Chapter 5
Happy birthday! my mom shouts as she storms into my room with a purple iced cupcake and a lit candle in one hand and balloons in the other. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. My mom starts singing. Mom! I smile with embarrassment and pull a pillow over my head.
Happy birthday, baby, she says and kisses my face. Mom, stop! I shout. She puts the cupcake down on my bedside table, then sits down and tickles me. I kick and laugh until she stops. You're growing up so fast, she says while she cups my face. I can't believe how fast 15 years have gone, she says, staring at me. Her eyes filled with love. I wish your dad could have seen how wonderful you had become. I sit up and hug her. Me too, I say softly. She wipes the tears from her eyes as she gets up. This is supposed to be a happy day, she says. Let's go, Thomas is waiting for you.

My stepfather waited downstairs, not wanting to disturb us. When I came down, he gave me a little box inside, which was a necklace that my mother knew I wanted. My stepfather held her in his arm and then downed a glass of whiskey. It was the first time I'd ever seen him drinking, especially this early in the morning.
Off to school, my mom says suddenly. I finish my coffee and go back upstairs to get dressed. When I came back downstairs, I overheard part of a conversation between my mom and stepfather. ...." Does she know yet? Thomas asked my mother. No, not yet, she awnsered. Lucy, she's going to find out sooner or later he says sternly. You better tell her before she finds out by herself, he says as he puts his cup in the sink. Yes, I know Thomas she awnsered annoyed, she sighed then calmly said just not today, let her have today. He sighs. I wish there was something I could do to make you... I walked down the rest of the stairs. He stops talking as soon as he sees me. My mother doesn't see me. Just promise me you'll take care of her she asked him. I promise he whispers.
Right, off to school, we go she says as she turns to me while picking up her car keys. I squint my eyes at their sudden silence as I enter the kitchen. I get into the car with my mom and head to school. As usual, Jason is there before us, a different girl hanging onto him every day. Today, a beautiful brunette with the prettiest brown eyes and a gorgeous smile. Hi beautiful, he greets another red-haired girl. The brown haired girl clearly gets angry and jealous. Ihg, he has no respect for girls, I tell my mother. I know she awnseres.
Alright, baby, my mom says here's your lunch she hands it to me and then kisses me. Have a good day she shouts out the window as she drives away, and happy birthday! Mom! I shouted back. I walk past Jason. and his hoard of slutty girls when one of the brown haired girls friends push me down to the floor. She laughs and walks away. Okay, I say to myself, and clean myself up. Jason laughs and guides the girls to class.

After school, I'm supposed to go home with Jason, but he's nowhere to be seen, and his car is missing too. Assuming he had left, I started walking home.
When I reach home, it's quiet and empty. Where is everyone? I ask with no awnser. I go upstairs to my room, put on the sterio, and start on my homework. After my homework, I dance around in my room before taking a nap. When I wake up, I find my stepfather downstairs in the bar drunk as a skunk. I decided not to let him notice me, so I ran back to my room.

The next day, my mom called Jason and me downstairs. My moms face looks sad and worried. I everything okay I ask. She starts sobbing. Thomas tries to calm her down. She tries to talk through the sobbing we... have ....something ....really important to tell you kids.... She looks to Thomas. Your mother has stage 4 cancer, and the doctors say that there is nothing more they can do for your mom. I start crying uncontrollably. My mother holds me in her arms. How long do you have? Jason asks. They said a little over 4 months. Thomas answered. Jason says nothing further he sits for a while, his expression cold and distant. Then he gets up and goes to his room. My stepfather goes to his office and pours himself a drink.
My mother and I spend the night on the couch just holding each other and talking about everything. I don't want you to leave me. I tell my mother. You won't be alone she awnsers me. Thomas will take good care of you she drags her fingers through my hair as I lay in her lap. The adoption has finally been approved, and I'm so happy that you'll be well looked after.

7 months flew by so fast. My mother is still holding on fighting, but visibly getting weaker by the day. Thomas and I took care of her as best we could. I was afraid I didn't want her to leave me, I didn't want her to be in pain either, which she was. I lay next to her crying after school. Don't cry, baby, she says everything will be okay she try reassuring me.
3 days later, she started crying all day, saying she's in so much pain her skin is on fire. I couldn't touch her, or she would scream in pain. I couldn't help her, and it made me feel horrible. I loved her so much and hated seeing her in so much pain. That night, she passed peacefully in her sleep.
