Chapter 1: Las Vegas
Las Vegas
As Evangeline prepared to pack her things, tears started to stream down her face. She was kneeling on the floor with her head held down while staring at the pictures where she and her ex-lover were all smiling while looking at the camera with a Mickey Mouse headband on their heads.
Her tears fell on the photographic paper as her heart broke into a million pieces. A few minutes passed, and her tears ruined the photo, like how she thought the man in the photo was the man of her dreams.
Evangeline wiped the tears from her face, stood up, and prepared to throw away all the things that reminded her of the man she'd been with for the last three years. She took a garbage bag, and it did not take long before it was filled with his things.
Three weeks have passed since she caught Alan, her ex-boyfriend, cheating on her with one of his supposed colleagues. It was their anniversary then, and Evangeline decided to leave work early to surprise him, but he was the one who surprised her when she found him in their bed with another woman.
She took everything she could, and when she was done packing, she left the apartment she would sell that week. She left in the hope of forgetting everything—every sweet and bitter memory that the place witnessed.
Thanks to her position as the assistant to the president of H&M, she was able to buy that property. She lives in California, and she and her ex-partner were actually planning to buy a better house, but everything was ruined when he broke her trust and their relationship by having an affair with another woman.
Evangeline used her savings to pay for the deposit on her new apartment, and thanks to Marie, a real estate agent, she would be able to get an extension to pay for the remaining balance once the apartment is sold.
"This is the last box," a man from the moving company informed her.
"Thank you," Evangeline replied, and she handed him the payment.
She liked the hallway of the building. It was not spacious, but it was clean. The whole building is painted silver gray, like the elevator, giving the place a futuristic and modern look. She reached her apartment and closed the door. Once inside, she let her back slide through the door and took a stick from her bag. The truth is, she has no bad habits. However, she smokes when she's upset, nervous, or worried over something, and this time, she's feeling altogether.
She didn't feel like unpacking, so she remained on the floor for, God knows, how long until she heard a knock on the door that snapped her out of her thoughts.
"I know you're on the floor because I can see your silhouette through the small crack," she heard a woman's voice say, and it was Anna, her friend. She promised to help her unpack, get her life back on track, and move on.
"I told you that you didn't need to come; I'm fine," Evangeline told her friend. She swallowed a sob that was threatening to escape her throat and opened the door. She wiped her face and made an escape to the living room.
"This can't go on, Evie," Anna said, using her nickname, which only the closest people to her can use.
"While you're here wallowing in self-pity and being miserable, that bastard is probably f*****g that woman!" Anna burst out in anger and worry. She is worried, and she will not leave her friend until she's better.
"I know, and you're right, but it's better said than done, Anna." Evangeline sat on the chair and put her hair in a bun.
"You know what? We should go out this weekend," the brown-eyed blonde declared.
"What are you saying?" Evie asked in confusion.
"We will go on a vacation. So go get one of your luggage, pack the sexiest clothes you have, and we'll go to Vegas!" Anna exclaimed with a smile.
"You're crazy," Evie deadpanned, against the idea of leaving or having fun at that.
"No, ma'am, I readily bought us tickets, and our flight is in two hours," Anna declared with a grin before she went to the luggage to help her friend pack. "Stop crying because it's time for you to have fun and make up for the time you wasted by being loyal to that cheating jerk," she added as she observed what to take.
"You know what? You're right. I need to stop thinking about that i***t who only thinks with his d**k," she said with determination, and helped Anna pack her bag.
An hour later, they are on the plane which will take them to Sin City.
She spent her time with Anna in a casino in Las Vegas. They lost some games but won most of them. After that, they agreed to spend their time at the club. They went back to the hotel, and Evie wore a tight black leather dress and paired it with black heels. She brushed her long, dark-brown hair and let it down before applying mascara to her already long lashes. After that, she stared at her reflection and convinced herself that she was ready to spend a night with a stranger because there was no use wasting her tears over someone who didn't deserve it.
They reached the most popular nightclub in Las Vegas because it wasn't hard for Anna to access any clubs. All she needs is a smile from the bouncer and security to give them access, and once inside, they go to a table and order.
"Pick whoever you like; just make sure they are not a psychopath," Anna told her, and she stood up to dance with a handsome stranger.
Evie tried her best to convince herself earlier, but she was still nervous. She took her bag and went to the bar. She wasn't comfortable being alone at a table while watching her friend kiss a stranger. She ordered her drink and sighed as she played with the glass. Her eyes went back to her friend, who was dancing to the beat of the music.
"Do you want to dance?" A man beside her asked, snapping her out of her thoughts.
Her eyes left Anna, and she turned to the man who was talking to her, who had just taken a sip of his drink.
She surveyed the man with a raised brow and noticed his disheveled appearance. How did he get in here? The man is a mess. His suit is wrinkled, and it looks big on him. She was not one to judge someone based on their appearance, but the man in front of her was too much.
"No." Evie rejected him and ignored the man.
"Come on, let's dance!" The man pestered her and did not leave her side.
She saw how he tried to seduce her with his eyes, his eyes focusing on her cleavage and going back to her eyes.
'Geez. What a maniac,' Evie thought.
"I said no!" She repeated loudly, and he grasped her arm tight.
She was about to shout at him when a baritone voice from behind her stopped her.
"Did you not hear what the lady said? She refused, right?" A man asked calmly, and she could feel his presence behind her.
