The Unexpected
Tears rolling down Ronna's cheeks have been a routine experience. The happenings of the previous days have really turned her to a sour 'b***h' as some would say.
It all started when she was invited to identify the corpse of her only surviving relative Lisa. Lisa, though eight years older than her, had resumed motherly roles after the death of their parents in a fatal motor accident ten years ago. Lisa, who had just finished from Secondary school had to forfeit her dreams of seeking higher education to help her little sister who was in Primary five, after all attempts to get help from family members proved abortive. She had engaged in many menial jobs to raise money to support Ronna and herself.
"What were their intentions" Ronna kept asking herself, "she never looked for trouble with anyone". She was still muttering to herself when she was showed the headless corpse of her sister, who obviously was a victim of ritual. Ronna could hardly identity her due to the mutilations on her body, with her vital organs missing, and her skin slightly changed in colour.
As though that wasn't enough, Roland, her lover and closest friend (after Lisa) abandoned her for a more classic girl from a very wealthy family, because she had been a sorrowful lady.
Ronnas final days in the Niger Delta University became even more frustrating because Roland didn't really try to hide his newly found feelings for Timi, who on the other hand, was enjoying the pain it caused her. Roland had promised her forever, just like her sister did but she still ended up with none but herself.
Lisa had once told her to pen down her worries and fears on a small diary which she without hesitation brought out from her pile of books. It was a small diary with a purple cover and she drew a heart on it with the inscription "My true friend" boldly written in italic.
"Dear diary, ......" she started and words after words kept pouring that she lost track of time. Looking up after five hours of communicating with her diary, she realized it was already deep into the night. Out of exhaustion, she slept off with her diary on a textbook she had intended to research with for an assignment due the next day.
Her alarm clock went off an hour later but was snoozed with the intentions of resting for another half an hour. A phone call from Angela, her course mate to jolted her out of sleep.
"Hello, Angi" she spoke slowly into the receiver of her phone.
"Babe, where are you. Mr. Musa is about to give us a test now".
"Seriously! I'm on my way," she said, hurriedly trying to freshen up. Flinging the phone to one end of the room.
She arrived class forty-five minutes later and was told she had missed the test. Frustration set in again but this time, she decided against playing the weak one. She instead went to the lecturer's office to explain her case to him. "But what exactly am I going to tell him and what if he doesn't see reasons with me" she pondered. She prayed that there would be a good Samaritan to help plead her case. Luckily, saw the lecturer about to drive out as she approached his office. She ran with all her might to intercept him.
Mr. Musa on the other hand had been attracted to the scene created by a very beautiful girl running towards him.
"Wow" he muttered inaudibly with his eyes fixed on her dangling breasts. "If only I can have her all to myself".
It seemed as though his silent wish was granted when she stopped just beside his car trying to catch her breath.
"Good morning Sir," she said in between breaths, "I... I'm sorry I..... "
"You missed my test too" he cut in, "So what do you want me to do for you?" he asked looking as serious as possible.
"Isn't there any way to make up for the test, maybe another test," she pleaded
"What's your name" he asked. "Write it down here, and your matriculation Number"
She hurriedly collected the small booklet he gave her and wrote down her details.
"You may need to put down your phone number too," he added
"Okay sir, here they are" she said handing back the book to him.
"I'll get back to you" he said before driving off.
Things had finally started getting better for her she thought when she saw a short message on her phone whilst in another class. Mr. Musa had decided to give her and a few others a rerun test in his office during the lunch break hour.
The test went smoothly as the questions asked were very familiar to her. From the smiles emanating from the face of the other two students writing alongside her in his office, she could tell they were having a good time also. She even had to submit her answer sheet thirty minutes before the stipulated time.
That evening, she decided not to allow anything negative cross her thoughts, and she made conscious efforts to actualize her decision. Just when she thought she was progressing, she got a call that pulled her off balance.
"Hello, good evening" she said cheerfully after answering the call.
"Am I on to Miss Ronna Nengi?" came the voice from the other end, disregarding her greetings.
"Yes you are, I'm Miss Ronna" she said still smiling "who wants to know"
"That is quite irrelevant right now ...
"It sure is Sir. So if you don't want me dropping this call, please do the needful " she cut in.
"I'm Musa, your Meiosis lecturer"
"Oh sir good Evening, I'm so sorry for my response, I was unaware it was you."
"It's alright. Let me just go straight to the point, you know you're a very pretty and well built lady. So without mixing words, I'll make you a proposal; I can make you pass my course without stress, even without sitting for it. All you have to do is avail me yourself whenever and wherever I want you. If you refuse, I'll make sure you never graduate, but if you accept my proposal, I'm waiting in room 306 of the Hotel De Matich. The choice is yours, think of your future and make the right decision." With that he dropped the call not giving room for any response.
