Chapter One : The Invasion
The rain hammered against Maya Carter's apartment window as she stared at the email on her laptop screen. The subject line read: BLACKWATER SWAMP REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT - FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEY She had read it three times already. The state planned to drain large sections of Blackwater Swamp within the next year. The wetlands would be cleared to make way for roads, warehouses, and housing developments. For most people it was just another environmental report. For Maya, it was an opportunity. She was twenty-six years old and six months away from finishing her master's degree in environmental science. A field survey at Blackwater would look impressive on her thesis. Normally she would have been excited. Instead she felt empty. Her eyes drifted to the framed photograph sitting beside her laptop. Her father smiled back at her from the picture. The image had been taken during a camping trip years ago. Before the cancer. Before hospitals. Before funeral homes and sympathy cards. Three months had passed since his death. Some mornings she still reached for her phone, forgetting he was gone. Thunder rolled outside. Maya rubbed her eyes. The apartment suddenly felt too small. Too quiet. Her phone buzzed. A group message. The Chaos Crew. An ancient name from university days that nobody had ever bothered changing. TRENT: Weekend adventure. Who's in? ZOE: Depends. Are we trespassing? TRENT: Almost certainly. LILA: That's not reassuring. ETHAN: What have you found this time? TRENT: An abandoned military bunker. Or a haunted swamp. Still deciding. JACE: Haunted swamp. TRENT: See? Jace gets it. Maya sighed. The sight of Jace's name still stirred complicated feelings. Three years together. One painful breakup. Two years pretending they were just friends. Neither of them had quite mastered the pretending part. Her phone rang seconds later. Trent. She answered. "What now?" "You sound thrilled to hear from me." "What do you want?" "I have a proposal." "Dangerous words." Trent laughed. "Road trip." "No." "You haven't heard the details." "I don't need details." "You definitely need details." Maya rolled her eyes. Some things never changed. Trent Walker was incapable of being discouraged. He had the energy of a Labrador retriever that had accidentally consumed an entire crate of energy drinks. "Blackwater Swamp." The name caught her attention. "That's actually a real place." "I know." "Why Blackwater?" "Because apparently it's cursed." "Of course." "And because Zoe nearly exploded when she heard about it." In the background Maya heard Zoe shouting. "It's not exploding if it's justified enthusiasm!" Maya smiled despite herself. Zoe Martinez hosted a small paranormal podcast called Beyond the Veil. Most of her audience listened ironically. Zoe insisted that didn't matter. Downloads were downloads. "The place has everything," Trent continued. "Disappearances. Ghost stories. Creepy locals. Unexplained lights." "Sounds awful." "Perfect." The call disconnected briefly as someone yelled. Maya could hear Ethan trying to restore order. Then Lila. Then more arguing. Then Trent returned. "Anyway. Friday morning. We're going." "We?" "Yes." "I haven't agreed." "You will." "Why?" "Because you've barely left your apartment in months." The words landed harder than intended. Silence followed. Trent's voice softened. "You need this, Maya." She looked again at her father's photograph. Maybe he was right. Everything in her life had become routines and grief. University. Sleep. Work. Repeat. Nothing else. No adventures. No distractions. No living. "When do we leave?" she asked. A cheer erupted through the phone. Trent whooped triumphantly. "I knew it." "You are unbelievably annoying." "Yet somehow effective." The call ended. Maya stared at the rain outside. For the first time in months she felt something besides sadness. A nervous excitement. A feeling she hadn't experienced in a long time. She didn't know it yet. But agreeing to that trip would be the worst decision of her life. --- The next morning the six friends met in the parking lot behind Trent's apartment. The old SUV looked barely roadworthy. Duct tape held part of the rear bumper together. "That thing is a death trap," Maya said. Trent patted the hood affectionately. "Her name is Bertha." "Bertha belongs in a scrapyard." "Bertha has character." "Bertha has tetanus." Jace laughed. The sound caught Maya off guard. She hadn't heard it in weeks. He looked exactly as she remembered. Dark hair. Easy smile. The same eyes that once made promises they couldn't keep. Their gazes met briefly. Then both looked away. Neither mentioned it. Neither ever did. Ethan arrived carrying enough supplies for an expedition across Antarctica. "How long are we staying?" Zoe asked. "Three days." "Then why do you have twelve bags?" Ethan shrugged. "I like being prepared." Lila emerged from her car carrying a first aid kit. "And this is why Ethan survives horror movies." The group loaded supplies. Laughter echoed through the parking lot. For a little while everything felt normal. Like university. Like old times. Like they were still young enough to believe bad things happened to other people. Nobody noticed the black crow perched atop a nearby telephone pole. Watching. Waiting. Its head tilted as the SUV pulled away. Then it spread its wings and vanished into the gray morning sky. Heading south. Toward Blackwater Swamp.
