Chapter sixteen - Testament

2795 Words
Luke's POV: Two weeks have passed since the funeral. Sam is still here. He said he needed a break. Sarah still doesn't go to work, so this will be fine. After a couple of months, Kylie will be one year old. The plan was for them to get married shortly after her birthday. I don't know if they will do it now. My parents will be happy for sure. Me too, of course. He is my brother. Mom said that since our grandparents passed away, we should go and see their testament. I didn't even know they had one. I mean, they weren't full of money. The house is theirs, but that's it. I have no idea what they have as a legacy. Maybe their parents have left them something. I am the youngest, so probably I'll get less. It's not like I need something. Hopefully, I will be able to stay in their house. If it belongs to Sam, he will let me use it. I'm afraid that my parents will sell it. I will never let them do that. Well, if they have it, I can't do anything. I have talked with Abby about that. She told me that I deserved to have everything. As much as I appreciate it, I don't think I will have much. Even if they give me everything, it won't matter. I can't bring them back. I have to say that my girlfriend spends a lot of time with me. It's not like she doesn't get in trouble for that. Sometimes I feel bad for her, but I don't want to be alone. Also, we don't do anything. I mean, not what her dad is thinking about all the time. I let her sleep at home because I need to be around her. That's it. We haven't done anything besides sleeping and cuddling. I don't think that's a crime. As I see, Abby doesn't care about that. I wanted to take her with me when we should read the testament, but she said that was personal and won't come. I had luck with a girlfriend like her. I hope that we'll have a happy and healthy relationship. I'm not ready to let her go. Today we should see the man who will read us my grandparent's testament. A week ago, I had no idea they had one. Honestly, I don't know why I will go. Mom and dad will take most of the things. Next is Sam. Also, I don't want anything from them. I would love it if they could come, but we all know it's impossible. I feel like getting something from them will make me feel worse. I tried to pay more attention to Abby, but it was not working. All of this is like a fresh wound. I woke up and went to get ready for the day. The testament will be in the afternoon, so I have enough free time for Abby. I wanted to take Sam, Sarah, and Kylie to the lake. I believe the baby will enjoy it. Abby and I go there often, but I don't think they have been here. Maybe Sam had come when he was still in town. When I was ready, I went to eat something. I told my girlfriend to come here without knocking. The door is always open for her. - Hello. Can I join you for breakfast? - Yes, sure. - I said, and she started eating my cereal - That is good. - But, it's mine. - I said and took it back - Ok, ok. - If you want, I will make you a bowl. - No, thanks. I already had mine. - Then why did you eat mine? - Because I was sure it would annoy you. - Abby said, chuckling - Keep acting like that, and you won't see me anymore. - You can't even stay away from me for five minutes. - Are you sure? - Yes. If you don't want me here, I will go home. - she said and got up - No, no. You can stay here. - I said and grabbed her hand - See? - Ok, ok. Sam and Sarah will be here soon with the baby. - Great. What will we do? - I was thinking about taking them to the lake. Will you mind? - No, why would I? - Because this is our place. - But it doesn't belong to us. I mean, we don't own it. - True. Sam came with Sarah and Kylie. I took my things, and we walked to the lake. The plan is simple. After the lake, Sam and I will meet our parents for the testament. Abby and Sarah can go to my house. Soon, we arrived. My girlfriend and I left them to go and see our place. It's not like we didn't come a couple of days ago. Well, it always feels good when I am here with her. I mean, she was supposed to be part of my game. No feelings. Things quickly changed. It's not like I mind. Now I am happy that she is with me. That is the reason why I want to keep her. No one else will treat me like her. - Hey, I found the lovebirds. - Sam said, chuckling - Won't you take care of the baby? - I do it all the time at home. I want to spend some time with you. After five days, we are leaving. - Can't you stay longer? - I'm sorry, but no. This break is too long, and I should go back to work. - This place is so pretty. Kylie liked the leaves. - Sarah said - So, what is the plan for today? - Abby asked - Sam and I have to go for the testament. You, Sarah, and Kylie can go home if you want. - I do, for sure. - Sarah said, chuckling - I don't mind, but you should give me a key. - Here. Take mine. I have to give you a pair. - Why? - You come home often. - If you say so. - How did you two find this place? - Sarah asked - I used to come here when I was little. - Abby said - It looks like it means a lot to you. - Now, yes. Before, I didn't care that much. - Why? Did something happen? - Everything started here. Well, not exactly, but it became official here. - I don't understand. - He asked you out here. Right? - Sam asked - Yes. - I never expect you to find a girlfriend. You weren't the type of a guy. - Well, people change. - I'm glad that you found who you want to be. - It's not thanks to my mom and dad, for sure. - Look, I'm sorry about that. I don't know what they are doing it. - Sam, the fault is not yours. They make decisions, me too. - I don't know if I have told you, but I was jealous that you could go against them. I will never do it. - Because you care too much about what they think. You are older, and you should know this. I should learn from you, not the opposite. - I know, but I have nothing to teach you. Luke, you have everything, and you live better than me. - I won't be so sure, but ok. All of us talked for a while. Later, Sam and I went to meet our parents. As usual, I keep the conversations with them formal. The thing is that I have nothing to tell them. We walked inside, and a man came. He was holding some papers. Hopefully, this won't take much time. I don't want to be in the same room as my parents. - Hello, I am Andrew Robinson. Your parents have made a testament. It's a letter that your mother wrote. This is her handwriting. Right? - Yes, it is. - mom said - Here is what we'll do. I will read you the letter. It contains all the information and your parent's legacy. - Ok, you can read it. - Dear daughter. We raised you with love and care. Your dad and I wanted you to have a peaceful life full of love and beautiful moments. Also, to have a good and healthy family. We