Chapter 1 How Dare You
The clothing store I worked for closed early. The local weather channel stated we were going to have a major hurricane that was due to hit land in the next hour or so. We boarded up the windows and all headed for home. It was a balmy August afternoon. The school kids would be coming back from break soon and Labor Day weekend was just around the corner.
The rain started to trickle, so I turned on my headlights. I was only a mile or so away from home. I pulled into my driveway and clicked the button for the garage. There was my husband's car and my sister's car, both high-end top-of-the-line porches. My husband, who I met when I was a sophomore in high school, and he was a senior, were instantly attracted to each other. He became a big-name lawyer working at his father's office, and I was working my way through my senior year of college. I was going to become a professional photographer. I didn't want Brian to pay for my degree, so I worked as many hours as I could to earn the money.
We married right after he graduated from college. It was a simple courthouse wedding with tons of lawyer words in the prenup that he suggested I sign. I pushed the button again in the garage and grabbed my purse, heading toward the house as quickly as I could. A bolt of lightning struck the grass, leaving a black spot. I turned to look, grateful I had stepped onto the porch and just missed the strike.
My sister is my husband's personal secretary. Having graduated the same year, he did and followed him to college, studying workplace management. She would constantly be over there, and they would be in her studies working on one merger or another. I opened the door and hung up my purse and keys when I heard loud noises floating through the house. They sounded like they were coming from my bedroom. There was moaning and grunting and screaming in ecstasy.
I made my way quietly up the stairs. My heart breaks with each step. The door to my room was wide open and there he was pounding into my sister, his naked ass hanging out for the world to see. My sister and her white blonde hair spread over the pillows, her breasts flopping around like something outside the show Baywatch. I pulled my phone out and started recording the scene in front of me.
I stood there just staring at them. My mouth is ajar as I watch them switch places and his hands grip her breasts while he plows into her from behind. I waited until they finished watching the whole time in disbelief as Brian and Luna breathed heavily as they laid back on the pillows, sweat glistening over their perfect bodies. I put my phone in my pocket with the camera facing out and walked into the room.
"You know you two put on quite the show?"
I said as I walked in, slowly clapping. The look of shock spread across both their faces.
"I'm just sorry that I missed the beginning. I know, I know this isn't what it looks like, or it was an accident. Well, that's fine. It could be an accident or not what it looks like, but I'll be grabbing my few items and you two can continue screwing at each other while I'm filing for divorce."
Brian had nothing to say. He was just shocked. I kept the camera running just in case and started packing the clothing and items that were mine and not bought by him. I grabbed my toiletries out of the walk-in bathroom. Everything I owned fit into a small duffle bag. I made my way back into the bedroom. They were attempting to get dressed. Brian called after me as I took my wedding and engagement ring off and left it on the dresser by the door.
"Izzy wait. Please wait, let me explain."
"Explain what? How is my sister prettier, funnier, and dresses better than me? Hmmmm. What could you possibly want to explain to me, Brian? I have loved you since I was fifteen. I have loved you for six years and this is how you repay my love. I want a divorce and I never want to see you again."
"Izzy. I'm sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen."
"Oh and what did you mean to happen? You broke my heart, Brian. You broke my heart. I won't stay with a man who cheats on me."
I grabbed my purse, my keys and tossed on my raincoat. I headed out the door and unlocked my car, hopping in. I turned the car on and turned the heat on to warm on and hopefully dry off a little. The rain had picked up. I crashed my head on the steering wheel, tears forming and starting to run down my face. Knocking on my window causes me to look up. Biran, soaking wet, was knocking on my window, yelling at me to come back inside so we could talk. I put my car into reverse and started backing down the driveway.
"DON'T LEAVE ME IZZY. PLEASE I'M SORRY! I LOVE YOU. I DIDN'T MEAN TO SLEEP WITH YOUR SISTER!"
I put my car in the drive and headed down the street. Brian tried running after me, but once I picked up speed, he slowly fell into the distance. He fell to the ground as my car turned a corner and was gone. My phone started ringing off the hook. I ignored each and every call. That was until I saw my father-in-law's name pop up. I decided to answer his call and he started yelling at me for not being a good wife. I told him that I had just walked in on Brian screwing my sister and that I had video proof. That seemed to shut him up quickly. I hung up the phone after a minute and refused to answer my phone after that.
I had no direct destination. I knew I needed to get as far away as I could from him. I will send my divorce papers as soon as I contact a divorce lawyer. I was so lost in thought I hadn't noticed the rain picking up and getting heavier. My car slipped in a puddle and that got me out of my haze. I slowed the car down and started looking for a hotel. I needed to hunker down somewhere before I had an accident.
I was driving along the road that connects to the bridge that goes from New Hampshire into Maine when I saw the waves get violent and start hitting the bridge. That bridge has been there for decades, lasted through tons of storms. I would be OK. Once I got to Maine, I could head to where my best friend has a family summer home. I could lie low there till I figured out my next move.
I started crossing the bridge. I was careful as the waves would reach the edge of the bridge, pushing the water over. Slow and steady, that's what I need to do. Go slow and steady and I will do it.
I crossed the other side and started making my way to Westbrook. The wind picked up more, and my car started being pushed back and forth. An hour later and I was still making my way through Sacco. A tractor trailer was heading towards me. He was swerving all over the road. He ended up in my line and I swerved out of the way. The wind did the rest, and before I knew it I was sliding down a cliff and into the woods, my head banging against the steering wheel and the airbag deployed.
I saw my life swirl around me. Birthday parties, swimming at the lake, meeting Brian, my parents doting on Luna, taking her places while I'm in the background. Brian staring at Luna even though he was with me. I had suspected he was cheating on me for a long time. I just refused to see the signs. My parents always believed everything Luna said. It was like she could make angels come out of her ass or something. She could never do wrong in their eyes. It would be better if I disappeared from his life, hell everyone's life all together. Looking back, he never loved me. No one ever did.
When I came back to consciousness, my car was upside down and the rain and wind had stopped. I managed to get my seat belt undone and slowly crawled out of the window. I started to feel woozy, so I sat down on the ground and put my head in my hands, trying to get my world to stop swirling and get myself grounded. When my hands pulled away, there was blood on my hands.
I picked my side mirror off of the ground to look at myself. There was a huge gash in the side of my head and bruising on my face and chest. My glasses fell off somewhere in the crash. Probably for the best. I wouldn't be able to wear them comfortably for a while anyway. I ripped the bottom of my shirt off and wrapped it around the cut to try and stop the bleeding, or at least control it.
Once my head stopped spinning and throbbing. I picked up my duffle bag out of the back and started searching for my phone and purse. I was going to need help once I found my way back to the main road. I also managed to find my glasses. I put them in my purse. My phone showed a dead battery and a huge crack on the screen. Great, just great. I attached it to the charger in my purse and followed the way my car had crashed through the trees.
I came to the cliff my car rolled off of. How I survived a fall like that I'll never know. I wouldn't be able to climb it with both my purse and duffle bag in my hands. I stuffed my purse into the duffle bag and let out the strap so it became a cross-body bag, then tightened it so it fit tightly across my back. I slowly started to climb the cliff side.
An hour later, I reached the top. However, it wasn't the road that was there but a town. An overgrown town that looked like no one had been there in a century.
