CHAPTER ONE: SNOW LEE
Chapter One: Snow Lee
The sun is already up. Its rays are passing through the glass window in the kitchen. The aroma of coffee filled the room as Snow walked down the stairs. Yawning, she saw her grandmother preparing their breakfast.
Eggs, bread, and coffee. Simple but she loves it. Every moment with his grandmother – she loves it.
She smiled at the old woman as she sat down on the dining chair. "Sit, Jjang. I already prepared your breakfast." She said to the young woman.
"I'm sorry, grandma. I stayed up all night solving that mathematical equation given to us." She sat down, facing her grandmother who is now sipping on her coffee.
"It's alright. Besides, it's Saturday. Take a rest. You have been studying hard. You deserve a rest." The old woman gave her an assuring smile.
"I'm a graduating student. I need to work harder to pass this semester. Few more months, grandma. I promise to take all the rest I need after this hell." They both chuckled at her last sentence.
It's true. Only a few more months before she graduate. She only needs to pass the last assessment and it's all done.
Graduating is one of some people's dreams. But reaching this goal is hard. A person must go through a lot of struggles, failures, and disappointments before succeeding. In the end, it will be worth it. All the hardships, all the blood and sweat you exerted. It will all be worth it.
Snow smiled at the thought of her grandmother with her on stage with a diploma in her hand. Few more months and she can pay back her grandmother's sacrifices.
"Jjang, you know I love you, right? You were only a little girl before and now you are already a graduating student. Time flies fast. Look at you, a pretty young woman. You will have pretty children in the future."
"Grandma!" She shouted. Her grandma laughed at her. "I was joking, you know." She shook her head. Sometimes, her grandma is telling her about how good-looking her children will be. She erased that thought. She's too young for this kind of conversation.
"You really look like your father."
Snow halt from eating. One word that she hates the most to hear – father.
"Damn it." She said to herself. She lost her appetite.
"I'm sorry. Since the day I saw you, Jjang, that's the first thing I said. Look at those features, especially those eyes of yours. You two are the sa--
Bang.
A gunshot.
Blood. Scattered around the kitchen. On her face.
Blood. Of her grandmother.
She's...
The sound of alarm woke her up.
"Fuck." She grabbed one of her pillows and threw it at the desk – where the alarm clock is. It did not faze the alarm, though. It continued to ring enough for her to stand up turn it off.
"God damn it." She went to the bathroom to wash her face.
Another dream. A nightmare. The past is still hunting her down. It has been four years, a lot of things has happened yet she cannot forget that day.
She went down to the kitchen after brushing her teeth. A smile greeted her. Snow greeted back using her eyeroll.
"Good morning, Jjang." A man said while pouring milk on a glass.
"Don't call me that." She sat on the barstool as she stared at the breakfast in front of her. Disgusting.
"Why not? It's your nickname." The man gave her the glass of milk. He only received a death glare.
"What's this? Poison? Where's Luke?" She asked before sipping on her milk.
French toast. Burnt. This man doesn't know how to cook yet he still did. Snow was glad he did not burn the whole kitchen.
"He went out to buy groceries. I used all eggs from the fridge trying to make you breakfast yet you still not like it." He pouted. Snow glared at his face. Disgusting.
"Who would like this poison? For the last time, stay away from the kitchen. Cooking is not in your blood."
"Hey! I am trying here!" He pouted once again.
"You're disgusting, Adam." A voice from behind. Turning their faces back, they saw a man carrying a paper bag with a frowned face.
"You guys are bullying me again." Adam stomped his feet, making the two raise their eyebrows.
"Stop acting like a child, Adam," Luke said. Placing the grocery to the kitchen island.
Out of the three, Adam is the only person who can't cook. Ask him to fry an egg and he will burn the kitchen down. That's how bad he is.
A sigh out of relief escaped from Snow's mouth. Luke's arrival gave her relief. Like there was a savior who came. Luke is a good cook. She knows he will serve good food.
"Daniel called me earlier. He will come back tonight." Luke said while opening the range.
Daniel. The fourth guy. The three did not saw him for quite a long time now. They are not expressive about it, but they miss that man. The news that came from Luke is a good kind of news. They will see Daniel again.
Adam stood up to prepare his morning coffee. The aroma made her remember the past.
Coffee. Her grandma used to made her that.
She remembers the kitchen full of her blood.
Coffee. She clenched her fist, trying to erase the memory. This is not the right time to think of the past.
Coffee. Her grandmother's smile. Her pure smile.
Coffee.
"Snow." She turned back to reality when Luke called him. Looking up, a worried face from the two met her eyes.
"I'm sorry." She stated. Her face went blank, the memory from the past fades away.
Without question, Luke placed the cooked breakfast on the table. It's better this time. Unlike what Adam did earlier.
She shook her head lightly. The past almost took her. She thought everything is fine now but maybe she's wrong.
It's been four years. She have to move on.