were so happy when Sam was born. He looked just like you as a baby. You made our lives even better with Luke. The love, which you had for both of them, was infinite until they grew up. Then you started treating them differently. Luke was the one who was against you. That's why you changed your attitude towards him. We wanted you to love both of them, not only one. They were little kids and didn't pay much attention to that, but we did. You are lucky that your sons didn't grow up hating each other. Jealousy can be a dangerous thing. Luckily, Luke doesn't care about this. Thanks to you, he grew up way sooner than he should. Dear, you can't treat your kids differently. I don't know when we went wrong with you. That's why we decided on our legacy. Your dad and I don't have many things, but we know who and what they deserve. You, my dear, will receive my whole book collection. Hopefully, reading will make you more educated about your family. For Sam, I had saved a box with memories from when he was little. When he went to university, I kept checking it. That was because he didn't come home often. Finally, Luke left. To my grandson, I give our house and all the savings in our bank account. He has proved to me many times he can take care of himself without your help. I will do it since you don't want to give him anything. I leave everything to Luke because he will take care of it. You probably will sell my house or give it up for rent. Luke, if you ever read this, you should know that we love you. We'll always be by your side. Do what you feel is right for you. Don't listen to what people tell you. I know you will be successful. Your grandpa and I believe in you. - Was that the end? - Sam asked - Yes. That is the letter. Here. You can read it if you want. - I'll take it. There is no way my mom wrote this. - mom said - Why? Because someone is finally on my side. - I said - You don't even know how to take care of yourself. Let's not talk about the house and their money. I am your legal guardian, and this belongs to me. - Miss Adams, I'm sorry to disappoint you. That is not true. - Andrew said - What? - You won't be able to get their money. - Why not? They are in my parent's bank account. - Yes, but they have a security password. Your mom said it's something only Luke knows. If you go to the bank account, the workers will ask you for the password before transferring the money. - This is a joke. Right? - I'm sorry, miss. - Ok, let's go home. We'll talk there. - dad said - Have fun. - I said - Won't you come with us? - Why should I? Also, Abby is at home. I promised to go back. - Ok, then. - I'll come with you to pick up Sarah and Kylie. - You left the baby with this girl? - Mom, please stop. Abby is a good girl. She won't do anything to the baby. Let's go, Luke. Dad, I'll come home later. - It's ok. Take your time. Bye, Luke. - Bye, dad. Both Sam and I walked to the bank first. Later, we'll go home. I can't believe that I have everything. Also, what is that thing only I know? I don't understand. We walked in, and I saw a cashier. The others were busy. - Hello. - Hi. How can I help you? - My grandparents have a bank account here. They passed away, and I am supposed to take care of that. - What is your name? - Luke Adams. - Oh, year. They came two years ago. Your grandmother wanted extra security for her money. Can I see your ID card? - Yes, sure. Here you go. - Ok, thanks. You can take it. - Can I know how much money we are talking about? - Yes, once you tell me the password. - I don't know it. - Your grandmother said it's something only you know. She said it was something between you and them. - What? Let me think for a moment. Something between them and me. As if that is easy. I have told my grandparents a lot of things. Let me think. Once, I skipped school because I got bored and went to see them. That day my granny told me something. It was that true love doesn't grow on trees but in your heart. I need to think. Can it be this? No, it sounds ridiculous. Hold on. She also said true love lasts forever only if you feel it with your heart. My grandparents have never talked with Sam about this. - Try true love doesn't go on trees, but in your heart. - Yes, that's it. Do you have a bank account? - No, I don't. - Let's make you one. Since your grandparents have passed away, I have to close the account. - How much money do they have? - Let me check. Your grandparents have fifty thousand dollars. - What? From where? - For the past couple of years, every month, your grandpa was coming to put money in the account. - That's a lot of money. I finished my work in the bank, and then Sam and I walked home. I don't know if I have to tell them about that. He might get offended. Abby and Sarah were talking in the kitchen. Kylie was sleeping in my girlfriend's arms. One day, she will be a good mom. - Hello, girls. Did you miss us? - I asked - Not at all. - Abby said - You are lucky I'm not offended. - How was the testament? - Your boyfriend is rich. - Sam said, chuckling - What? - Hold on. I didn't tell you how much money they left me. - You don't have to do it. I know everything. - I don't get it. - Do you think I will let my mom care about everything after how she treated you? - Sam, I don't know what you are talking about. - I may or may not have helped my granny with the testament two years ago. - You what? - She wanted to talk about it with someone. Our parents weren't an option. Both of us agreed that you have to get everything. - Why? - Because you will take care of it. Mom will sell the house or somehow make a profit out of it. We knew that you wouldn't do it. - So you told granny to give me everything. - No. I only told her my opinion. The final decision was hers. I wasn't there when she wrote it. - How she has so much money? - The last three years before they retired, my grandpa had put his salary in the bank account. He continued doing the same with his pension. They wanted you to start from somewhere and to help you. - I don't know what to say. - Nothing. Enjoy your life. You have a girlfriend to take care of now. - Thank you, Sam. - I didn't do anything. - You did more than you think. The rest of the day I spend with Abby. Sam and Sarah stayed at home until dinnertime. Later, they walked to my parent's house. From now on, that's what I will call it. That is not my home anymore. I have a new one. Mom can't do anything to take it away from me. I still can't believe that all of this is for me. I will do everything possible to take care of it. I owe it to my grandparents. They need to see that I didn't disappoint them. I don't know how to care about all this, but I will do it. I want them to be proud of me. I hope that I will be able to do that because my grandparents deserve it.
