning into a steel rod. The transition was so practiced it was terrifying. The "boy next door" who had shared a milkshake with Ivy at noon was dead. "Sir, yes, sir," Julian replied, his voice devoid of emotion. A man with a buzz cut stepped into the light. This was Miller, the Drill Master. He didn't look at Julian’s face; he looked at his posture. He reached out and flicked the gold graduation medal that Julian still had tucked into his pocket—a reminder of the life he was supposed to be starting. "You think because you walked a stage today, you’re a leader?" Miller hissed, leaning in close enough that Julian could smell the peppermint on his breath. "In this hood, your GPA is zero. Your medals are scrap metal. You are a ghost until we give you a name." Miller stepped back, pointing to the floor. "The Line, Julian. Now." Julian dropped. His knuckles hit the cold hardwood, and the rhythmic sound of twenty other men "dropping" echoed from the basement below. He began the count, his graduation suit jacket straining at the shoulders. Outside, the sun was setting on the best day of his life. Inside, the night was just beginning.
