There’s nothing quite as nerve-wracking as being the new girl. I tugged my backpack strap higher on my shoulder and kept my head down, letting my hair fall like a curtain over my face. Crestwood University was massive compared to my old school, and the crowd of students rushing past made me feel even smaller. I’ve been told I’m pretty more times than I can count, but that doesn’t mean much when you’re awkward and terrible at meeting people. My chestnut hair, which I’d left loose in an attempt to look effortlessly casual, felt more like a mess now. My hazel eyes, framed by long lashes, weren’t doing me any favors either since they refused to meet anyone else’s. I’m just…me. Naturally beautiful, as my mom likes to say, but so shy I might as well be invisible. I walked across the quad, clutching my schedule like it was a lifeline. My first class was History 101, something I actually cared about, and I prayed the professor would be the type to let me hide in the back row unnoticed. With any luck, I’d survive the day without humiliating myself. But as I reached the lecture hall, the moment I stepped through the doors, my breath caught in my throat. The man standing at the front of the room—tall, broad-shouldered, with piercing gray eyes and an air of quiet authority—was not what I expected. I’d never believed in love at first sight. Until now.
