Max's Son
When Evie left the apartment, she let out a long sigh. Even though the man gave her an unforgettable night, she would never see him again, and it left an empty feeling inside her somehow.
She came back to the hotel, and she was surprised to see her friend, whom she thought would spend a night with a stranger somewhere like she did, but she was there in her pajamas.
"Don't ask, it was horrible," the blonde said with a hint of annoyance in her voice as she asked for breakfast on the phone. After the call, her eyes narrowed at her friend, and she asked for every detail about her night with a stranger she didn't see.
Evangeline continued unpacking as soon as their vacation in Las Vegas was over. Using a pair of scissors, she cut the adhesive tape on the box where her decorations were. It was her mother's picture, her little brother's, and her eyes softened as she saw her late father's picture, who died a few years ago.
She wiped the sweat on her forehead using her hand and took out her things to decorate her small apartment. Once done, she served herself cold water.
She kneeled on one of the three benches in front of the black-marbled table and let out a deep sigh before closing the bottle.
"Are you thinking about that guy again?" Anna, who helped decorate and finish her apartment, asked. "Hmp! I wish Steve was half as good as Ben, but no, I just pretended to orgasm, so we could finish and go back to the hotel." She whined and took an apple before sitting beside her.
Evie let out a small laugh when she heard what her friend said. She just found it ironic that Las Vegas was her idea, but she was the one who enjoyed it, not her.
"The night with that man was amazing, but I wasn't thinking about her," Evie responded and sighed at the changes in her life, but of course, they were for the better. "Max will leave the company in two months, and it's making me sad," Evie explained, staring at nothing in particular.
Maximiliano Harris, or Max, as she called him, is the president of H & M, a company that focuses on fashion, and she appreciates her boss so much. She met him six years ago when she was twenty-one, and there is no doubt that she will miss him so much. She can still remember the day she met him.
When her father died, Evie was left to take care of her mother and thirteen-year-old little brother. She needed to leave university to find a job to pay for their daily expenses because her mother was sick, and she couldn't work anymore. She remembered crying beside the table in hopelessness.
"Why are you crying?" A man asked her and handed her a handkerchief.
"My dad died a few days ago, and he left a sea of debt behind that I don't have any idea how I will pay. My mother needs medical attention that I couldn't afford, and my little brother needs help for his school." She found herself pouring her heart out while crying and hiccuping.
The older man surveyed the young woman who was troubled by life's burden in front of him, while his twenty-six-year-old son had just finished his master's degree and was currently running their business in France. The man smiled softly and asked what she studied, and Evie answered that before her father died, she studied international finance, but she had to leave the university.
"Go to this address tomorrow morning; I think I might have something for you."
And it turned out to be the best opportunity for Evie. There is a silver lining in the middle of hopelessness. She replaced his pregnant secretary, and her salary was able to cover her expenses, including her mother's medicines and her brother's needs. That man gave her the chance to start again. He was a good man, and she would never forget what he did to her.
"But you said his son would replace him as president. If his father is still a handsome man in his old age, just think about how his son looks." Anna blurted with a teasing grin on her face and bit a chunk of the apple.
"I don't know much, actually. Max rarely shares things about his family, and he doesn't have any family pictures in his office. And I don't care even if his son is handsome." She replied with a roll of her eyes because that thought never crossed her mind.
"Oh, really?" Anna asked, shrugging.
They continued their task, threw away the now-empty boxes, and swept the dust from the floor.
Days pass, and Evie goes back to work. It's been two months since Las Vegas, and she's now settling her balance. She was in the design department when she received a call from her boss asking her to come to his office. Everyone knows that it was the day that he would introduce his son as the new CEO of the company. Evie is confident with her work, so she's not nervous; however, she's still sad because Max is the closest thing she has to a father, and he's leaving.
Evie walked down the hallway while carrying some documents for her boss. She entered his office without knocking, and she was the only one who could do it. Without looking at him, she began to explain the documents and the mistakes she saw in the designs.
"Excellent, Evie, but I called you here because I want to introduce you to my son," Max said, bringing Evie's attention to the files she was holding, and she failed to notice another presence in the room.
At the other side of the desk was a towering man with caramel skin. He doesn't look older than 35, and you cannot see any flaws in his gorgeous face.
"This is Benjamin Harris, my son, and your new boss," Max introduced him with a smile on his face.
Benjamin stood up from where he was and fixed his expensive suit before walking to where Evie, who remained still as a statue, was.
"I am glad to finally meet you, Miss Anderson; I heard a lot about you," Max's son told her, and Evie swallowed deeply as she looked back at the man whom she spent the night with in Las Vegas.
