The man he could never be . (chapter one)
The man he could never be. Chapter 1 – The night everything broke. The countryside outside Dallas was quiet at night. Too quiet sometimes. The wind carried the scent of dry grass and dust across the wide open fields, rustling through the trees that lined the long gravel driveway leading to the house. Kayla sat on the wooden porch steps, staring out into the darkness. Her phone screen glowed in her hand. She had already seen the message ten times. Still, she opened it again. A photo. Daniel. Not alone. A girl with long black hair sat on his lap in some crowded bar. His arm was wrapped around her waist like it belonged there. Like Kayla had never existed. Her chest felt tight. 20:14 – Unknown number: "Thought you should see what your boyfriend is doing tonight." Kayla laughed bitterly under her breath. Boyfriend. Not anymore. Her fingers trembled as she typed. Kayla: Don’t contact me again. She locked the phone and tossed it beside her. Inside the house, music was playing. Daniel had left it on earlier when he stormed out after their fight. They had been arguing more and more lately. About stupid things. About trust. About why he never answered his phone when he went out with his friends. Now she knew why. Gravel crunched in the distance. Headlights cut through the darkness as a black truck pulled slowly up the driveway. Kayla didn’t move. She already knew who it was. Daniel. Probably drunk. Probably ready to lie. The truck stopped. The engine turned off. But the door didn’t open right away. For a moment, everything was quiet again. Then the door opened. Heavy boots hit the gravel. Kayla frowned slightly. Daniel never wore boots like that. She turned her head. And froze. It wasn’t Daniel. It was his father. Alexander Carter. He stood beside the truck, tall and broad-shouldered, the porch light catching in his dark hair. Even from the distance, his presence filled the space around him. He was the kind of man people noticed without him saying a word. Six feet tall. Sharp jaw. Green eyes that seemed to see everything. Kayla had always found him intimidating. Not scary. Just… powerful. Alexander walked toward the porch slowly. Kayla stood up awkwardly. “Mr. Carter—” “Alexander,” he corrected calmly. His voice was deep, steady. Kayla swallowed. “Right… Alexander. I thought Daniel was coming home.” Alexander’s jaw tightened slightly. “He isn’t.” Kayla’s stomach sank. “So you know.” Alexander stepped onto the porch. Up close, his presence felt even heavier. Like the air shifted around him. “I know enough,” he said. Kayla crossed her arms. “Well that saves me the embarrassment of explaining.” Alexander studied her face quietly. “You’re handling it better than I expected.” Kayla let out a dry laugh. “Oh trust me. I’m not.” Her voice cracked slightly. She hated that it did. Alexander noticed. Of course he did. He noticed everything. His gaze shifted to the phone lying on the porch beside her. “You saw the picture.” It wasn’t a question. Kayla nodded slowly. “Yeah.” A long silence followed. Then Alexander spoke again. “Daniel won’t be coming back tonight.” Kayla shrugged, trying to act like she didn’t care. “That’s fine.” Another lie. Alexander stepped closer. Not too close. But enough that Kayla suddenly became aware of how tall he was. How much space he took up. “How long have you known him?” he asked. “Two years.” “And he treats you like this.” Kayla shrugged again. “I guess I ignored a lot of things.” Alexander’s expression darkened slightly. “He doesn’t deserve you.” The words came out flat. Certain. Kayla blinked in surprise. “That’s… nice of you to say about your son.” Alexander didn’t smile. “I’m not interested in defending him.” For a moment they just stood there. Wind rustled through the fields. Kayla suddenly felt exhausted. “So what now?” she asked quietly. Alexander’s green eyes rested on her. Intense. Focused. “You’re not staying here tonight.” Kayla frowned. “What?” Alexander gestured toward the house. “This is Daniel’s place. You shouldn’t have to sit here thinking about what he did.” “I’ll be fine.” “No,” Alexander said calmly. “You won’t.” The certainty in his voice made Kayla pause. He stepped closer again. Close enough now that she could see the faint stubble along his jaw. “You’re coming with me.” Kayla blinked. “To where?” “My house.” Kayla laughed nervously. “Your solution to your son cheating on me is kidnapping me?” Alexander’s mouth twitched slightly. “You can call it that if you want.” She studied his face. He wasn’t joking. “But why?” Alexander held her gaze. For a moment, something unreadable passed through his eyes. Something darker. “Because,” he said quietly, “someone should take care of you.” Kayla’s heart skipped. The way he said it felt… different. Not polite. Not casual. Intentional. She picked up her phone slowly. “You know this is weird, right?” Alexander nodded once. “Very.” Kayla hesitated. Then she looked back at the empty driveway. At the house that suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else. Daniel’s laughter echoed faintly in her memory. Daniel and that girl. She sighed. “Fine.” Alexander opened the truck door for her. Kayla climbed in. The truck started a moment later. As they drove down the dark countryside road, Kayla stared out the window. Alexander’s hands rested calmly on the steering wheel. Strong hands. Quiet hands. But something about the way his jaw tightened when Daniel’s name was mentioned made Kayla realize something. Alexander Carter wasn’t just disappointed in his son. He was angry. And for some reason… Kayla had a strange feeling that Daniel had just made the biggest mistake of his life.
